Thanks @Yellowcastle and @Sidersdd. Got Shuttle Expedition and MMV.
  • jadeirenejadeirene Member Posts: 474
Thanks for the heads up on the deal. I was trying to get a Shuttle Expedition and Maersk Train. I got to checkout and when I confirmed the order, the train went out of stock and TRU charged me full price for the shuttle. I had to cancel that and put in another order for the Shuttle Expedition and MMV.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
^^^ I'm pretty sure that's not the power functions motor...I've been staring at that for months. And picture for the AAA battery box is the actual power functions motor. I've never ordered it because I'm not sure which I'll get.
Ah, yep, it's not the PF Train Motor. That's here:

^ At least the Shuttle Expedition didn't go out of stock as I was cancelling that order and putting in the new one.

Yeah, you can get lucky and find the Maersk on Amazon for $99.99 on occasion I believe.

Thanks for the heads up @Yellowcastle and @sidersdd

edit: forgive the repeated posts below, I should have edited just this one, my bad... :(

    -----------------------

Nothing to match with GE however... :)

    Or should it be :(

Besides, MMV and Expedition is probably the best "match" I can find...
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Ahh, it let me put a pair of Unimogs in my cart... A bit early to buy that in bulk however, I expect it to be around for another year at least.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Ahh, pair Unimog with Motorized Excavator, that isn't a bad deal now that Amazon is back to full price on the ME and doesn't carry UM at all.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Public Transport would be a good pair with either MMV or Shuttle... That set isn't long for this world either, since it is sold out at [email protected]

For those with little kids, the Duplo Big Zoo is TRU exclusive, so pair it with one of the $100 sets...

edit: TRU is $10 too high on that, so while it is a savings, it isn't as much of one... :(
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
sorry it's more of a playful shot...doesn't come out the way I want on the internet I suppose
    Playful shot taken... ;)

I only bought some MMV, Shuttle, and Public Transport, so you have nothing to fear from me.

Even if both FB and GE were in stock, I'm not buying GE right now so that wouldn't be a deal to me, WAY too far in advance to be buying GE.

If it would let me have a pair of FB, sure, that is easy, but it wouldn't have even if they were in stock, which they were not and are not.

@LegoFanTexas But what is the difference if you buy it now and buying it later? You're still going to purchase it.

Available funds must be prioritized to the sets most likely to EOL not even LegoFanTexas has unlimited funds lol. jmo

@thecleator That makes sense. Looking at LFT's stash, I thought he had unlimited cash or won the lottery. lol. just kidding.

The funny thing is, for all the big deal everyone makes of this, my "stash" is a mere drop of water in the ocean. It doesn't even rank as a drop in the bucket...

I have 23 FB stocked away right now and I've made space for a total of 40 of them. Big deal, that is probably 1 day of sales for Amazon on a bad day... in February... when the weather is nice and everyone is outside having fun...

Even if there are a thousand people like me, 40,000 such sets that will be slowly moved to the market over 2 or 3 years after the set EOLs, is nothing...

Does anyone here have any idea how many FB's Lego has made? If it is any less than 500,000, I'd be downright shocked, I'm guessing the number is over a million.
  • thecleatorthecleator Member Posts: 70
I have often how many lurkers are out there with stashes even bigger then yours.
  • LegobrandonCPLegobrandonCP Member Posts: 1,917
To me, 23 FB is like living a dream life, heck even 3 large MISB sets would make me drool and ask "how did you afford that". I'm not saying I can't afford large sets, it is because I can't justify spending hundred of dollars on a toy and not play with it. I know it is a good investment, but I can't stand that fact that I might have a couple brand new sets sitting there waiting for me to sell. I would much rather open it, build it and enjoy it.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404

If either of those things were true, I wouldn't be stocking up on FBs... I'd be sitting on a beach somewhere having a good time. :)

TLG sold 220 million sets last year, they sell 7 sets a second, this is just noise...

I would do that, and go in to the LEGO store and dance like an idiot. Then I would purchase 1 or 2 of every set. ;)

Dont worry LFT once you liquidate your stash next Christmas enjoy your beach vacation:) Heck your IFs might do that by themselves. Sadly I only have 3.

  • LegobrandonCPLegobrandonCP Member Posts: 1,917
Sadly, I have 0 IFs. I only found out about the beauty of his set when it was retired. I seem to always to that with LEGO set. Once a set is EOL'd, I take a took at it and pinch myself for not purchasing it while it was still available.

Darn, I missed this sale early. Didn't find out until after 10pm. Only got some Robie House, Shuttle expedition, GE and MMV.
  • CoolsplashCoolsplash Member Posts: 935
Just wondering. Will it be a good idea to get 4438 Robber's Hideout with current BOGO deal? The price of this set at [email protected] is 39.99 while TRU price is 44.99.

I could ask someone to order these, get free shipping and then ship these out to me (as one way or another I have to pay full shipping to me :P)

Any suggestions on BOGO for a Pakistani LEGO lover?

Didn't feel like staying up all night for the sale to activate, so I missed out on getting more modulars. Congrats to those who got some!
  • dsdg88dsdg88 Member Posts: 133
Thanks @Yellowcastle and @Sidersdd. I'm very happy with a pair of Post Offices. Now I have two of each of the winter sets--and one train.
I could have grabbed my first modulars (GE & FB) but decided to wait and hope for a BOGO50 plus coupon. Maybe there'll be another MC monday.

That is a powerful gamble... You might end up without FB doing that, don't be surprised if it is gone by summer...

LFT, your numbers are off by a magnitude of 10. When the first release of the winter Toy Shop came out, and sold out in about 2 weeks, there was discussion that they had produced 30,000. They've rereleased it twice, but my guess is that there is only around 120,000 ever made over the 3 years.

For the exclusives, I believe the production runs are closer to 20,000. FB might be an anomaly becuase of the parts disaster and the need to send through another production run, but still no where close to the million or even half million you suggest. Think about it from the supply chain side -- there are only about 50 places in the world that you can physically buy the exclusives. TLG, TRU, Target (and probably some other non-US large retailers) only sell them online. If they made 500,000 then each Lego Store might end up with 5,000 copies (half the production run being distributed and half going to online retail warehouses). Think of the physical space required (2 to a case) to store that.

I believe (with no inside knowledge) that the FB had no more than 60,000 produced over its life. The lower demanded exclusives - Taj Mahal, Tower Bridge, etc. are probably only about 20,000 each. The "crossovers" that extend a theme, such as MMV, Diagon Alley, etc. probably around 100,000.

Perhaps... I'll just disagree... In the 2 years since FB has been out, Lego has sold half a billion sets... you're suggesting that out of that number, only 20,000 are FB? Then why even bother? The price per part is cheap, the R&D costs would be high, the distribution costs would be high...

Amazon sells dozens, if not hundreds a day... I would think that Amazon could easily take 10,000 at a time, I've seen them during the holiday's go through 1,000 in a few days. If Amazon sells 200 a day during the holiday season, that would be about 6,000 units for that retailer alone, last Christmas alone...

20,000 isn't nearly enough, you have to account for [email protected], Lego stores, TRU, Target, etc. Plus you have all the non-US retailers, those Amazon sell through numbers are US only, Europe has its own inventory count.

edit: consider for a minute UCS Falcon (10179), it had a collectors edition with numbered certificates from 1 to 10,000, and those sold out pretty quickly, then it was on the market for years... I would think fewer of them are produced than FB... and they must have made a WHOLE lot more than 20,000 of them...

On previous TRU BOGO sales, I've seen things listed as sold out early in the week that became available again later (still during the sale). So keep checking back if you missed out on something.

They cancelled my 2 trains, FB, and my GE, stating that all were out of stock, I ordered at 1am and they were all in stock, so apparently my order got bumped and they gave everything to someone else, I'm not happy

You are probably right, and if a few BOGO50s go by without the modulars in stock I'll probably be ready to just grab them the next time I do get an opportunity.
I'm trying to do better at holding to 30% off--especially since as a new Lego collector last spring I was too quick to act on marginal discounts--but I recognize there are times to be a bit flexible.
This, of course, depends upon my resistance to collecting the modulars remaining futile. Reading this site almost guarantees that.
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
@dsdg88 You'll find that you will not find big discounts on Lego exclusives. These BOGO's really are as good as it gets. Mostly I'll be taken advantage of double VIP as TRU won't let you buy more than one anyway . . . not about to stock up on sets not even close to EOL just to take advantage of a BOGO.

Orders are bound to get canceled, either due to the site not updating fast enough or whatever.
More often than naught if you do not get in on the BOGO within the first hour (even half an hour for the sought after sets) then orders will have a greater chance of getting canceled.
Also, like those have said on the main page thread, keep an eye out over the week for these to appear on the site as they go in and out of stock during the week.

As for those complaining about TRUs dubious limits they impose.
I get that TRU can limit one set in a cart and it helps those get sets and stops those from loading up on those sets, but for goodness sake, at least make the limit number for the item consistent on the TRU site.
Do not list a limit of two in the item's specific page, only to drop the limit to one in the cart when you try to add two into the shopping cart.
Mercifully the Unimog and Excavator limits were two per limit so you could order two of the same set and maximize the value, same with the Maersk train set (most likely with the Unimog and Maersk sets being 10 dollars over retail, it is still a good price).

Also the Log trucks for Technic are BOGO and not limited to 1 as well.

In the U.S., the best you're likely to do on LEGO Direct sets is 25% Off MSRP. This price point can be achieved via BOGO50% at TRU or lucking into a 20% coupon (+ VIP) at a LEGO Store on Black Friday. TRU does run a B2G1 sale once or twice a year but I think you'll find stock very limited and demand very high.

IMO, Dr. Dave's Discount Threshold (DDDT) of 30% is more important overseas where LEGO is much more expensive than here in the U.S. Additionally, it's almost impossible to reach here in the States for sets not sold at the wrongly-vilified TRU.
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
    ^ wrongly-vilified?

I cant give exact numbers of FB's that are produced. But i will say this. I manage the 2nd largest lego store in terms of sells in the South and South western region for Legos in US. Last week we sold 13 fB'S.Thats been about the growing rate for them about the last 2 months and im sure that number will drop once the Town Hall drops. I would assume that about 500k of FB's have been produced which is higher then some of the others due to the problems most people know. I understand that legos sold 225 million sets. But trust me most sets sold are 6858, star wars battle packs, friends anything thats under 25 bucks, and of course the big sellers anything under 50 bucks thats ninjango.

So i understand people buy modulars and some sets 100 plus sell well when i sit down and looks at the numbers.

But of those 225 million sets sold id bet anything that half of those sets are the 50 and under US dollars.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
@canuhandle23 - fair enough, 13 in a week seems reasonable for Jan/Feb... What were sales during Christmas like? I would think they would be moving 50 to 100 a week out of each store.
  • cloaked7cloaked7 Member Posts: 1,448
On the road and out of town today, so was just able to snag a few items before I left.

Not a big spender like some, but did get a few things. I got a couple of excavators, space shuttle & hillside house (not the best BOGO combo, but decent), and a space shuttle and public trans (both $99 and not marked up). I think I will wait on the unimog until later. I already have 2, and built mine (awesome set). If I got anything more I think it would shuttles. What do you think?

    As a recap - -
Looks like a few early birds got some modulars, Maersk train, and MMV, but the are sold out now. Looks like other people are after the excavator, unimog, space shuttle, public transportation, and those are still available. Is that about it? Anything else worth snagging at this time?

^ I was talking about the Shuttle Expedition 10231. It looks to still be in stock. But, TRU limits you to 1 in your cart at a time, so you have to find something else in the $99 range to go with it in order to get the full 50% off. Few $99 things I am interesting in. But, I would like to get more 10231's. I just think this is a good set and will do well when EOL'd. I could be wrong, but it seems they didn't make many, relative to other sets. Already selling for over retail on eBay some of the time. Appears to be out on amazon (course, they may get more in).
