- Having very distinctive different subthemes of characters and environments was also a great win. Particularly genres like Pirate Punk and ETDM (in a parallel universe there’s probably a separate and very popular Lego Punk Pirate theme)
- The BeatBits printed tile collecting gimmick sucked me in (and it appears the Harry Potter equivalent has too) - as long as it’s relatively easy to acquire a good amount in official sets. Printed pieces in general were popular here.
- The stage sets themselves were great fun, often becoming like a mini doll’s house with some ‘lifestyle’ areas themed to a genre that feel like they could be part of a ‘City Music’ subtheme (after all, not all musicians have to be Friends). The Boombox was excellently designed and the foldout function was so smooth - I’d love to have more dual purpose sets like that.
- The marketing and branding was pretty good too - stood out in the marketplace and felt fun (just until people looked at the price tag anyway…)
LEGO, get those prices under control and if you're going to tie it to an app, make sure the app is actually good and something kids want.
But... absolutely excellent job on the design quality of the figures, keep that up!
To keep things on the positive side as The_Rancor said, I'm sure LEGO learned a few valuable tidbits and is a stronger company because of it. Onward and upward.
The sets were decent, the figures were some of the best last year IMO. Series 2 was exciting to wait for in that respect.
The app 'integration' killed this theme. It alienated many and drove the price of the sets waaaaay too high.
Please TLG, no more 'App' themes!
I would argue the marketing wasn't the best too. Releasing 6 Beatboxes upfront wasn't great. Should have put some actual 'stages' up in the initial wave.
However, actually getting the products to market was ridiculous without any ‘conventional’ boxed sets in the first wave. And the pricing. And the fact that it was intended to be a very tactile experience which unfortunately couldn’t be demonstrated well to kids during a pandemic.
But... $$$
Send me the ones you need. I probably have most of them.
