So sometimes I find myself having opinions regarding LEGO that don't typically follow popular convention, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, so feel free to share yours - let's keep it civil.
Personally, I have a couple;
• I don't understand the buzz around Pirates of Barracuda Bay. I do think it looks lovely in its Black Seas Barracuda form, but as the shipwreck, I just think it looks dull and doesn't seem to have much going on. I don't really have any nostalgia for pirates though so I suppose that plays a part.
• I do not care about the state in which my set boxes arrive. As long as the pieces and instructions are fine, I have no problem with creases or dents - it's going in the recycling anyways.
• barring some outliers, I don't really think most LEGO sets are "overpriced". I think many are pretty fair in what is asked when you consider the quality of builds, and to be honest, most sets nowadays go on sale almost immediately. However I do understand the argument about declining print quality, but once that's improved I see no problem with asking prices.
• I have absolutely no problem with stickers! I used to be a bit turned off by them but I think that was the incessant complaining from the community rubbing off on me.
So there's my hot takes. Of course if you have a differing opinion that's fine and I'm welcome to hear any counters, but more so I'd love to hear your controversial opinions.

I’ve chimed in before on the box issue, but I’ll state my case-
1. I really like the box art
2. I have room to keep them
3. Walking around a room filled with lined-up vintage boxed sets makes me feel like I’m perusing the LEGO Vault except I can build any of the sets I want!
4. Keeping boxes increases resale value if I sour on a theme or need money to buy something else
;-)
- I couldn’t care less what the quality of boxes are and I can’t believe people find the space to store them, I struggle with just the models and instructions stacked away together. There are exceptions for really rare items but that in itself is rare.
- I love stickers - sometimes printed parts are printed offset or don’t look quite right (plus there are less of them from the ‘10s onwards). Stickers give people the option of applying them or not
- I also don’t think Lego is generally too overpriced. Sometimes there are things that make the mind boggle (Unikitty Party Time and Resistance Transport Pod i’m looking at you!) but I think Lego’s more or less as expensive as it’d always been.
I also have a couple more edgy ones that I’ve been simmering on for a while:- Maybe it’s a generational thing (because the theme had already gone before I was born) but I don’t get what’s so amazing about Fabuland. Or perhaps more to the point, why do so many people complain about seemingly single use stylised moulds and juniorisation when that’s exactly what the Fabuland fans (and there are many on Lego fan sites) are reminiscing about?
- Ninja (Castle subtheme) is the only ninja-based theme that matters for me. Perhaps having an interest in the historical element and Samurai biases me, but I loved the original moulds, prints and characters they made. Sure there was no ‘big bang’ tv series back then and the parts palette was smaller but it had great character. It did suck that the UK didn’t get the second wave though. The Ninjago Movie subtheme is a great theme on its own but would feel much the same if the Ninjas were just regular young characters or Power Rangers, it has very little to do with ninja by that point.
- Not sure if this is a popular or unpopular opinion but I’m not a big fan of most of the Ideas sets that are churned out, primarily because of licensing. Sets like Barracuda Bay and Old Fishing Store should be what the concept is all about, but on the whole it’s turned into a platform of grasping for licenses, which at a personal level I’m also almost never interested in. Looking forward to the blacksmith shop set though, and maybe the typewriter or piano too, so non-licensing still has a part to play.
Oh and actually an extra one -(I may be lying)
I never wanted/bought a classic space set and still haven’t (even though I was a child of the ‘80s). I was all in for castle and pirates. I dont have modern space sets on my want list either. I made it through the first couple bags of the Saturn V and I don’t know which tub I put the rest of it in. I sure like looking at collection sets of them tho.
I also enjoy what stickers bring to most sets.
I’m disappointed that architecture is a lot of skylines. I don’t like their scale. The Architecture theme used to be gold and that time has passed for me.
brickheadz are boring. I have maybe 40 of them (when they were on discount I just kept grabbing more). I’ll probably part them all out except my holiday & Bill Murray/slimer ones... maybe sell the ones that appreciated.
I have all of the 8 wide speed champions But I won’t be keeping them. Great builds, but I’m not a gearhead and they wouldn’t fit my (still hypothetical) city...Im still buying the 6 wides I missed.
Rogue one is my favorite Star Wars, & I love the sets.
I wish they looked more like this:
I don't the excitement over classic pirate sets and despite my love for classic space as a child, I don't ever want it rereleased.
Another one - Galidor is not as bad as most people make out. Sure, they are completely different from LEGO system. But as an action figure building series, they are quite fun. I bought a load for my kids, and they still get used quite a lot. They are less customisable than Bionicle and the SW buildable figures and similar, but much quicker to build and more robust for play.
Sand Green. Massively overrated. I just cannot understand the clamour for parts in this colour. Yes, it's the perfect fit for something like the Statue or Liberty, but for a duller, more worn out green I much, much prefer Olive Green. And for anything else, Sand Green just isn't anywhere near the top of the list of being a go to colour. It serves very little purpose.
I just want TLG to feel a little less constrained to the ‘we must have a TIE fighter, X-Wing, Millennium Falcon and Snowspeeder on sale at the same time’ business model.
- I'm also a four-stud-width purist where cars are concerned. Again, irrational, given that the poor minifigs struggle to fit even two people into a car, but there you go...
- Nexo Knights had some of the most inventive and fun set designs over the past few years.
I guess that means my unpopular opinion is that modifying LEGO baseplates to suit your needs is just fine.
