Plague busting competition 3: Let's create some magic!

My turn to host another building competition. Some of you might know I'm a big Harry Potter fan and had been looking forward to the newest wave. The magic of those kind of stories just bring a smile and a light in my life. So what better challenge than to make something magical.

I would like you to create a scene that is truly out of the ordinary. It could be to do with Charlie & the chocolate factory, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Nevermoor,... But equally your own wizard or magician story that you made up just for this competition. Or a flying car for those that prefer machines. Just bring us some kind of magic.

I'll build something myself as well, but regretably not had a chance before I launched even though I had the plan for a while. Life has just been crazy... But I think that's for most people at the moment!

So without further ado, unto the rules:
  • Only new builds, so make something special for this competion.
  • It could be as small as you like, but I would put a limit of a 32x32 baseplate as the maximum footprint. If branches or turrets stick out beyond that, that's fine, it's just to have some sort of limit.
  • Maximum 2 pictures per entry, although feel free to link to more off-site. Story-telling is allowed next to the picture too.
  • Feel free to enter multiple times, or if your kids want to take part, feel free to take pictures of their build and enter them as well.
  • We will have this competition run for the whole summer, so until the end of august, so that should give everyone time and chance to have time to enter and delight us.
Don't worry if you are a beginner or if you have a lot of MOC's under your belt, all levels of building are allowed, this is just to have fun, although a little surprise will be send to the winner!

“A little magic can take you a long way.”- Roald Dahl

The problem I see is Lego does not have a lot of pieces to show "magical effects" aside from the blue flame piece. I wish they had a lightning bolt piece. I mean yeah, there's plenty of creative room but it would be cool see "magical energy" in builds like with a wizard duel for example.

I am going the techno-magic route with my own characters (not for this specifically but unreleased creations), but be prepared for a long winded explanation/backstory, and I'll see what I can portray with a duel between a wizard and a monster. Some day I'll get around to making actual stories in this universe.

I didn't know that, will definately use them. My extent of part knowlege outside of sets I know is what exists in Stud.io (which hopefully has those now as that's what I'll be using).

They can be hard to find though, there is a piece that came in several nexo knight sets but is kinda rare otherwise, or one that I've gotten for garmadon's staff in a ninjago set from 2011. I think bionicles or something like that have some big lightning pieces.

Well, Stud.io (2.0) has lightning pieces now, but it doesn't have Enderman legs, 6101874 (AFAIK). I'll have to improvise.

This piece has been in quite a few sets: https://brickset.com/sets/containing-part-6168590

Ok, maybe it's time to rustle the bricks. I got so intimidated by them lately.

Yes, I noted that Stud.io has that now, however, it seems to have a lot of color issues now, for example it has the large technic lightning piece but only shows it in pearl gold (which is wrong, it comes in translucent colors in Nexo Knights). There are also parts which have no color data, including ones that did before in the old Stud.io. Really annoying, but a rant for another thread.

It is definitely not too big! Building LEGO=happiness; building bigger=more happiness; therefore bigger=better!

There is also this which is useful for magic effects from the hand if you want to pose the direction, although it is missing from stud.io as well.

Mine has a whole story in development but I'll try to keep it as short as possible to prevent a text wall.

Welcome to the techno-magic world of Charles Maxwell, a light wizard who started out lighting the last of the gas streetlights in his town in the Edwardian era until he lost his job to full electrification. He studied to be and electrician and was about to apply for a job when he found an old Arabic book in his father's archaeological artifacts. He had it translated and found it to be a book on creating magic candles and oil lamps. After many experiments he found he could create many different magical light sources with different applications emitting an inter-dimensional energy he calls Z-rays. The public and patent office thought of him as a crazy charlatan, despite his impressive displays of power. He even worked in secret with Tesla, who after already suffering his own failures in the past (Wardenclyff), backed out of the partnership when Charles started taking things way too far. Rightly so too, as he had a serious mishap when his Resonant Moontower he was trying to control the weather with malfunctioned and summoned an intelligent inter-dimensional entity known as a Light Beast or Light Wraith. A supernatural cybernetic creature with a mostly organic body and limbs but a magical electric lamp for a head (capable of incinerating things), and a generator with circuits and wiring in his body. Charles escaped, but a massive cover-up led most to believe he was dead.

NOTE: The brick-built Light Beast body appears more mechanical than it's supposed to be. Also, yes, I exceeded the size limit, but I was already too far in to change it when I remembered and would have had to cut a lot out to fix it.

Some great entries. Couple more days for entries, unless someone gives me a shout they want a week extension or so :)

Only 4 entries? Should there be an extension?
  • snowhitiesnowhitie BelgiumMember Posts: 2,977
If anyone is still planning something, let us know and we could definitely let it run a bit longer, otherwise I'll launch a vote via PM in a couple of days.

I don’t think you have to be constrained by that- when you walk into DisneyWorld they say “Have a magical day!”, so maybe go the Mouse route? :-)

Anybody who follows me online knows I love trains, and, though, they aren't MAGICAL necessarily,  I think they're amazing. And, if you've followed me for a long time, then you know I dream of being a LEGO set designer, especially on trains, and Disney. This is a small, microscale version of a certain project of mine,  which, if I had my way, I'd have LEGO release as a GWP when someone buys the set. One can dream...Bonus if you can spot what element I'm adding to the project, yet haven't announced....(It's not the tunnel... Go look at the project, and see what's missing...) (Yes, it's a render, but I don't have access to my physical parts, currently.) https://ideas.lego.com/projects/8b153541-1956-42b7-bfec-a8f31755bc7e
