Need suggestions for cameras/software for making Lego movies

My son's 10th birthday is coming up, and I was planning on getting him a camera and/or software he could use to make his own stop-motion Lego movies. He's been making his own amateur movies using his tablet's video camera, so I thought I'd give him the tools to take it to the next level. Any suggestions on easy-to-use, yet affordable, cameras and software that would be appropriate for a 10 year old aspiring to make his own stop-motion videos?

This might be too simplistic for the level your son is at, but when my son was younger, he used the Stop Motion Explosion software to make a few LEGO stop motion films:

Depending on what tablet he has, the camera may well be good enough. The good thing about having a big screen compared to on a normal camera) is that it is very easy to adjust the shot for the next frame, plus the software often shows differences.

It's OK, but keeping it still can be a challenge. 

I would have thought a mobile phone and a tripod mount thingy would be an optimal solution when starting out.

My son (11) uses "Stop Motion Studio" on his android tablet. He seems to get on with it just fine. It has a difference mode, which makes planning the next shot easier. I've never actually used it, but he enjoys playing with it. Mainly with action figures rather than with lego though.

edit: He did build a stand out of lego to keep his tablet still though.
