Insane auction listings

Just saw this one on eBay with a starting bid of $549k and a BIN price of $700k. I am no collector so I consider this listing insane.

Love the topic. My old house-mate and I had competitions in front of the TV to see who could find the most random/over priced auctions of ebay and gumtree.

    AUD$3,000 for a 7191 X-wing

AUD$6,000 BIN for first 6 modulars all of which are already Built

Have you ever watched shows like Pawn Stars? Plenty of people out there really think their stuff is worth solid gold... That clown bank actually would be worth less than that if it WAS solid gold! :)

    Crazy people...

Or, perhaps they just figure they'll toss it out there to see if anyone bites, or e-mails them and makes them an offer.

Right now there is a 10179 on eBay for $10,000. Not as insane as the above, but so far above market price as to be a waste of time.

I'm sure they know its ridiculously over the market price, but why do they do it? Is it to pull the market price up with false speculation? Use a few fake accounts to overprice and then use 1 real account to actually sell the item that is now worth a little more speculatively?

if the market dictates that an item is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it... and someone has the money to buy it... more power to 'em and the seller hits a grand slam. Insane, yes but you never know what crazy, eccentric, rich people are out there.

@LFT yeah I love watching those shows, like Pawn Stars or Storage Wars. I'm surprised by the overestimation of owners as you stated. But I'm also surprised by the extremely high prices for stuff I would have assumed was junk, such as wooden decoy ducks going for over $1K. Who would've known unless they were a collector already.

@Bosstone100 very true, in the end it is decided by the person willing to buy at that price point. But when applicable, the speculation factor does add to the price of a commodity above its true intrinsic value. Look at oil and diamonds, not worth as much on a practical level (use on daily or industrial basis) than it is from the perceived value of rarity multiplied by quality (and don't get me started on Sports Cards & Comics) All through the ripple effect of speculation, leading to creation of a new market on a broad base. Hence, >3xRRP Modulars and the like. The question is always sustainability though.

This listing isn't as insane at first glance, but it intends to deceive-- you are getting only one minifigure for $10k. At least that's how I read it.
