Only 1,091 sets? Don't people on BrickSet have even more?
  • jadeirenejadeirene Member Posts: 474
^ That's what I'm thinking. 1,091 sets is a lot, but it seems like some people here would have much, much more than that. I think some of you need to start calling up the Guinness people.

I think on the "parts count" I have WAY more!!

Just to clarify, he's got the record for the most sets *assembled*, not the most sets!

^ Also, apparently needed the original instructions to count towards the record - but it doesn't say anything about needing to have the box.

The article won't load for me, but I think I've seen this before and had a similar debate about many afols having more than that. Think it was also the case that the chap (or at least the one I read about) had assembled and laid out the sets specifically for the record attempt (he had tables laid out all over the house to display them!) rather than them being on constant display.

Seems a lot less then 1091 sets. But I can see lots of small sets as well. He has the whole Fantasy Era range (drools) and some Kingdoms too. Wish I had the space and privacy to keep the assembled sets.

Too true; I can almost match this guy's number of official sets with instructions, but since my NLSO hates seeing even one set in the public areas of the house, I'll never be able to attempt such a record...

Wether or not his collection is small compared to other people, you've still gotta hand it to the guy. I mean, he pretty much turned his house into one, massive display cabinet; just imagine cleaning them all!

My wife will claim that our kids have put together a thousand sets since Christmas!

I don't know about BrickSet, but I've meet people on Lugnet know have way more. There a few people that are in 2,500-4,000 range, one guy is in the 8,000 range and I though someone over 10,000 sets.

Is that 10,000, built and displayed all at the same time?

I highly doubt it. I got the feeling a lot were in storage. For the life of me can't seem to remember the guy's name now. I thought he was from Germany or the Netherlands. Absolutely a wonderful person to talk online, friendly, outgoing, and incredibly knowledgeable.

Maybe I missed this in the article, but was the record for assembled and displayed sets or just number of sets? If its assembled and displayed sets that might be a cool record. It gets really hard to find room for every thing. I don't envy on having to take them apart. I'm doing a mini version of that.

1000+ battlepacks or polybags (or perhaps collectible minifigures) would put someone well on the way to beating that record with minimal space issues. I wonder if there are any criteria re the size of the sets/ no. of pieces etc.

I am sure quite a few people have more, but that is still a very cool collection. I would be so excited to get a world record. Thanks for sharing the link.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Of course part of it is that he actually "applied" for the world record... :)

Just because someone has done more, if they haven't told anyone about it, it doesn't really get "recorded". :)

I agree with @Dfenz, 1,000 polybags would be pretty easy to do, I had over 1,000 polybags from the last Target clearance, I'll post the picture here again, so do I "win"?

Or do I actually have to open and build them all? :)

I think that in order to qualify, all the sets must be unique, which is quite a lot harder than just having a bunch of the same sets. I'm sure there are plenty of collectors out there with more sets, but as someone said above, he is the first to go through the record verification process with Guinness Book of Records.

Also, from the information that came up on another board where a friend of this collector posted last year, I'm not sure the sets needed to be built, but they needed to be available for the public to view, so he opened his house for everyone and built them all to make it worthwhile for people to come see them. In that regards I'd say he is quite worthy as record holder.

Just for fun, I went over to the "wall" to count what we've built...

Yikes, it is a lot less than I thought... Not counting polybags, just the boxed sets, we have 91 sets built and displayed...

Hmm, it seems low, but that is the count... Perhaps I'm spending too much time looking at the boxes and not enough time building? :)
  • avoiceoreasonavoiceoreason Member Posts: 224
My son went through and counted our displayed sets the other day after seeing this and we were at 357. If we went through and built everything, I bet we could get pretty close. Both the boys love flipping through the World Record books and would be thrilled if they could actually get one.

I think my wife is afraid they might get inspired. :)

    @LegoFanTexas Yes. Get building!
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
@LFT do you have more than 1,000 unique sets in your 'inventory'?
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Probably not... I suspect I might have 300 or so unique sets, but not a thousand... A thousand is several years worth of Lego releases, with everything they have sold at retail, I've only been back into this for a year, and haven't bought that many retired sets...
