Is there any change in the material being used to make Lego bricks over the year?

Some people said that Lego may have used different plastics or compositions in recent years to make their bricks, compared to that in 80s or early 90s. Is it real or confirmed officially or just a legend?

By the way, why ABS plastic is chosen to make Lego? What is its special properties that makes it
the candidate for Lego bricks
