I guess I should add one other detail: I put the minifigs and little presents into a pretty small clip lid case, rather than loose in the zip lock bags with the other stuff.
Or, in all seriousness, continue to use the bags, but either stack or line up the bagged sets in a storage cabinet. I prefer the Iris brand of plastic cabinet/racks for my polys, but they would also work fine for bagged sets. (I also label the drawers for easier retrieval.)
Also, this is what approximately 800 polybags looks like. (Ridiculous.)
