Lego Replay - recycling used Lego for schools - US

Looks like Lego is piloting a program for people to return bricks to then be donated to schools in the United States.  (queue lots of jokes about people volunteering for the bricks to be sent to them to be "recycled")
Glad to see that Lego is being proactive about this, and I hope the project is successful in getting Lego into the hands of schoolchildren.

From a purely environmental standpoint, I'd think it would be better just to donate them to a needy family or a school in your local area, rather than shipping them all across the country multiple times (sent to Alabama, then out to places, including Boston).
