Discussions no longer jump to latest post

I've noticed that the when I click on a discussion, it no longer scrolls to the latest unread post anymore. The #latest is still in the URL, but there doesn't appear to be any posts with id="latest" in them anywhere, so that doesn't do anything.

Has something changed?

Yeah it is rather frustrating on mobile having to scroll super far to find a new post

Having said that, it does seem to be working on some discussions again... just not all.

Yes same thing happening here on Safari on iPhone

Guessing this is probably a glitch related to legofan2 having his posts removed. That would explain why only some threads are acting up. The timing seems to fit too.
  • AstrobricksAstrobricks Member Posts: 5,440
I’ve noticed this too. It just takes me to the top of the last page, not the earliest post I haven’t read yet.

Of course, on threads with a lot of pictures embedded, it has never worked right. I always have to do a bunch of scrolling if the latest page is long. I actually avoid some threads like the Builders Guild Share Your MOCs one because of this.

It appears that the problem is working itself out. I saw several threads that had the problem this morning, but got new posts this afternoon, and when I checked the newer posts it jumped right to the newest post.

I think it only occurs the first time you see a thread (since the problem showed up). So if you went on a thread yesterday and it had new comments, it'd take you to the top, but if you went on it again today and it had new comments, it'd take you to those comments like normal. Perhaps the forum has "forgotten" what comments users have read.

No matter how many times I go back to the “How many sets do you own?” thread, it always takes me to the top of the last page.

    Same on “Help identifying parts...”

And the “[US] Toys R Us Deals” thread.

    And the Brag thread.

^^^^^^Oh my gosh, you're telling me Legofan2 lives on???  Or rather, we are seeing the aftermath of Legofan2??? Wow...

Sorry for not quoting...wanted to see how many carets that would be lol

Yeah, it just happened to me on the Brag thread and earlier on the Lego Status thread. It seems to happen without rhyme or reason.

Could well be. Something similar happens when threads are merged or split, so probably an issue with post counting.
  • pxchrispxchris Member Posts: 2,342
It's been happening to me seemingly randomly as well.

I was wondering if it might be a simple issue of cleaning out my browser cache and cookies, but that doesn't seem to be it.

The brag thread just rolled to a new page. We’ll see if that fixes it for that thread. Have to get a bunch more people to brag first :)
  • omniumomnium Member Posts: 831
"What's your LEGO 'status' today?" rolled to a new page earlier and the problem has gone away...

if the problem is related to legofan2, I wonder if it disappears once enough posts have been made to replace the ones that were deleted?

Clearly I missed something.  What happened with Legofan2?  Quit?  Banned?  Didn't survive Thanos's snap?

I noticed this issue too.  Was wondering what was up.  Just found this thread so good to know not just me.

Also, something else I noticed that seems to have started same time.  Let's say I'm on page 8 of 9.  I then move to page 9.  I click back button on browser and it doesn't go back to page 8.  Stays on page 9 I think.  Or at least I'm seeing some weired behavior with back that I don't remember before.  Maybe same issue?

So I'm assuming the Legofan2 thing is related to the new age guideline I saw HUW put out there...

^ I had that different behaviour of the 'back' button for a few days. Now it's gone back to normal. No idea why.

I’m pretty sure this is the “go to last page read” feature doing its thing. When you went to page 8, it was the last page you read. Then you go to page 9 and that becomes the last page you read. So, when you hit Back, it reloads “last page read”, which is now page 9. While slightly annoying, this behavior has been consistent since I’ve been on the forum.

And, yes on the age thing.

As of a few days ago, at least Back refreshes the discussions list with the latest read/unread state. It changed a few months ago and was annoying me.

OK, I spoke too soon, Back updates on my phone, but still not on my desktop computer. Blugh.

I’ve gotten the impression that whether Back results in an update of the page you go back to depends on the browser. I think Safari, for example, usually assumes you wouldn’t need an update already. But, I do remember it working the other way for quite a while.

I'm pretty sure the problem with not jumping to end of page has to do with the removal of LegoFan2's posts. If a post was removed, the thread does not jump to end of page until a new page starts. Most of the threads I have visited are working properly again, but a few, like the one below, still come up at the top of the page. It's on page 88 right now, maybe page 89 will straighten it out.

Yup. That’s pretty much what we figured.

It’s a good argument for having a “deleted” substitution when a post is removed, like you see on places like reddit.

    Lego Fan 2.0. He's gone.
  • benbacardibenbacardi Member Posts: 712
Must have... the brag thread says "most recent by thehoarder" but I click through and the last post is one I've already read by somebody else...

Banned users seem to be treated in a rather janky way by the forum software!

He was the previous one. And he’s just in silent purgatory. He still occasionally Likes a post.

That’s the name I was wondering about. He sounded young so probably violated the “no one under 18” rule.

I think @klinton was referring to the speculation that thehoarder was one and the same person as LegoFan2 - there were certainly indicators. They're both in silent purgatory now, it seems!

Oh, quite possibly. I missed the subtle “2.0” reference, seeing as his moniker is LEGOFan2.
