SDCC 2019 Exclusive Minifigures/Sets Discussion

mattytreksmattytreks Member Posts: 201
Last year I started the SDCC thread in May -- a topic that only covered the exclusive minifigures.  This year I thought we'd start a month early, and include exclusive sets, as well!  So let's get to it!

There's a lot speculation and anticipation around SDCC this year.  On one hand, it is the 50th Anniversary of San Diego Comic-Con, and that could mean a particularly extraordinary year for exclusives.  For that very reason, I've had my sights set on SDCC 2019 since the last day of SDCC 2018.  Of course, we all know LEGO typically does not divulge any of their Comic-Con plans until just a few weeks prior to...so we've got plenty of time to kill.

On the other hand, we saw LEGO do something very intriguing with this year's Star Wars Celebration exclusive Darth Vader Bust set -- it became a Target shared exclusive.  Could that be a sign of what's to come for their SDCC exclusives?

Have SDCC minifigure/set predictions?  Going to SDCC this year and brimming with excitement?  Thoughts on possible SDCC shared exclusives?

It's your time to sound off!  Let's get some hot takes to tide us over until July :)

I’m going to SDCC, but would certainly not be disappointed if they do not have Marvel/DC exclusives. As far as predictions, I’ll go with the safe bet of another Marvel Deadpool variant and another DC TV series like Doom Patrol.

Hopefully it is not a Batman exclusive for the 80th anniversary or Stan Lee. Those would make it pricey unless they distribute much more of them than years past.

No Guardians... No Guardians... No X-Men... No X-Men... No Cable... No Cable...

Perhaps something related to the Marvel Disney+ properties.

^I heard it was an official Stan Lee Minifigure holding a printed Amazing Spiderman #1 tile.

I think in honor of Stan Lee, they need to release a minifigure of him and all his cameos from the MCU.

I’d like some totally uninteresting sets without exclusive figures. Because jealously. ;)

I do like the Stan Lee idea though

It should really be a FF No. 1.

@vwong19- I definitely think LEGO will do something to commemorate Batman's 80th.  I'd be thrilled even if it were a poster not unlike what we saw last year for Superman's 80th.  That was an incredibly cool poster and I'm still planning on framing it.

As for Stan, I'm sure they'll do a little something.  @Pitfall69 that is an absolutely amazing thought, but I can hear the groaning worldwide now if LEGO had a con-exclusive Stan minifigure...

    Minifigure Predictions
    • Marvel: I think we'll see Black Widow or related character to promote Marvel's first film of 2020
    • DC: no guess at all since they've given us Vixen and Black Lightning the past two years ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Set Predictions
    • Marvel: Spiderman Far From Home-themed playset
    • DC: Joker Bust (OMG have you guys seen the trailer yet?!?!)
    • Star Wars: Star Destroyer Command Bridge w/Darth Vader & Grand Moff Tarkin minifigures

Seeing as it's the 80th anniversary of Batman, and we've already had an exclusive Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, I reckon we might get a rainbow suited Batman.

I think there is enough Stan Lee cameos to warrant a Stan Lee CMF series. I would love a CMF figure of him with a 2 x 2 ti!e of the mall rats movie.

I really hope it is not a Ronin version of Hawkeye!  I just realized this version is not available in any of the avengers end game sets.

Maybe we'll get a couple of follow-up sets after the movie is released.  One with all of the spoiler characters we don't even know we want!

I'm hopng it's not a Stan Lee tribute fig. I want that much more widely available.
  • mattytreksmattytreks Member Posts: 201
One thought that escaped me until just now:

It would be a very neat tribute if LEGO offered the San Diego Comic-Con 'Toucan' mascot as one of their minifigure giveaways -- to commemorate the 50th anniversary and all.  Or perhaps a Toucan bust?

I've actually heard unreliable rumors that Funko may be doing a similar tribute this year with their Pop! figure lineup.

It's not a widely known character...so that should ease at least some of the belly-aching for the masses, worldwide, who aren't attending.

Disney said no plans for X-Men till phase 4 is over in 5 years. Of course that could change, but it looks like 5 years till a X-Men movie.
  • playwellplaywell Member Posts: 2,280
But we could see comic based sets at any time.

I think one question for X-Men sets or minifigs would be did LEGO still have a deal in place with Fox to make them and if there was did that transfer over to Disney in the deal. Or would Disney and TLG need to rework their current agreement to include X-Men (and other mutant properties). Just a thought and I have no clue one way or the other.
  • Th1nDieselTh1nDiesel Member Posts: 591
^ Since the Lego sets are based on comic book iterations of the X-Men characters and weren't based on a particular film, I doubt Lego ever had an agreement with Fox. I imagine it's covered by the Marvel license. If rumour is to be believed, Marvel reduced licenses for FF and X-Men merchandise in order to prevent promotion of the Fox movies.

And who knows - they could still opt to do another Deadpool movie and incorporate some X-Men into that franchise.  Disney is never adverse to making money.

(But I agree that we're probably done with 'regular' X-Men movies for awhile.  Thankfully!)

I believe all merchandising is under Disney.  This is why there weren't any toys produced to coincide with the x-men and FF movies because disney/marvel didn't want to promote these franchises.  They sacrificed merchandising revenue to pressure fox to get those franchises back.

Disney wouldn't have purchased the Fox intellectual properties without having control over all of those agreements.  I'm sure it'll take a fair amount of time and legal wrangling to sort through all of it and negotiate new deals.

From what I recall, LEGO did not have a licensing deal with Fox.  The produced X-Men sets were part of a Marvel license related to the comic books and television properties - and were careful not to resemble any of the movie properties or characters.

(When Marvel licensed the characters for films, they were smart to retain things like videogame licensing, etc.)

Back to SDCC-related news, something to look out for this year is a new policy around the limiting the number of exclusive lottery entries, per day, that attendees can enter.  This revised policy was just introduced at WonderCon -- a testing ground of sorts for CCI as it pertains to changes at San Diego Comic-Con.

The exclusives lottery at SDCC was newly implemented last year, and attendees were able to enter every single lottery, if they wanted, so long as that individual held a badge for the day of that lottery draw.  This resulted in large numbers of attendees signing up for just about everything (even things they didn't necessarily want) in order to increase their odds of winning something.

Exactly how many entries per day CCI is going to allow each attendee remains to be seen, but am hopeful tweak to the system increases the chance of those who actually want LEGO exclusives to win them.

Another item of note is that of unclaimed exclusives.  There were literally scores of minifigures and sets to be scooped up on Sunday last year.  So if you're attending on Sunday and don't win the LEGO lotteries, worry not...you very well may still have a chance of getting something that last day.

Now that's a cool looking exclusive, LEGO keeps using the wrong hairpiece for Carol, but the set as a whole looks great.

Isn't this a big change in that these are new figures where as these sets usually come with figures we have got before expect for rocket who turn up in a polybag later.

Definitely a big change as we've yet to see "exclusive" minifigs in these boxed style exclusives.  Predominately all common parts, but fancy packaging.  This has both.

This set is a pass for me.  Just doesn’t quite resonate...

Last year LEGO really outdid themselves with their set box artwork.  One could argue the 2018 artwork was more impressive than the sets themselves – that’s how good the art was.

This year, however...with the first set, we get...an oversized picture of LEGO Captain Marvel?  *sigh*

I think LEGO considers those marketing/promotional items.  I'm sure their pledge to avoid regional exclusives only applies to retail releases, and not this type of thing.

I'm indifferent at the moment because we all know TLG do this year in year out and I've somewhat become immunised to it over the years, but can see where people continuously get frustrated because unique parts & especially Minifigs are a bit of a sore point if you like licensed themes...

... (holding back the anger) until the Star Wars exclusive is revealed to have Saw Gerrera in it ;)
