Working traffic lights

Hello all

Can anyone give me some ideas for setting up some working traffic lights for a Lego city layout?

I'm thinking of lights similar to the ones in the Xtra #40311 set (only probably with a different stand, since the included piece is not hollow), probably with some micro-LEDs threaded into them, and maybe an Arduino controlling them.

I've seen various pre-made lighting kits- lightmybricks.com, bricksdelight.com, i-brix.com- but they all seem a bit expensive. There are also some DIY type videos like https://youtu.be/iiH3SMs12wI  which look more reasonable.

I'm going to have a go at it myself but if someone has some ideas I can borrow then that makes it easier :)
