Cataloging Loose Parts

I've started to acquire a sizable collection of loose parts from various bulk purchases. I would like to get into building MOCs and custom items. I've got the items sorted by type into parts bins, but have not idea on quantity or color of each item.

I'm considering going through the items and entering them into a Brickstock list, but this will obviously be very time consuming.

Does anyone else keep a catalog list of loose parts? I have all my sets cataloged, have a Bricklink store, but these items are not part of any list or collection and was wondering what others do.

    You can keep a parts inventory on Rebrickable and it'll tell you what sets/MOCs (other people's, obviously) you can build. Interesting to see Brickset going down this line, the parts database here is very incomplete as it uses the data Lego provides.

    Is the IKEA LEGO furniture being announced? Or would that be more of a storage topic?

    @drdavewatford, not initially but if there's a standard file format, and element IDs match, then it may well be possible.

    It will certainly be possible to export parts wanted lists as BrickLink XML on day 1.

    I don't bother to catalogue parts. If you buy sets, then adding parts to a database is easy enough but for job lot collections it can take a long time.

    @Huw will it be possible to count certain sets as part of your parts collections? I usually break up most of my sets for parts, so a lot of my parts will already be counted as part of my collection anyway.

    I don't want to count 100 of one part and enter it into my collection, only for it to say I have 130 of them because it's also counting parts from sets, which are already in my loose parts.

       I'm thinking that the loose parts will be labeled like loose minfigures. You will have two dispalys, one for a part in your collection and one for your loose parts in the same field.

    That is the problem. A catalogue is fine if you build then dismantle a MOC, so parts are always available. But if you have to log parts out when you build then log them back in again when you dismantle a MOC, building becomes a chore. And if you don't, then the list is next to useless.

    As long as it's editable so you can inevidably remove those fragile bits that always break (like levers).

    I've implemented it exactly the same way as the minifigs in that you own parts by virtue of owning the sets they come in, and you can now also own parts loose, which are shown separately.

    You can also want parts and, unlike minifigs, can enter the number you want.

    Personally I can see no use for the feature as I'm not about to start inventoring my 10^6  collection but I know a lot of people are clamouring for it.

    It's probably useless for people that already have a massive collection, but a great help for people just starting one.

    ^ You are right for a collection that is that large.  If I had the time it would be good to add my loose parts but they most likely exceed 10^5 times two or three,  that's just too big for me. Maybe my new loose PaB parts would be ok.

    @Huw will it be possible to not include my set parts... I don't count those as loose part for my builds as they are part of the sets... where as if I can 'part out' a set / add individual parts into my loose parts that would be good.

    ^ Not as it stands, but they are indicated separately so you can tell the difference.

    I suspect in time I will add more features once people start using it and suggesting ways to improve it.

    Ok...it's a good start! I suppose most will either want it one way or another. So a simple (if it is simple!) check box to untick to not include would be handy.

But joking in my first post aside, it would be entirely possible to make an app that identifies, and catalogs if you want, any lego peice just by photo'ing it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outline_of_object_recognition You could also indentify the amount by weighing them (with a little bit of error).

    Thinking of opening a second brickset account just for my parts - for example I've 2 years of LUGbulk to sort out... I know the quantities so it will be good to have a control of it like that. Would a second account be frowned upon(some sites wouldn't allow it.)?
