Is your significant other into Lego?

edited January 2012 in Everything else LEGO
The other day, my wife (who likes Lego, but does not share my hobby of Lego) came into the room and joined me in building some Lego furniture for a couple of hours. It was a relaxing couple of hours and the resulting Lego furniture turned out great. She does not normally express much interest in Lego.

So, now my curiosity is piqued. How many of you have a significant other that shares your Lego hobby? Is it something that developed over time?

mine had never touched them until i met her - she was immediately hooked on the architecture line and finds the friends line absolutely adorable. we built a few of the toy story sets with her nieces right before the holidays and it was a blast to see all their eyes light up.

That's cool. So it will truly be a family hobby.

My wife enjoys that I've taken a big interest with my son in the hobby but was never really that interested till she started going to the Lego Store with me more often and has taken a shine to Modular build sets, Diagon Alley plus loves the whole Friends line since she feels will inspire future lady engineers.

I wish, but at least she recognised that it should be something I can share with my son when he is old enough. I hear the winter sets sometimes win over a spouse so might try that next christmas.

Mine considers it another waste of time :) But its fun to make her go 'Wow' when she finds out someone from Russia or Greece or even Denmark has bought Lego from us :P and no wife would like her husband to inject more and more money into Lego. As to a lot of people in this world Lego is yet another toy, and toys are meant to buy, play, break and pushed out as junk or handed over to others. Its sad yes. Too many people in my country especially consider Lego as an expensive waste of time, but its fun when people who turn into customers visit my place, sit in our cosy living room and see me bring out big cartons full of Lego :) so my job is to create more awareness and educate people in Lego.

My wife has built loads of models with me, we usually take an instruction book each. Yesterday we sat at the dining room table together building the joust and chatting, it's a very nice way to spend the evening.

My wife likes that I have a hobby that I'm really into (even if she doesn't quite realise the true extent of the buying!), but she doesn't build with me - she's happy to hang out with me when I'm building though.

Annoyingly the modular sets have given her an unreaslistically high expectation of what ALL Lego sets should look like , so she does have a tendancy to be distinctly underwhelmed by the more standard sets, and she has little taste for Star Wars either!

yes, my husband likes to build, he helped the children with a few sets at christmas and has built a little buggy with some odd bits of technic. I think he would like to build more stuff but he knows that i like to build my sets so lets me get on with it, he has his other hobbies as well so he likes to spend his money on that, so i don't mind too much if he wants to spend £150 on kite stuff as i can then get some nice Lego.

my husband has got more and more into it. He's always built the big things with me (modulars and MMV) but has little taste for things that aren't MISB, whereas I love sorting old lego. He has his own lego pile now, SW and planes mostly, and I probably spend more on him than on me.
We do really enjoy building together (even if its seperate sets) as it's great relaxing time together. And we both enjoy playing with our niece and nephew. I'm mostly pleased he's into it, and is quite relaxed about what I spend (as I also sell) but he's costing ME a fortune!

I suspect partners like or dislike for LEGO will be significantly influenced by two things if they are not *into* LEGO at the outset at least the many cases:

    1) The real or perceived cost of acquiring LEGO
    2) The 'impact' it has on other areas of life - e.g. LEGO everywhere in the house - loose or built, the amount of time spent pursuing LEGO sets or deals on LEGO, or on forums (!), etc.

If the negatives associated with these don't cause them to form a strong dislike then you have a chance to win them around over time. Mine is coming around having built with my child and found it relaxing and having seen the Winter sets and said 'I like the look of that'...so the recent sale on the Winter Toy Shop is well timed ;-)
  • zenparticlezenparticle Member Posts: 38
^ So very true. Perhaps I just need a better storage solution and an automated process to find deals. That would certainly help.

I think I may have managed to win over my wife with the winter themed sets. She helped build those and seemed to enjoy it. Perhaps she is just warming up to Lego.

My wife is an AFOL-- that's how we met! Christmas is a LEGO extravaganza.

    The difficulties have been:

    1) Combining our LEGO collections. This is where you discover just how different everyone's sorting nuances are. We can argue for long periods of time about where certain pieces should go!

    2) Sometimes, we buy LEGO gifts for each other... I mean... ourselves... or... yeah.

    3) Who gets to build that new awesome set?

    4) Who watches the baby, and who gets to go to the LEGO event?

Otherwise, it's great to actually have someone you can discuss LEGO with on a regular basis!

Initially I purchased a few ferrari sets for my husband whom seem to spike an interest in legos sets ( Neither one of us were able to afford these as a child). After building a few with him, I have become a full blown fan of Lego. He things it is quite excessive the amount I have purchased since. But he loves that I have a hobby that we both can enjoy (more me). Plus our twin boys love legos as well.

We fight over who gets to build new sets! I had tons of Lego as a child and my husband never had any. I recently got my collection back from when I was a child and that really got my husband excited about Lego. So now we are both Lego freaks-- I mean AFOLs--and its all over our house! We also have a 3 year old son that is very into Lego and a 1 year old daughter that is into destroying all things Lego :P

My husband and I always build Lego together and we also fight over who builds what lol! I first got our son a Pirates of the Caribbean Lego set and my husband and I instantly got hooked, this was last June/July since then we have loads of Lego sets! It's a great way to spend time together and I completely recommend it to all couples!

@davee123 Your wife is an AFOL?? That has to be the greatest LEGO understatement of all time... ;-) Suzanne has to be the reigning "Queen of LEGO AFOL's!" lol...

But some "significant other" aren't so understanding. I know of more than one AFOL who has had LEGO packages delivered to their work location, rather than at home. Others are much more accomodating (it could be a lot worse... collecting motorcycles, for example!).

And sadly, I know of 1 AFOL who's wife divorced him because of LEGO... (I'm sure there must have been other circumstances)... for "Rob" from Pennsylvania...

My husband is not into Lego, but he is WAY into spoiling me! :-) He absolutely supports my hobby and loves to buy me things. He would buy one of everything on Lego.com if I'd let him! He is designing a Lego room for me and does all the housework so I have time to build! For Valentine's Day, we are going to Legoland Florida. How romantic is that?!?! ;-)

My wife wasnt in to lego till we got married she had never touched ones other then duplos. And now she gets to build all the sets and i get to make all the town lay outs. We even went to legoland fl for our honeymoon, she even let me make all centerpieces for our wedding out of legos! Now she cant stop play with MY legos!

All these comments are the stuff I like to hear. I think it is very cool that so many families get hooked on Lego. I have found it to be a great way to spend time with my kids. They are very much interested in Lego. I think my wife is interested, but just has not had the experience with them yet.

^I very much hope this becomes the case with my family and hope it can be something we all enjoy in few years time when my son is older.

My wife likes the more detailed builds like Diagon Alley (which 'Santa' got us for Christmas). Generally she stays away from the smaller sets, but knows she would love the modular line if we could afford them.

Mine said something similar about sex! 0_o Actually, my wife said she'd be more into LEGO if I didn't seem so pre-occupied by it, which is fair comment, seeing as I talk about it way too much. So for the past year I've bitten my tongue - and lo & behold, she wanted to build the Pet Shop together over Christmas.

    My significant other is LEGO.
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
At the moment I don't have a significant other. Perhaps that's an idea for a future contact ad:

"I'm looking for someone who doesn't mind me being a Lego addict. If you're also into Lego, that's a bonus. It would be especially interesting if you own the UCS MF, the three first modular buildings and perhaps also some old Pirate sets (with boxes, of course)".
  • LostInTranslationLostInTranslation Member Posts: 5,572
@duchessa: lol, I'd fight you for him!
  • Si_UKNZSi_UKNZ Member Posts: 4,179
And I can just imagine the next headline on the front page:
"Prices for the UCS MF rise 50% on eBay as suitors clamour to meet the requirements of a date with Duchessa!"

@Si_Dorking_Surrey_UK - Well, let's just say that I take full responsibility for the recent price jump on the Cafe Corner and Market Street.. :-)

My missus has grown to like (more like "tolerate") my LEGO collection. Having said that, she describes my Sand Crawler (10144) as a big square brown block. Cut me to the quick, that did.

Having spent 20ish years collecting Star Wars figures, a hobby my wife viewed as beyond pointless she is now accepting of my Lego hobby (which has replaced the SW one), mostly this is because Lego takes up less room than the SW toys and because I open up the Lego and build it with the kids, she has even bought the odd bit of Lego for me but I wouldn't go so far as saying she supports the hobby outright, rather she has seen alternatives and Lego is a better alternative.

    Very cute, @devilhead.

While out, my cell phone rand and my boyfriend asked "what are you possibly shopping for this long?". I replied, "what do you think?". His retort, "It is not possible, every LEGO is here in this house.". So, no, he is not into it and doesn't get it! ( @SparkyHam, that was not a comment about sex! ;) )
  • littletokilittletoki Member Posts: 519
My husband and I both share this hobby/obsession/addiction. We grew up with LEGO but went into a decades long dark ages - we try not to think about that too much because it's so painful. All the lost sets... *sigh*

We both love the building process, reading blogs, forums and oohing and ahhing over MOCs that we will never have the creativity and genius to build. Luckily, we never fight over who's going to build what - his interests lie more in ships and mine are buildings.

Sometimes I think it might be better to have a spouse who's not quite as interested and supportive. At least then, they might be able to put some limits on the spending. LOL.
  • AmikoAmiko Member Posts: 97
Mrs Amiko understands that I collect all sorts of toys but I had to stop buying LEGO to focus on Character Options' Doctor Who figures - it was a compromise based on finances really but I do joke that my wife has 'banned' me from LEGO...

Shhhh! I've managed to start buying again... ;)

Mrs Amiko is OK with it, although I think she prefers the five inch figures as they're easier to display. I'm on a LEGO Harry Potter trawl right now, and my other half has made some positive noises about The Burrow, so as long as I'm careful with juggling the money, I think the 'ban' has been lifted... (At least until the next credit card bill comes in... lol)

Well my girlfriend does this thing where she doesn't exist ( no time sadly :/ have to balance IB , music, school, Lego collecting and being a teen) but if I did I'll have to make sure she's fine with legos! And I'll assure her that I'll spend more time on her than I do to madam Lego collection :)
  • omgitsrenzoomgitsrenzo Member Posts: 46
And besides in the past iv used some clever/creative/cute ways to woo a girl before .. I'll probably find a way to incorporate Lego in it!

I feel for you - I can send a good couple of months working on a MOC, and when I finally unveil it, I get similar cutting responses!

If I had children I am sure my wife would be supportive. I hide my lego transactions from her and I keep my sets in my mancave/basement. When she comes downstairs to my play den and sees new lego boxes gradually take over the basement she laughs, but its a wtf kind of laugh.

I just keep telling her that legos always keep their value, she said jokingly that if we get a divorced she would take half my lego collection. I said over my dead body!

    haha.

My wife likes my hobby but she doesn't build. We have agreements as to where it goes (no rude suggestions please). I have a display cabinet in the living room and the loft is mine. The dining room is mine at the moment too as I am building my display for the show in May, so all in all I am lucky!
She has a passion for all things vintage so she buys loads of that type of thing. To be fair she spends a fraction of our budget compared to lego b ut I use the old excuse about sets going up in value, etc.
My two boys don't build (they used to) but they are 15 & 17 and a rule into themselves. Their mantra would appear to be "if you can't plug it in then it's no good". My 11 year old daughter loves to build so it is excellent father/daughter time.
I usually build in the living room while my other half relaxes with her laptop scouring for vintage and perhaps a glass of vino to go along. We find this a lovely way to spend time, both happy, chatting and indulging our passions.
