I wonder if. Maybe. Possibly.....there is no more modular to be had?
You get out of here with your naysaying! 🤪

I believe the line is far too successful to just end with no announcement. But, I don’t really know much of anything. It’s just conjecture.

I love a good leak now and then (OK this bit might have raised an eyebrow or two, but anyway), so with over seventy new comments on this thread, it was long overdue to take another peek and see what has been revealed; only to be slapped in the face by daftness with the most utter nincompoopery of lots of people suddenly all professing in line they dislike leaks. Wow! Just wow.

Anyway much love for DD! As a marital arts freak, a modular with a gym with boxing ring, and boxing bag is just totally smashing! I have just finally bought this set at a nice discount, and it features high on my backlog list of still to build sets.
Curious to know how other people would classify DD in terms of architectural style?
To me it looks like something from the early to mid 20th century, so it is definitely something that would be labelled under one of the many styles belonging to 'Modernism'. There are buildings here in Amsterdam that in some respects remind me a little of it, but to me DD looks very much like something out of Miami, Florida, USA. The colours are even similar to the opening score of the TV-series 'Miami Vice' from the eighties, and well the buildings themselves in Miami of course. Probably would be fun to have a Crocket and Tubs minifig loitering about in front of that set, as well as a "say hello to my little friend" Scarface minifig.

As the next modular I would love a building that looks very Art-Deco, though I suppose asking for a lego set that looks somewhat like the Chrysler building (by architect William Van Alen) in NY is a bit much.
    ps.
    Tadaa! this is post nr.1234!

Honestly, I've been hoping for a while that they would test the waters with some non-standard theme modulars..... They were willing to make TWO D2C Modular-style sets for Ninjago with City and Docks.... and they kinda danced around doing it in the Marvel Superhero line with the Sanctum Sanctorum being a 16 wide full building that CAN be modded pretty easily to fit into a modular city...

But I would like to see them go all out there and give us some BATMAN / GOTHAM themed modulars.... That type of Chrysler / ArtDeco style would work perfectly for that, and it would also open up the door to an Ace Chemicals, Iceberg Lounge, Arkham Asylum, Wayne Tower types of buildings that would both fit into a modular-style city, AND provide some much-needed full-building sets for us superhero fans. :P

^ how many helicopters will there be?

could always turn your spare helicopter on its side to make a moc vestas wind turbine, saving a whopping £160, surely the highest price per part of any creator set (and one that looks like it has the detail of a city set)

Exactly!  While I'm curious what it will be, I will not be buying it until I can get double VIP points or find it at a good discount.  If that means I have to wait, then so be it.  I'm patient and quite frankly have a lot of projects to keep me occupied.

Downtown Diner is a specific subset of Art Deco called Streamline Moderne that was first introduced in the 1930s. Another great example of Streamline Moderne design that has been reproduced in a LEGO set is the Santa Fe Super Chief set from the early 2000s.

It was a very popular style for early diners, many of which set out to imitate the appearance of “streamliner” train cars. Of course, the Downtown Diner is much different than these traditional diners of the 30s and 40s due to being a part of a larger building rather than a prefabricated one-story building.

Anyway much love for DD! As a marital arts freak, a modular with a gym with boxing ring, and boxing bag is just totally smashing!
I feel like there's much more of a marital arts theme in earlier buildings: the newlyweds in Town Hall, the marriage proposal in Parisian Restaurant, and the wedding cake in Assembly Square. :P

Uhm...... Assembly Square is by no stretch one of the "earlier buildings." It's literally the second most recent one we've gotten.... I also wouldn't particularly consider the Parisian Restaurant to be "earlier" since it's still available for purchase now, and was released seven years after Care Corner started this whole thing off....

Feel like you're reaching a bit here. It's like saying there's "baby theme" in the modular line because several of the modular releases included strollers.... humans have an amazing capacity for recognizing patterns, even when there are none to actually be found, or they are insignificant. As always, speculation is fun - but I don't think any of those types of sub-theme type things would be any help in predicting what the next entry might or might not include.

I wasn't saying "earlier buildings" in the sense of dividing the whole Modular Buildings series into groups defined as "earlier" and "later". I was saying it in the in the sense of earlier buildings than the specific building mentioned in the text I quoted (i.e. Downtown Diner).

Anyway I wasn't trying to say there was some intentional, overarching marital theme, I was just goofing on @TheBigLegoski's misspelling of "martial arts".

    @Aanchir
Haha LOL, good one! I had not noticed my spelling mistake. Aah yes the subtle arts of everything related to marital affairs.... wel a gym/dojo can both provide opportunities as well as relief for or from that too.
    Why Miami came to mind:
Granted DD looks quite different. I thought about streamline-moderne too, but DD is not exactly that either. But yeah it has got that incorporated too. That is: the diner part of the building has that streamline look. Also reminds me of this painting: Nighthawks from 1942 (oil on canvas) by Edward Hopper

Ah, my mistake then - someone else earlier in this thread was talking about "through lines" with the music shop/record producing studio, etc indicating maybe we'll get a record store kind of stuff - I assumed (incorrectly it would seem) you were elaborating on his theories.

Not that I would complain about getting a record store in a modular. :P

A lot of rumours on Eurobrick are pointing towards a garage repair of some sort, combined with apartments and other shops. In addition, rumours are pointing towards a larger release this year of around 3000-3500 pieces given the leak of how large the set will be.

That's an unusual marketing choice. Surely Lego would know by now that vehicles in Modulars are not widely appreciated by the AFOL community? I don't mind them, but many do.

Perhaps, but AFOLs aren't just aimed at the "AFOL community". They're also aimed at a more general audience of adults and teens who might not be active in the more organized communities where AFOLs tend to congregate, but still get the LEGO catalogs in their mailbox and every now and then decide to get sets for themselves instead of just for their kids/younger siblings.
And as was proved early on with the massive AFOL backlash to the Fire Brigade (including over the inclusion of a vehicle), the kind of backlash that emerges in AFOL communities after a new modular building is announced isn't necessarily reflective of how well that building actually ends up selling or what kind of reputation it winds up with in the long run.

Firstly, I really like vehicles in modulars, however I have argued that before.

What I will say is that while a garage of some sort is certainly possible (and I for one wont be against it, I would buy it) I very much doubt a large release.

3000-3500 pieces will just be too expensive for anyone to afford (that would be like what, $600 AU?) And whats the reason? For 10 years of modulars maybe (AS took that spot) so I doubt it.

But I do like the idea of returning to 'DO style' modulars as in it has mutiple business in the one building (I know DD technically had three businesses but I mean like DO where it was almost three seperate buildings on the one baseplate)
  • BrickchapBrickchap Member Posts: 1,530
Furthermore, I remember when Legomilk on Eurobricks said the 2016 City Fire Station would be a 'big' fire station with up to 4 vehicles when it turned out to be no larger then any previous ones and had only the normal 2 trucks and a helicopter. The point I'm making is, I wouldn't trust these rumors.

All of the speed champions need some place to be repaired. Though a garage does seem odd, unless it's the downtown parking garage, which would be hilarious to me.

Only problem I have with a garage is that they might include like three vehicles.  I don't mind the vehicles in modulars but I definitely wouldn't want so many of the pieces to go into vehicles.  I want my money to go into the building itself.

Do not visit Eurobricks often, but I walked away from it concluding a lot of bull crap being spouted around in the forums over there. So: 'whatever!' when it comes to anybody echoing what they picked up over there.
Having said that: a building with a grease monkey gearhead hotrod customisation garage inside a building with something else on top of that (apartments, office, pawnshop, massage parlour, catering company with delivery van/truck, a 'screw it' nuts and bolts factory/hardware store, locksmith, sweatshop, super secret gangster hideout, or whatever else...), I say: 'bring it on'. Pretty much every new modular has been a pleasant surprise to me. Just stop making me wait so long for the new reveal!

I personally would love three or more vehicles. It would at least need an old petrol tanker (like in Town Plan 2008) and a tow truck plus some sort of civilian car to repair or fill up with petrol. Maybe they could decide between the tow truck or tanker but yeah, they would have to have at least two.

Considering that there's a 99% chance there will be old cars (probably a 50s car and maybe a more 30s/40s truck) then I wouldn't mind like 10 vehicles, however I completely understand and do somewhat agree about how pieces should for the most part be set aside for the 'structure' build.

The good thing about a garage though is that it doesn't need to be too ornate to get the general idea across and if the upper part (lets just say an apartment) is in a similar style to in DD or DO then it too won't need all that many parts, so hypothetically, we might be able to get a perfectly reasonable build for the actual building plus at least 2 to 3 vehicles all within an average to fair modular price (around $250 AU*)

*Well say $250 US which might equal $270 AU and Lego would make it $350 because of the ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Auxiliary Cost

That part count, again according to rumormill, puts it on the Downtown Diner end of the range between the Diner’s $170 price point and Assembly Square’s $280. So, we’re still possibly looking at $200+, but hopefully not as far as $250. Although, truth be told, no matter what any of it ends up being, I’m ready for them to take my money.

Frankly, a deluxe or D2C garage would make more sense under the CITY or Champions themes.  (Kinda like the Airjitzu Temple or Haunted House sneaking a modular-scale building into their respective themes.)

I'm sure most of these rumours start within the AFOL community and just get regurgitated until multiple 'sources' are vomiting the same nonsense.  I think we've learned for 2018 that LEGO has clamped down on meaningful advance product information.

My sources for information have been shut down for the most part. However, I was told that the 2019 modular has a larger piece count than the 2018 model and that it is not a garage.

Yeah, 2018 has been very different from previous years regarding leaks. We basically have just been getting minifigs smuggled out of the factory and retailers putting sets on shelves early.

With KIRKBI setting up the LEGO Brand Group last year to protect the brand, I wonder if they have something to do with it, or is TLG themselves just getting more effective at shutting down leaks? Has anybody here seen any of this year's cease & desist letters, and can confirm who signed those?
