I prefer the DO. But I'm a fan of the old detective movies on TCM. Saw the detective trying to help the damsel and it was a no brainer.

^ My line of thinking was similar, I enjoy that general theme and the Detective's Office goes with it pretty well. I have both #10243 and #10246 and I find myself fiddling with the latter more often since it feels more uneven and city-like. The Parisian Restaurant looks better from a distance, for sure, but I pretty much built and displayed it and that was that. I greatly prefer sets that offer longevity well after construction.

I think the DO gets some unfair criticism. I totally get people like and don’t like various sets but honestly the DO is just as good as most others. I like the brick facade, I like the passage between the two buildings and generally just like the whole set up as it’s a nice self contained “crime” if you will.

DO has been the only absolutely must have Modular for me. I had no idea it was looked down upon, as it blows all competition out of the water in my eyes. I guess it's because I too love old detective movies.

Someone left a comment on the site saying that besides DO the Brick Bank is also going to be discontinued... Do you think that's possible? Two modulars at the same time?
  • eMJeeNLeMJeeNL Member Posts: 822
DO is going to be axed as per the news page... shame really. I think is it the most playable one, allowing kids into the Modular line the best!

They are just holding them back until midnight Black Friday so they can break their website in dramatic fashion trying to add them back.

OK. That seems to be info from thebrickfan, based on them not being in the catalogue. So not really anything concrete.

    Yeah nothing from Kjeld himself.

Someone on EB is posting that Brickset has confirmed that DO and BB are going to be retired. Can someone here point me to the news article for that, please.

DO will always have a special place in my heart; I only got back into Lego after my very long dark ages in July by buying all the (at the time) new Harry Potter sets... but the DO was the first modular building I ever got a month or so after that ON my very first ever trip to a lego store at a local mall... so it's got double good memories for me. Also I have long-term plans to convert it into an office for Jessica Jones, so... there's that. :P Since then I've purchased all the currently-available Modulars, and I have a Pet Shop on the way from BrickLink, but I think the DO will always be a bit special to me since it (for me at least) started my city off.

I believe they had been reading my musings, where I noted that BB wasn't in the catalogue at all. I didn't state it was definitely retiring.

    Chinese whispers and all that...

^ And that's how rumor turns to fact, by inept readers of people's comments.

I read a rumour that rumours turn into facts due to inept readers.

I've seen some sources that I personally find reputable indicating that BB and DO are gone this uear. Same for Ferris Wheel.
  • SumoLegoSumoLego Member Posts: 15,241
Can I take that to the Bank?

He's still trying to put the Galaxy Explorer back togther; I'm sure he doesn't even know that DO or BB could be retiring.

Neither would I. I have no doubt that they are retiring in the next year or so. Like most other modulars do. Can I give an exact date though?  Of course not. Like all modulars.

    • The 2019 Modular Building is going to have at least a baseplate, four bricks with technic holes and two technic pins.
I heard it would be two smaller baseplates.

I think Baby_Yoda was being sarcastic in 'stating the obvious', however do you mean that 2019 modular could be like Pet Shop? (as a serious rumor)

Personally I would like another set with two seperate buildings. The more variation in builds, the better.

Nice interview!  The Building Boosts are an awesome concept. They spoke a little about them on the LIT this year. Specifically, I do not believe it’s limited to LEGO Designers.  I spoke with a few non-designers that had participated in those boosts. Seems like a company-wide initiative to encourage collaboration and new ideas.  Didn’t seem limited to specific themes, but I could be wrong on that- wouldn’t be shocked if some IPs are more prohibitive than others.

^^ BTW, that link didn’t work for me. I had to go to the home page and re-navigate to the November 2018 issue.

If there was doubt before... Again. Don't wait if you want either of these sets.

I know its a bit of an impossible question, but when you say "dont wait", would you think they'd be completely out of stock before the end of the year?
  • gmonkey76gmonkey76 Member Posts: 1,833
^They could be especially since DO will be part of Black Friday deals. Not sure on BB, but if I had to guess it could be on sale too.

Thanks, I like both but love the DO set more so I'll prioritize that one. Is it just for the US that the DO is part of the Black Friday deals? If its the same here in the UK I'll probably snap it up then.

If you have the funds, I would buy them ASAP. I think there is a high probability they are both gone before the year is over.  Especially in the UK since they added the retiring soon tags. But even in the USA. DO for sure is a risk to wait on since it is part of the upcoming sale.

^Agreed - buy ASAP and no better time than when they are discounted over black friday. Currently in a Lego retail store and both modulars have the "Last chance to buy" tags on them. Back in around 2009 while officially still in my dark ages, I ummed and ahhed for about half a day whether to buy the UCS Millennium Falson at 25% off. Before the day was over it was OOS and I regretted not getting it for about 9 years (when the updated UCS MilF came out).

Someone help with my memory here, but I believe the Town Hall has a similar retiring timeline didn’t it? Was retiring towards the end of the year and I recall not being able to find it after mid-November.

^ I remember the TH going.  I already had it myself, but felt nervous about my TFOL not getting it, so boutght his Xmas present in November.  Still unbuilt...

^If I remember correctly TH retired without notice, and faster than what was normal at the time. I was lucky to find one at retail price a little after it disappeared.

^There was discussion on this very board about it going... I caved early.  Luckily!

Could this mean that we may get two sets - perhaps a rerelease mid 2019 in addition to a modular in january?

If that’s the case LEGO needs to hurry up an announce the new modular.  I love the idea of this however I see it being very unlikely.

I luckily asked for this for my birthday in 2013 so I got the set rather early... I noticed that it retired without a trace... never realized how lucky I was.

I’m not surprised about this if I’m going to be honest... especially the DO it’s the worst modular ever to me. I was a bit shocked that 2 are disappearing in 1 year... that’s odd but the storylines within the sets are a good idea but I feel as though this is what turned AFOLs and TFOLs away from these modulars.

Funny, because PC and DO were the two modulars that sent me down this rabbit hole!

there's a lot of D2C retiring, are they planning to release a ton of them next year?
also, I'm guessing expert creator vehicles are super popular?
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
I think they probably realized they had too many big sets out at the same time and it was cannibalizing sales. But who knows.
