When Harry Met Harry...

Thought it might be fun to post some comparison / evolution pics of the Harry Potter figs. I know they're not the most detailed or well lit but I'm sure you can get the picture. Thanks also @legopants for talking me through the resizer app.

I don't know if it the 'shine' but the plastic on those new CMFs looks really cheap in comparison to 'proper' lego.

I'm not sure if it's because I'm more familiar with them, but apart from Harry and Trelawney,  I think I actually prefer most of the previous figs compared to the new ones.

    Old Dobby is scary.

I deffo prefer the old Luna, but the new Trelawney is certainly an improvement.
I also think the middle Ron looks better than the new one - I think it's the hair.

How odd!  I looked at the pictures first and assumed that it was old on the left and new on the right!

The old Harry Potter hair is terrible, I've always disliked that piece, seeing the comparison just confirms to me that it was awful and I wasn't just being over-judgemental.

I really like the old figures, but I think it’s more of a nostalgic liking... the new ones are so much better. And the newer Ron’s hairpiece does look like him in the third movie! Their hair changes a lot throughout the different years/movies

I think Trelawny is my fav for showing how much better the newer figs are, really hoping for an updated Sprout too as those two never looked right at all to me.

also seeing the side by side comparison like that makes new Dobby look far less odd than I thought.

keep up the good work @LostInTranslation

That's a shame since you put in resizing work Lucy. None of the images are viewable to me. On tablet. Mind you most threads are like that these days. Makes the forum far less colourful.

Anybody fancy doing an "audio description" of the images for me? Technically, just a description.

@lego_star - not quite sure why you can't see the pictures, nobody else has mentioned any issues to me. As I said in my previous comments they're just a snapshot of different figures from the Harry Potter theme.

@BooTheMightyHamster - it's not that I don't like Ron but just picked a representative figure of each character from various waves.

I'll try to take a couple more pics tomorrow.

Fabulous @BooTheMightyHamster, you approached the task with marvellous aplomb. I've only just finished reading Harry so far but I'm looking forward to reading the rest. :o)

In other, more Harry Potter-esque lingo, quoting Ron, "That was bloody brilliant!" :D

That old Dobby figure is creepy. It looks like it came from an old D&D board game or something. I like the newer figures.

Are the two adults supposed to be the same person? I immediately thought of Professors Trelawney and Minerva McGonagall.

They both represent Trelawney. The older (blue) one came in the largest set from the prisoner of Azkaban and she didn’t look great compared to the source material. The new one looks amazing and exactly like the actress’ portrayal of the character!

These comparison photos are very cute. I did not have the privilege of owning Harry Potter lego sets in their earlier iterations but I do enjoy the new sets very much. It is interesting to see the differences even recently for example between the Lego Dimensions figures, which I was able to get a hold of.

Had a lot of fun feeling all of the blind packs to get my set of the new 22 CMFs. Actually if we're being truthful my husband is the wizard with the blind packs. I can sit there for hours and have no clue who is inside.

These pictures are really fun! But I disagree about the new ones being better in the case of this last batch. I can't believe all the love for this new Hagrid! I could be blinded by nostalgia, but I really prefer the old Hagrid design, and will say that the very first face print captured his "beetle black eyes" in a way that no version since has managed. And the new molds make him look like a Playmobile product. I'm also partial to the original Dumbledore from 2001-7, and would definitely take the face print from 2010 over the new one. Probably because I can't unsee the hippie face lurking behind the beard of the new one. New Quirrell is an improvement, but 2010 Voldemort wins for me. He just looks so much more evil! Both new versions are way better than the one from 2005, though, unless we're just judging pure evilness, because then that guy really wins.

This is fun, thanks @LostInTranslation and @BooTheMightyHamster! I never had the old Harry Potter ones so it actually surprised me to see them in yellow - like the early Star Wars sets I have, this theme came just on the cusp of them using natural skin colours for film characters. I suppose part of the issue is that some colours complement the yellow better, some the subtler flesh tones...

I must say I like the old Luna best - those fabric skirts don't always work terribly well, IMO...

I really enjoyed this thread, so I hope no one minds that I breath life into it with some contributions of my own. Hopefully @BooTheMightyHamster will be on the job once more, to translate the images for the hard of seeing :)

The Goblet of Fire faces were just so strange. What's with the half grins?
  • J0rgenJ0rgen Member Posts: 581
Good question, mdtvandy. If anyone has all the Snapes I'd really like to see a comparison of him, 'cause his OotP face is just the worst!

They are noticably... weird to look at.  A very striking design choice.

Meant to post this ages ago, been sitting in draft for donkeys...

@LostInTranslation It's a mystery and not just your pics, or this thread. I found it curious that the resizing hadn't made any difference. The same thing happened that does most times, the pics start to load and then all of a sudden I just have question mark boxes in place of all the pictures.
If you hadn't mentioned resizing, I'd have just moved away to another thread, disappointed I couldn't see the pics. It's not always been like this but I'll admit I'd have trouble pinpointing when it started, because it's been a while. I do know that the "what's your LEGO status?" thread used to be a real joy and now some pictures load but most don't, affecting my enjoyment of the thread (and the forum) somewhat.

It's as if the place marker for last post read in the thread breaks the pictures whilst they are loading. It's bizarre. I've tried not touching the screen at all whilst stuff is loading too. Makes no difference.

I think your idea for this thread is great, so I wanted to join in the discussion even if I couldn't see the pics, hence my comment. Good of you to resize, I know people appreciate it.

Many thanks to @BooTheMightyHampster for his entertaining descriptions which really are as good as being able to see the pictures themselves. :o)

Just found this photo I took when the Harry Potter Dimensions sets came out and figured it was appropriate for this thread...
