Never watched Voltron. But he looks like a sub prime Optimus Prime to me. What came first Voltron or Transformers? Or are they one and the same?

^Pfff they're obviously one and the same.

Jokes aside Peter Cullen, who voiced Optimus Prime since G1, did the narration and other voices in Voltron.

If I somehow can drum up the money, I will totally get this one. I was shocked when I saw that the original project could come apart without rebuilding.

I'm getting this on day 1. I knew it wouldn't have the pilots so I picked up the chinese ones at a comic book store last week. They'll look good together.

It would have been nice if they included the five pilots, six if they included both Lance and Allura but it would have probably raised the price by $20 or so. I'd still would have gotten it though :)

I was never into Transformers or Voltron, as I'm probably (ahem) a bit old for them. It's a very impressive set, but not for me.

With that said, with over 2300 parts, it's going to be pretty imposing and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.

Had this set included the five pilots, it would have been the greatest set of all time.

As it stands now, it’s still going to be my favorite LEGO set of all time :)

My sister wasn't very happy when I showed her this. Apparently the new series is significantly better than the old.

They're both from 1984. I guess you could say Voltron was first, as it's an American bastardisation of 1981's Beast King GoLion, with the violence edited out?

Voltron and Transformers might look similar to you as they're both in the Super Robot genre. (Ancient civilisation/mad scientist created robot with superpowers piloted by teenagers, often including transforming/combining).
By the time these series came out, the 70's Super Robot genre had already become a parody of itself. That has potentially a quality of its own, but I never was a fan.

Not sure yet whether I'll get this set. It looks really good, but even if you know nothing of the Voltron series, it obviously looks like a Super Robot. I much prefer the Real Robot/Mecha genre, like Macross and Gundam (insert 5 million disclaimers here about the "real" and absolutely 100% pinky swear not absurd parts of this genre).
Of course this is probably the closest we'll ever get to an official Lego anime mech, so might get it for that reason alone.

From memory - Voltron and Transformers appeared in the west right around the same time but Voltron was a dub of a Japanese cartoon made a few years  earlier.  Neither were the first transforming robot though...

As a collector of everything Voltron, from my original GoLion Voltron,  the Matty Collector Voltron,  to the newest Legendary defender, I will definitely be picking this up. I will probably end up picking 3 up total,  1 to build and combine, 1 to build into just the lions and one to keep sealed. I really love the improvements that the lego team made from the original design. I really like the re worked legs on the lions and the improvements to waist on the black lion.

Really wasn't planning on spending another $200.  Must resist

I've been on a Lego hiatus for about a year now, but will be returning for this set. I loved Voltron (still do), but never had a proper Voltron toy as a kid.  I spent a lot of time trying to build this guy from my very limited brick selection back in the day and it always ended poorly.  So yeah... this is going to happen Day 1.  I owe it to that 7 year old kid!

Great minds think alike!  I too will be picking up three sets for this exact same reason.

What really guts me though...is why LEGO is not having the set designer doing the box signing at San Diego Comic-Con -- the very epicenter of comics and pop-culture -- instead of Shanghai.  Huh?

And that is not a knock against Shanghai...love the people, city, and food.  But a Voltron signing at Comic-Con would have fit so incredibly perfectly.

That said, I totally respect if Shanghai simply worked better for the set designer, logistically.

Thanks for the link! As I suspected, Voltron is a descendant of the Shogun Warriors. I had several of the Mattel Shogun Warriors from the mid 1970s, both the 5-inch diecast and the 2-foot tall ones, but my attention had shifted to cars around the time Voltron arrived.

And for those transformer fans, definitely take a look at NFLX series' The Toys that Made Us.  Season 2 has an ep on Transformers.  ;)

If nothing else this is certainly true of the animation… classic Voltron’s animation was very low-budget as is typical of many 80s cartoons, while the new series on Netflix is animated by Studio Mir, a Korean animation house whose animators worked on series like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and last year, LEGO Elves: Secrets of Elvendale.

is it because Japanese cartoons (which they most certainly are) are supposed to be considered anime (which they most certainly aren't)?

This is the only Voltron I had. Missed the Soul of Chogokin Voltron previously and decided not to buy the Toynami 30th Anniversary Voltron few months back when it was on sale.

Voltron....so close now. Can not wait to build this the day it launches. I've been excited about getting sets day 1 of their availability but I can't recall wanting to get the set at store opening and wanting to rush home to build it that same day.

I truly hope that LEGO makes a 6 pilot mining blister pack.

if anyone is on the fence about the Dreamworks/Netflix version, it is awesome and worthy of the name "Voltron" (unlike previous reboots).

And honestly if they don’t make one, those eBay customs I linked to above a honestly not bad!

re: the Netflix series...agreed.  It’s amazing in every way – especially when viewed in 4K!

Side question for the group- what have your experiences in the past been like when ordering large sets like this from [email protected], as it pertains to handling and box damage on arrival?

It's impossible to convince some people that a cartoon is, in fact, a cartoon. Anime is Japanese for animation; therefore, the likes of Shrek and Rick and Morty would be known as anime in Japan. I'm just grateful that the people of Brickset are a bit more down-to-earth than some.

Returning back to Voltron news...I found out a piece of very interesting information today.

While the fan designer of the Ideas Voltron set will be doing a signing in Shanghai, the actual LEGO set designer from Denmark will be flown in to do a signing at...*drumroll*...San Diego Comic-Con!

I am beyond thrilled to hear this.

@mattytreks I think the primary issue with non TLG figs is most people  and definitely the purists won't want to pollute their collection with them.

as far as 'big box' [email protected] orders, my own experience (and that which I see most commonly reflected here on the forums) is damage caused by additional smaller sets and GWP's damaging the set during shipping.  Obviously this is exacerbated by the fact that most people wait until there is a GWP promotion to purchase.

Saw the display set in my local store. It looks amazing. The attention to detail on the lions is great and they actually “transform” - you don’t need to rebuild them to make Voltron.

Also, the face isn’t stickers. In fact the only stickers I could easily see were the numbers...

LEGO intentionally made the numbers as stickers, to give the builder the option of representing their build in either format – some iterations of Voltron are depicted with numbers, while others are not.
