2018 Minecraft

FowlerBricksFowlerBricks Member Posts: 1,731
It seems like time to have a 2018 Minecraft thread, so the 2017 Minecraft thread can die in peace. Which of the new sets are you most looking forward to? I'm pretty excited about the new skins in a real set! Maybe Steve and Alex will finally disappear! There are enough Steves and Alexes to last for the next couple hundred years.

    We have been talking about the 2018 sets in the 2017 thread for the last 10 months it will almost be time to start hearing about 2019 sets. I think we should just rename the 2017 thread and carry on there.

    are people still playing Minecraft? my kids seem to have moved on to Robloxs. (I think that is what it's called).

    Roblox has been around much longer than Minecraft. Around 2011 was when Roblox players started to move on to Minecraft. Perhaps the inverse is happening now?
    But yes, the community is still chugging along. Last I heard, 1.13 is upcoming. I stopped around 1.9-ish but I still occasionally play a but of multiplayer when there's nothing else.

    Yes, as you can see in the other thread. Some people move on but others start playing. It is a bit like saying are people still watching Star Wars or are people still playing with LEGO.

    ^ Exactly. It's also one of those things people talk about without actually playing. I was an active member on a Minecraft forum for about a year but I didn't touch the game at all during that time - I just helped people with commands and talked about the good ol' days of beta and all that. Kind of like an inverse Grey Ages here.

    Yup. I definitely still play. There's a massive update coming that will provide a ton of new stuff for Lego to make sets out of, like shipwrecks and dolphins.

    With no news of 2019 sets and with Overwatch coming next year do we think Minecraft is done. I have predicted its demises before and its not one of the themes that gets early leaks so who knows?
  • FowlerBricksFowlerBricks Member Posts: 1,731
    ^Well, the Update Aquatic just recently came out with a ton of now stuff for Lego to make. I say at least one more year. We still haven't gotten a Forest Mansion.

    I can confirm that there are 2019 Minecraft sets. I have no idea what they'll be but I know that at least some will feature 2x4 tiles with printed character faces on them (possibly for some sort of buildable figures???)

    ^ Because doing it yourself takes too much effort.

    Next year is the game's tenth anniversary, so there's an opportunity for something there. A movie was also supposed to come out next year, but the director dropped out and the release date's been pushed back.

    @Lyichir Source?

    Maybe he realized that Minecraft’s lack of story makes it one of the worst choices to make into a film? I mean, there’s not a lot of mainstream popular games that have no solid plot.

    It would be hilarious if this broke the trend of video game movies being sub-par.

    The fact that Minecraft doesn't have a big story fans are attached to might help actually. Most AAA games these days have really complex and compelling stories that take +/- 20 hours to tell. Condensing that into a 1.5 hour movie is (one of) the reason(s) video game adaptions usually suck.

    Unfortunately, even if I wanted to reveal my source, at this point it's no longer even available to me. I had been using a parts database that uploaded a bunch of next year's parts early (including images for many of them), but ever since I shared the source with a few folks on Eurobricks and that information made its way to Instagram, the site in question started forcing a login to access that database. ;_;

    Minecraft is a evergreen theme, and with new fans coming online every day, this'll be a staple theme for some time.  There are 2019 production runs with diverse sets.

    ^I think @SumoLego ment that the game was evergreen, not the LEGO theme. I've never played the game myself, but it's would make sense for LEGO to keep making sets as long as it's profitable for them. Minecraft looks like it was heavily influenced by LEGO when it was being developed.

    Long story short, I believe the licensing agreement between Mojang and LEGO is open-ended, but with a two-year production cycle arbitration/cancellation notice.  The technical term 'evergreen' applies to LEGO-licensed themes, so I suppose there may be a different internal designation.

    For reference, the SW license was renewed in 2012 for a ten-year production run.

    And also not to mention that 'evergreen' is a theme produced until it isn't.  Castle, Pirates, Adventurers, Space...

    Short story short, Lego use the term evergreen to talk about some lines and have not used it to talk about Minecraft.

    Typically, licensing agreements have set termination dates.  Minecraft does not - that was the point.  But maybe I can make a cute fake forum URL for that.

    The initial point being is that LEGO appears to be keeping tighter wraps on future sets, perhaps creating hand-wringing in the AFOL World for those who worry that the theme will be discontinued.  (Which, incidentally, is you!)

    As as noted above, the licensing agreement has no end-date...

    I will say that while my son plays Roblox, and does not play Minecraft a ton anymore, I sat down with him today to look at the Lego site to see what items he is interested in.

    Porg
    Brickheadz (creeper top choice)
    Minecraft
    Ninjago

    were his top lines of interest.

    I tried out a LEGO Roblox project a while back! It got about 7000 supports before being shut down but I think Roblox has a lot of potential and offers a lot more than Minecraft.

    My son has also lost interest in Minecraft and recently taken up Roblox. My giant Minecraft custom build is currently gathering dust (and i haven't even finished it yet) which is unbelievably depressing considering the hours and $ i've put into it.

    Hi Brian, I had a search around, but couldn't see any posted pics of your layout, unfinished or otherwise. I'd be very interested to see what you've done so far, if you're willing to share.
