So what do we hope from this? Are you looking forward more to the sets or the movie itself? Let the predictions commence!

I honestly don't know what to think. I guess I'll just wait and see (without holding my breath for something amazing)

I think it’ll be just fine. Having a five year old, I’ve seen the first movie, as well as the Batman and Ninjago movies a million times now. I’m still not bored of them and find myself laughing at jokes I’ve heard a bunch of times already.

So long as Benny makes another appearance and drags something new, blue and light bluish grey and with a funny little gold planet insignia on it into the real world, I'll be sound as a pound. I'm pretty excited that they're beginning the promotional campaign actually, I feared it was going to get the axe.
I guess we'll start seeing sets in the run up to Christmas.

I'm pumped for the 3+ CMF lines that apparently are required now with every new Lego movie....

Sarcasm aside, there have been exactly zero franchises that have gotten more than two minifigures series so far (not even limiting things to movie franchises). Not that a franchise with three isn’t possible in the long term (I wouldn’t be surprised to see something as popular and broad in scope as Disney reach that number eventually), but it’s hardly a present fear (if it’s something to be feared at all).

Jokes aside though, I'm pretty darn excited for this - whilst I found TLNM kinda disappointing from a writing point of view, it looks like they've taken their time on this one and Lord&Miller are back on scriptwriting duties so I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Simpsons series 2 sat on shelves, same with TLBM thus far.  I'm wondering if the latter is the result of too much focus on variations of Batman and not enough of other characters.

A particular strength of the TLNM line were the misc random city people included in the sets and the CMF series.  (How many people went out a found a sushi chef to add to their Ninjago City?)

Not to derail the thread, but the "3+" was part of the sarcasm as well. I'm aware that there have only been a max of two series for each of the films.

I'm honestly excited for the film.

I think the title should be 'The LEGO Movie 2: It's about time!'

I think as interesting as the original is, its ending hamstrings ideas for a sequel (as obvious by the length of time it has taken to get to a LEGO Movie sequel)

I'm excited......I really do want to see what Emmet and the gang are up to (if you haven't seen the 4D movie you should.....gives us some snippets of how funny they can still be).

It'll be difficult to replicate the success of the first movie, but I thought the combination of humor, story and energy in TLBM and TLNM held up pretty good.

I just think it was too much LEGO in a short period of time.  They're not Disney, Star Wars or Marvel movies.  There's just not the market to support movies every year.

I agree. I'd be good with a quality movie every two or three years and the sets to match.

I expect the gang battling Duplo creatures, then they team up when clone brands come into the picture something. Idk.
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Sofia BG/Dallas TXMember Posts: 5,118
No way they do clone brands. We might appreciate that but we are also a very tiny percentage of people who would even get the joke. If anything, it would convince the masses that every building block really is a Lego.

Yeah, having two movies release in one year was too much.  And it wasn't helped by the fact that Ninjago is extremely niche in the wider market, and would have a hard time pulling adult interest without the benefit of a major tie in like LEGO Batman.  It's a shame, because I thought it was a pretty good movie, and a good representation of the LEGO movie universe aesthetic.  But with each movie getting progressively more niche I'm not surprised.

I think the LEGO Movie 2 is well set up to stop that slide, though.  And I'm really hoping that the writers, directors, and producers are well enough versed in movie history to avoid the worst traps of sequels.  I actually feel like the name is a positive here, as it clearly show's they aren't taking themselves too seriously, and are trying to keep the same slightly off-kilter humor that made the first movie good.

    The Lego Movie 2:

Opening scene: close up of a a hardwood floor, A single piece of LEGO is in the centre. Will Ferrrell steps on it, screams, thrashes out and destroys his entire LEGO city......

The rest of the film is him bagging it all up in ziplock bags and selling it all on eBay while crying!

I'm actually really looking forward to it. Loved the first one, and TLBM. We've not seen TLNM yet.

I found the first one great and the latter two okay, but I only ever watched the first with other non-FOLs who like to talk during movies. Were there any low-key AFOL jokes in there that I missed because I was explaining that the minifigure's legs don't really bend that way?
  • MaffyDMaffyD West YorkshireMember Posts: 2,335

^ You need some new friends :-)

But seriously, the whole segment in the real world was a massive AFOL in-joke

The Man Upstairs: You know the rules, this isn't a toy!

Finn: Um... it kind of is.

The Man Upstairs: No, actually it's a highly sophisticated inter-locking brick system.

Finn: But we bought it at the toy store.

The Man Upstairs: We did, but the way I'm using it makes it an adult thing.

Finn: The box for this one said "Ages 8 to 14"!

The Man Upstairs: That's a suggestion. They have to put that on there.

And of course, following the instructions...
  • MaffyDMaffyD West YorkshireMember Posts: 2,335

Looking forward to the sequel. The rumour mill was in overdrive a while ago about it being a Space movie (capitalised 's' on purpose) which of course I would be a huge fan of (LL-930 ! ! !), but I'm sure there will be more to it than that, if that's even accurate.

If you smile wryly at the pun on the subtitle then you will probably like it...

Having seen the 4D movie today, 100% agree. Emmet and Co are still as funny today as they were in the 1st movie.

Fingers crossed it's as good as the first movie. And if it turns out to be only as good as TLBM or even TLNM, that's OK too.
TLM and TLNM had solid sets; TLBM just seemed to have too many. Hopefully TLM2 sets will be in line with TLM.

I think it would be awesome if we got another "modular" style building for this movie, along the lines of Ninjago City.

I'm pretty excited about the movie. Even if it doesn't live up to the unexpected charm of the others, I'm sure it'll be watchable. What's this 4D movie, though? Is that at the mini theatres at Legoland?

I'm going to take it as a positive that they weren't gritty enough for 'Solo'.

    Emmet shoots first!
  • GeordiePaulGeordiePaul Glastonbury, CT, USAMember Posts: 423
I think Lord & Miller’s more improvisational style of movie making was a little too loose for Kathleen Kennedy’s liking on Solo, but it lends itself perfectly to something like the Lego Movie, especially with Chris Pratt onboard :-)

@Baby_Yoda to add to what MaffyD said Wyldstyle talks about the realms and states bionicle, speed racer, friends and fabuland are a bunch of themes "we don't need to mention"

Hopefully the sequel doesn't turn out to be toy story where they focus on shenanigans in the real world as opposed to keeping their adventures in different brick worlds.

Where does one see the 4D movie?
In one of the Legolands around the world. To be honest I disliked it; came across rather infantile and had little of the charm of the original.
  • GeordiePaulGeordiePaul Glastonbury, CT, USAMember Posts: 423
@iliketoast I saw it at the Lego Discovery Centre in Boston. I assume they have it at other Discovery Centres too. We also saw the Nexo Knights 4D movie, but my five year old wasn’t as impressed with that one.

In case anyone hasn’t seen yet...

    https://brickset.com/article/36490/the-lego-movie-2-the-second-part-poster

There’s been a bit of discussion elsewhere in the forum but it seemed to make sense to have a thread for the movie.

Looks like Unikitty is part Dragon now, Benny looks to have lost an arm at some point but I haven’t seen much mention of the Batman Mad Max looking armour.

Trailer should be up later today so there’ll be plenty to discuss.

Made me laugh how everyone is looking mean, moody and Mad Max'd out, yet Emmett is still wearing his High viz clothing and a smile.

Minidolls? Those aliens better have a combining giant robot. She makes me think of Princess Allura. I still wanna see the battle between regular LEGO and Duplo.

I am looking forward to the line of sets coming from this. Given the high quality and low price points for the first one and the Ninjago movie there ought to be a lot of good stuff in the pipeline.

I am definitely crossing my fingers hoping that TLBM sets were the outlier in terms of number and quality of sets, and that the original TLM and TLNM set numbers/quality is followed for TLM2.  If they are able to not get too greedy and release a billion sets, I definitely think they can keep up the great movie set quality!

Going by the Statue of Liberty in the background...
The trusty crew of Metalbeards Space Cow are sucked through a wormhole.  They find themselves in a strangely familiar world where the local minifig population are enslaved by tall, spindly creatures  with strange heads .

Take your stinking, non rotational claws off me you damn dirty mini doll!
Through a series of adventures including shoulder pads and mutated Unikittys (for reasons) they find that deep down their similarities make them all elements of a shared system, a complex interlocking brick system if you will...

    Cue big reveal...

OH MY MASTER BUILDER! It was Finns basement all along!

Well I was already excited for all the Mad Max style Ninjago figures from this summer and now they are doubling down! Yay!

Also we could be getting minidolls and minifigs in the same set which would be really interesting.
