Oh my! If this had been a U.K. GWP, it would certainly have changed my decision to wait until a discount.
What a brilliant GWP this is!

Has anyone counted out the parts? Just wondered what it would cost me! :)

If you use 1x1 plates, a 48x48 mosaic normally works out about £90-100. That's based on 4-5p per stud, without the baseplate. However, if you go for larger plates then you can normally bring that down significantly. I just placed a rather large order on BL for dark red plates of assorted sizes.

I have made a tiled mosaic before and If it's any help, working in as many 2x2 (7p each) and 1x8 tiles (13p each) as you can manage will greatly reduce the cost (these are current pick a brick prices)
    1x1 6p - 1x2  6p - 1x3 10p - 1x4 12p - 1x6 13p - 2x4 19p
Some colours may have to be ordered through Bricks and Pieces but the pricing on tiles doesn't vary a great deal.
Tiles are also one of the few parts that can quite often be cheaper direct from LEGO as opposed to Bricklink or BrickOwl.

Does anybody know exactly what colors are being used?  Or how to take the number given for the specific color and find that color on Bricklink?
  • The_RancorThe_Rancor Member Posts: 2,523
If this was a GWP with a Hulkbuster I would've gone all the way to my (not so) local Lego Store to secure one!

    48 x 48 = 2,304

Edit: Although, having posted that, you’re probably asking for the part break-down by color... which I have not counted.

A couple of questions for the mosaic experts out there
    Plates or tiles?
Is there a max size you should  consider, presuming sticking a 6x10 plate in there doesn’t look too good?

Thanks, just built it on Mecabricks:
    https://mecabricks.com/en/models/nkOjLwbG2x6

Here are the counts that I got:
    01 (White) - 112
    24 (Bright Yellow) - 241
    106 (Bright Orange) - 387
    21 (Bright Red) - 191
    154 (New dark Red) - 849
    05 (Brick Yellow) - 86
    102 (Medium Blue) - 35
    194 (Med. Stone Grey) - 18
    26 (Black) - 385

Anyone have the cost yet?  Just curious.  Only if it's readily accessible.  I'll probably build a "Want List" on Bricklink just for this.

Quick Bricklink shows a store selling all the parts in Germany, £107. Quite tempted. Thats all 1x1s

I've no problem using larger plates especially for an area like the orange- just background and I've a bunch of 6x6 plates that would do nicely!

I was at the event on 2nd day (Sunday)  around noon time.

Came out from the train station entrance and headed straight for the washroom in the mall (due to urgency). Then quickly rush to the supposed event hall but only find furniture sales there, then went to the 3rd floor Lego shop to ask for directions. Spent a few minutes there.

Finally went down to level one to search again and this time saw the event. And noticed the person right in front of me grabbed the last 2 sets of Hulkbuster that had the free mosaic! :(

Morale of the story? Never ever go washroom! Just rush to the entrance and grab a set and queue and endure after you paid for the item! I went to the washroom and missed the area where the event is held.

I did went back 2 days later to get the Hulkbuster after they restocked for the event, but mosaic all fully redeemed.

All of the AFOLs who fixed up the mosiac and posted at our local AFOL group had prefectly lined studs with the word Lego on one orientation.

I think there are more OCD in AFOLs than any other hobbies. :)

This mosaic is also available in LCS store in Hong Kong. You can get it for free when you spend HKD $1,800 on Marvel + Starswar/Disney set.

Plates not tiles - because: (1) cost, (2) getting the ******* things off again.

As to maximum sizes, not really an issue if you look at it from a distance. Even at close distances bigger plates look OK, so long as they are not aligned too much.

There was a guy in SG selling one on BL, I think it was about £85, plus shipping and probably taxes too on import. So that was maybe underpriced - it sold quite quick.

So if we just used 1x1, 1×2, 1x3 and 1×4 plates how would we work out the most cost efficient plate combination to purchase?
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
There are various software options to do the calculation, if you can get the colours right BL's Mosaick can do it. But you might need to tweak the colours before uploading, as it often gets them wrong and doesn't allow you to restrict the colours to a specific pallette.

Reviving an old thread to show my version of this. I did the original, then mirrored it and then gave the next portion a go by eye only. It looks pretty cool!
