2018 Monthly Building Contest - March: GWP

edited March 2018 in Building and Techniques

I've got the honour to organise another monthly building contest. I love the creator 3 in 1 sets, where you can make different builds with the same bricks, I love MOC'ing, but I also love building from instructions and getting a bang for my buck. There's sites like Rebrickable and apps like BriXtar.

For this contest I'd like to continue in the vein of the recent Brickset/BriXtar one. But this time, I want you to use bricks from a GWP, the gift with purchase. Obviously I'm not aware of any GWP that any shop might have offered at any point, but a good place to start is these 80 sets.

If there are others, feel free to use these too. If there is a polybag in the list that you didn't get as a GWP but used your hard earned cash for, you are still allowed to use it, since it was a GWP for someone else at least.

I'm assuming each of you has at least one GWP, but I know certain people don't like opening theirs, so a digital model is allowed or you are allowed to use your own bricks and make minor colour subsitutions if you don't have a certain brick. However, don't substitute loads because I want to recognise the colours of the original build.

There are poly's with only a couple of pieces, or there are 24 in one builds for Christmas, so I'm sure there must be lots of possibilties there.

Don't be shy in sharing, even if it's your first MOC, this contest is here for fun and to get those creative juices flowing. Also, if your kids want to take part and make one for themselves, feel free to post those too, always great to see what they come up with.

The Rules:

- your model must be built for the contest, not an existing MOC

- only use the pieces from one GWP, extra's are allowed to be incorporated as well

- mention on which GWP it is build

- two photographs per entry only - it helps the thread load better/at all! However feel free to upload any extra images to Flickr etc. that aren't for your entry.

- you can enter as many different models as you like so long as you make a separate post for each

- contest runs till March 31st. I'll announce the winner by October 4th.

The Prize:

A GWP :), I'll try to get you something you don't have, but can't make any promises (don't know how elaborate people's collections are.

Any questions? Anything dubious? PM or leave a message below.

I look very much forward to see what you all come up with.

-- Does it look fun to come up with an idea yourself? Volunteers can speak up here.

I thought the October one was either to avoid people nagging or just to check who was actually paying attention.. :D

Hmm...the wheels are turning now...I think I have only on GWP set...no wait, two, but I have Stud.io too which means plenty of bricks to work with. :)

    GWP?? What's that mean?
  • FowlerBricksFowlerBricks USAMember Posts: 1,626
@TheFew: gift with purchase. The little (or big) sets that Lego gives away with certain purchases.

I'm back with another entry, this time built from the parts of the #30524 Mini Batwing polybag: the micro Batcopter and landing pad! This build uses about 50% of the pieces. Ignore the clear pole. It's just support material. More pictures can be found in this gallery

Just wanted to ask a question before I begin building. Are Brickmaster polys allowed? They technically could be considered GWPs since they came with magazines, but I want to be on the safe side.

    @TheLegoMaster35 Go for it.
  • TheLegoMaster35TheLegoMaster35 OH, USAMember Posts: 254
@snowhitie good, because half of my entries are Brickmasters!

The first one is based off of #20013 and used about 80% of the total parts.

The second, is from #20017. Has a feature, when you pull the pin, the dagger stand knocks a boulder down

Here’s a cherry picker from #20008. And yes, the tap piece with the cheese wedge is supposed to represent a person in the basket.

Don’t worry, only a few more left...

This one is built from Batman in the Phantom Zone. It’s a mini(not really) drone along with a controller

Bat Bomber from #30524. Bombs are easily removable and both pairs of engines can be angled for landing/takeoff.

I've been trying to get my creative juices flowing. Just built this model. I think the idea is (what would be) a Lego brick-built red minifigure exhibition at a shopping mall or an event. Pieces used are from the Exclusive VIP set. It's been fun building!

Do #30377 and #30226 count as GWP?
  • snowhitiesnowhitie BelgiumMember Posts: 2,859
^ first one was apparantly a gift in Belgium, so definitly okay, other one should be okay too.
  • FowlerBricksFowlerBricks USAMember Posts: 1,626
Great! I may try and rebuild one of them.

Here's a semi-last minute entry. I can't think of a good name for it, so I'm just going to call it The Swooshable Thing since it has very high levels of swooshability. It uses about 80% of the parts and was built from #30377. More pictures can be found in this gallery.

    It is time for judgement…

Great to see the different entries and how everyone has got their own twist on things.

@fowlerbricks I like the idea of the Rolls Royce model, I’m not familiar with that particular kind but looked good. I think your fire truck was even better though. The micro batcopter and landing pad are well done too, especially like the landing pad as extra. Your swooshable nexo-knight entry looks like something the knights would enjoy using in Knightonia, fits with their style.

@lego_minon I really like the dragonfly, it’s a very colourful model and I’m really impressed with yow you only used a pretty small model to come up with something totally different. It’s nice to see the cartoon flower accompanying it as well.

@theoriginalsimonB I’ve got a soft spot for that light blue colour and love both of your colourful models. Especially like robohead, he oozes personality.

@shib, with only a small amount of pieces and something as specialised as a spaceship, it is as you said very difficult to make it into something different. Like the mech you managed to come up with though and great you managed to reuse all the pieces.

@Bumblepants the freighter airship would look nice in any space saga!

@thelegomaster35 the first entry is a pretty sleep spaceship, but I like your second one better and like how you managed to get a play feature in there. You were going from strength to strength with that cherry picker, immediately recognisable and a lot of detail for such a small model.  You then also used the London bus and it was cool to see how you made it into a single level bus but with a bus stop as well! The batman drone reminds me a bit of a Milano in some ways, I’m sure it would come in handy for surveillance for the black knight. With your bomber you managed to incorporate another play feature. The garbage truck seemed a bit similar to the original model although the rear was definilty improved.

@mssanders I like how you redone the VIP set, I think it would look good in any mall, maybe kids could try and hit the belly with coconuts or something

    But...who won?
  • snowhitiesnowhitie BelgiumMember Posts: 2,859
Ah oops, I typed the comments in word and then pasted them. I'd put in a smiley and the forum read that as a break. So the last part of my message hadn't appeared.

    Here it is:

@brickbybrick I applaud your creativity. That was really original and you made me smile. Very impressed with your origami skills and how you actually managed to make it look like a MF! I did say you could use any GWP, so it was definilty within the rules and no contest was broken. Thanks for showing a grey picture too, it showed clearer what it looked like.

Now for the winner, I think I’m going to select @lego_minon, that model is just very eye-catching. I’ll be checking out what you own and send you a PM to get your details.

Thanks all for taking part, look forward to see what you come up with for Apri

Eeek I think that's me?? Although I have 2 underscores in my name so any PMs, if sent, may have gone astray :D

Thank you so much for hosting, these competitions are an excellent way to get you thinking outside the box and using Lego in different ways. :)

Thank you @TheOriginalSimonB Sorry for confusing you with a name change. Hopefully going forward it will stop any mis-tagging :) That London bus is pretty awesome, I wish they still had that old charm about them, today's buses are ugly compared to those beauties. :)
