Reflecting on delay of #21038 Las Vegas Skyline

tomalphintomalphin Member Posts: 250
It has been interesting to watch how the LEGO Group has responded to the recent tragic mass shooting event in Las Vegas.  First, the much leaked set was not announced alongside #21039 Shanghai, then we heard a few weeks ago that it would be released at the end of January, then an official photos was released, and finally Promobricks learned that it was being re-designed and delayed until this fall.

What surprises me a little is how uncoordinated their response has been.  A complete cancellation of the set seemed like the easiest course of action, but for some reason they allowed it to be announced, only to change their mind a week later.  I suspect it has been difficult for the Danish company to understand the complex political tapestry in the USA, which has unusual gun laws for a developed nation, and tragedies keep happening.  Further, we are also just learning about sexual misconduct allegations against Steve Wynn, so maybe that building would be removed as well?

What will replace Mandalay Bay in the revised model?

In any event, I'm curious to hear which building or buildings people think will replace the Mandalay Bay, and possibly Wynn?  I prepared an in-depth look at this very topic, along with additional analysis of the reasons for the delay at - Let me know what you think!

Probably best if we close this. Gun laws, and sexual misconduct discussions will not end well. @Huw @drdavewatford @CapnRex101

It's only a problem if you believe the propaganda. I'm building this set whether they release it or not. It's a cool Lego set.

Can we still, please, get the new metallic gold pieces though?

Couldn't agree with you anymore.  However, suspect thread to be locked soon.

I have mixed feelings about Las Vegas. On the one hand I was married there, so I will have a lifelong connection to the city. On the other hand it is an example of much of what is wrong with the world. There is fabulous luxury and wealth mixed with desperation and hardship.
I don't think there is a single building in Las Vegas without some type of sordid history you could associate with it. Trying to name a place that hasn't been involved with organized crime, gambling, alcohol/drug use, white tiger exploitation, adult entertainment, fear and loathing, Wayne Newton, Circe de Sole, or all you can eat buffets- is basically impossible. It is known as Sin City for a reason and I won't be surprised if the set is simply canceled.
     But if it isn't...
Excalibur,  Bellagio, Caesars Palace, The four Queens, or the Little White Chapel would be my choices.

^ Yeah, I'm surprised Lego even chose to do Vegas. They stay away from gambling, promiscuity and other adult themes but chose a city notorious for them.

So sick of this needing to be a G RATED world we are all adults no one is forcing you to buy the set if you dont like it dont buy it

I agree with them pulling it for now. And if they go ahead with it replacing the building, also fine.

It is going to be pretty offensive for a toy company to bring out a toy of the location of a mass shooting. But even worse, it is current. There is an ongoing court case against the hotel, and also an investigation. It is quite offensive to the families and victims for LEGO to make a toy featuring it. This is different to photos or postcards or similar, it is a play thing.

If LEGO bring out the set, it is fairly obvious that it will be linked to news stories about the shootings and thus give LEGO bad press.

Replace it with the Pawn Stars store. But what about the MGM Grand though? That's the one with the fountains yeah?

If I were LEGO, I would just cancel it. Vegas is a great place to visit at least once, and I love the set, but there is just too much emotion and controversy tied to the city. Especially right now. People get triggered so easily these days, and I don't think social-media outcry and bad press is something LEGO is looking forward to deal with. Just let it go, and build another city.

What strikes me is that clearly no licensing rights were secured to any of Caesar's Entertainment Casinos.  (Just in case you don't know - MGM and Caesars each own a bunch of the more notable casinos on the Strip.  It's work looking up on Wikipedia.)

I'm not sure you can really have a Las Vegas skyline without the Bellagio, Caesar's Palace and the Venetian.  And there any any number of other casinos that are more visually interesting.  (Flamingo, Excalibur, Paris, New York, New York...)

Not that I don't like the Wynn, but it's a brown blob on a street of buildings with much more interesting (and iconic) architecture.

I'd have a biker jumping the Caesar fountains.....but then again, "he" did time in prison....and crashed at the end of the jump

Oh, forget it, lets just go back to pirates, they did nothing wrong :)

Only thing about Paris, Venetian or NYNY is they sorta have been done withing "their" own city skyline sets.  Even the new high roller ferris wheel that towers near the strip has been done within the London set....and plus its just a glorified bar anyway.  TI with pirate ship...done, too...Excalibur, castle...I think castles have been done.  Maybe an empty lot with a construction crane.....that might be pc enough

But for all the debate on whether Las Vegas is too adult in theme, remember Lego Land has an entire Las Vegas strip in mini land....I've never heard complaints about that.

It’s totally tragic all around. I am sure TLG is actively discussing this behind the scenes ensuring the financial value to release this even exists.

Perhaps they could donate X% of sales to a fund for the survivors. That would be a great thing.

I wonder if they even considered that. Could have been a good way to turn any inherent bad press around.

But then the loud and offended minority will say Lego is using the "percentage goes to victims" method as a ploy to get even more sales, effectively profiting off the shooting.

So really no matter what, bad press is inevitable.

I don't really see any bad press about the continued entertainment activities currently occurring in Las Vegas.  People continue to vacation in Las Vegas and stay at Mandalay Bay.

I can certainly understand removing Mandalay Bay from an adult-geared toy because of the timing, but other than that - there's a multi-billion dollar industry that continues on!

Looks like the new version of this set hit the image server....

I have to say it does look much better with the Bellagio.  (Although the Bellagio is further north than the Luxor, so that's a bit odd.

The Wynn is still a brown blob.  Either Caesars, the Flamingo (pink would be nice variation on the colors in the set), the Venetian, or Treasure Island would have been a better choice.  The Stratosphere is more of a gimmick.

I might mod the Venetian in, if I can muster up the imagination. Mainly because I've visited. Yeah. I've set my sights pretty low these days!
