Getting started with Technic

I've been building with Lego for years, and I've been an AFOL for around a decade - but in all of that time, I've never really looked at Technic.  Now I'm interested in adding motion to my builds to make my displays more dynamic, and I was looking for any advice on getting started.

For instance, are there any books or guides that people have found useful in explaining building gear mechanisms, or specific sets which helped you to get to grips with adding movement?
