I keep changing my mind on whether to keep my older harry potter sets or just sell them.  Figured once the new stuff came along they'd all plummet in price so would just hang onto them, but seems never realised the Knight Bus went for so much.  Expert that'll maybe change if a new version comes out.
I'd sell it now, before the rumour of the re-release gets well known.

The new one is likely to be better and cheaper. That will hit the volume of sales for the old one, even if not the price.

Another possibility is that the FB line will only be released to coincide with the films, at the moment.
I think this is the more sensible assumption.

Fantastic Beasts isn't that popular. I've seen a lot of Grindelwald's Escape filling up shelves, and seeing as the new film was neither well received nor kid friendly, I don't see them making a lot more. They're not very LEGO friendly either, for that matter, as you'd be hard pressed to think of anything from the new film to base a set on. Maybe the circus.

In our family certainly, the first FB film was very well received, not so much the second one and I think this is pretty much the general opinion. It hasn't been as popular. I'd also be surprised if anything was released based on the second film, unless it was already planned before the film came out.
I thought Newt's suitcase was a really nice set. Grindelwald's Escape is a somewhat pointless set in it's own right, but for anyone making a decent sized Hogwarts display it does have an excellent Thestral figure which happily goes with a Hogwarts model, as does the coach with a little tinkering. Second year students and above all arrived by coach pulled by a Thestral if memory serves me correctly.
I could see the Thestral, particularly, and possibly the coach becoming quite sought after at some point, unless Lego release the Thestral and/or coach in one of the upcoming HP sets. I suspect at some point you will be able to get the set for 50% off fairly widely which is very cheap for what you get, especially if you don't want the minifigs. They sold surprisingly well from the two sets I have.

If these rumours are true, and the Harry Potter line will be continuing with new sets each summer, next year's HP sets might be based on books 5 and 6 and it's possible the Thestral figure will be reused for future sets based on these books/movies!
I'm hoping this theme will continue the high standard of the first new sets and that it may continue doing so for the next couple of years!
I've heard a rumour about a large Diagon Alley for the summer as well, would be lovely.

Well, that's a bit disheartening. I've really enjoyed the FB films. It was the existence of the FB sets that interested me in the WW products at all. I was rather looking forward to more sets focused on that era. I think the darker subtexts and departure from children as the protagonists was what reeled me in (I never really took to the original HP stuff, tbh). I can see how it might not translate into toy sales though.

I do really like the FB sets and figures that we got last year though! I suppose if Lego decides to never revisit the FB stuff, I'm more or less content. I can always track down the Dimensions stuff for new 'fix'. :D

Which tower at Hogwarts is the watchtower? Is that the one in which Sirius was kept at the end of the third book?
  • J0rgenJ0rgen Member Posts: 577
I thought «watch tower» was a bad translation of «clock tower» and that it meant the entrance with the pendulum from Azkaban. If it is indeed a watchtower, then it's probably the tower where Sirius is kept.
  • LegolisLegolis Member Posts: 248
I'd presumed it meant the astronomy tower. Is that the same as the tower that has the clock? I need to look at a map...

    Imagine this;

    Benny's Space Squad

But with a generic member of each of the four houses, a cauldron-over-a-fire build, and a bookshelf build.

    9.99 Euros/7.99 Pounds/9.99 US Dollars

I expect my cheque in the mail, LEGO.

I'm sure we won't get the astronomy tower this wave. The new sets are all based on Azkaban and Goblet and the astronomy tower is only featured in the sixth film.
  • J0rgenJ0rgen Member Posts: 577
Speculation time: Nothing like set names to get the imagination flowing. Here are my thoughts on what the new HP sets could be:

Expecto Patronum! - Scenario 1: Harry, Sirius and dementor, maybe a white stag for the titular patronus, based on the scene where the dementors converge upon Harry and Sirius. It might only include Harry and a dementor if Sirius is in another set. Should be 15-30$ Scenario 2: Harry, Lupin and a dementor. If the "watchtower" set turns out to be the tower where Sirius is kept, then Expecto Patronum! might be a cheap way to get Lupin and a dementor from when Harry is learning the spell instead. Should be 10-15$

The Knight Bus - Harry, Stan Shunpike and maybe Tom the barman from the Leaky Cauldron. Also Sirius as a dog like in the original set (although with an updated mould). Other possible figs are uncle Vernon or aunt Marge. I expect another Knight Bus, and maybe some playground side build.

Hagrid's Hut - This set is obviously going to include Hagrid, and could also have Harry, Ron and Hermione in their muggle clothes from the end of the third film. It might not feature the whole trio, but I would expect it to at least have Ron, as it's the only set I think he could be in. It could also come with Malfoy in school robes, Cornelius Fudge or Dumbledore. I expect it to be based on the Azkaban and forwards version of the hut and feature Buckbeak and some sort of pumpkin patch.

Hogwarts Watchtower - Scenario 1: This title is a mistranslation of "Hogwarts Clocktower" and refers to the entrance with the pendulum featured heavily in Prisoner of Azkaban. If it is, then this set can include a lot of relevant characters like Hogwarts Great Hall did last year. I'm hoping it will include the hospital wing at the top, like in the film, and that Madame Pomfrey will be in the set. Scenario 2: It refers to the tall tower where Sirius is kept at the end of Azkaban and will feature Harry, Sirius, Buckbeak, and maybe Hermione or a dementor. Unlike the original set based on this scene, I expect this set to have an interior.

Tri-wizard Task - I've seen speculation that this could feature all three Tri-Wizard tasks, but I expect it to be based on just the first task, and feature Harry, the horntail, as well as a few relevant minifigs, among them Rita Skeeter.

I don't think any part of hogwarts is called watchtower, but I think the clock tower is probably what is meant. It is the most recognizable tower of hogwarts apart from the grand staircase tower and the astronomy tower. The dark tower (where Sirius is kept) would be a pretty weird choice, because the only scene that happens in that tower is sirius's escape. It also only appears in the third movie (not even the book!) and no interior is associated with it.
  • Baby_YodaBaby_Yoda Member Posts: 1,295
On the other hand, the sets are based on the films, not the books, since the latter doesn't provide a shred of visual reference. Also, I think Lego like to produce sets based on events first and foremost for the sake of action - it's why the Hogwarts Express comes with a Dementor, for example. Sirius Black's rescue is supposed to be a significant and climactic scene, which probably takes precedent. Lego released three sets last year alone that depicted Hogwarts, so I don't think they're going to do it a fourth time.
  • J0rgenJ0rgen Member Posts: 577
I don't think another part of Hogwarts is unlikely. Apart from the Goblet of Fire wave they have always released several parts of Hogwarts at once. I think the pendulum entrance is different enough from the sets released last summer to come out this year. I think this entrance is one of the most iconic parts of the castle, and if they're doing 5/6 in 2020 I expect them to do the astronomy tower then, so it would make sense to do the pendulum entrance this year.

Surely the Knight Bus should come with Ernie the driver as well?

A Harry Potter advent calendar would make so much sense as, unlike Star Wars, it's actually closely assiciated with Christmas by a lot of people. I think I might actually try to avoid seeing what's inside this before buying it.

Expecto Patronum and the Knight Bus, Azkaban. Tri-wizard Challenge is Goblet of Fire. Hagrid's Hut and the Watch Tower appear numerous times. Though, in the movie, Hagrid's Hut changes appearance after book two and has sets from movie Philosopher's Stone and Azkaban.

All I need now is a Shrieking Shack or something else from Hogsmeade (first seen in Azkaban)

Fig parts from a most likely up to now secret set is leaked! The yule ball torso of Fluer and Harry ;)

According to rumors over at EB, we will get:

Expecto Patronum including a new stag mould
Tri-wizard Challenge including a hungarian horntail with some moulded parts
Hagrid’s Hut with a new buckbeak mould and most likely a Fang (new mould?)

Not bad at all if that is true :D

Remember to take those rumours with a pinch of salt. A new member at Eurobricks (although says he is a regular member, but just set up a fake account to share his info) who wanted people to PM him for details about what he knows.

He also claimed initially that information was from a friend and didn't want the friend knowing, but now claims to have been at the London toy fair, a fair that predated his initial posts aboue getting information from a friend.

From a credible source or not, they all sound probable. I was expecting all these things anyway. Except for Fang. I won't allow myself to hope for Fang before I see him with my own eyes.
  • Mr_CrossMr_Cross Member Posts: 1,672
^ I can see how Fang and Sirius (as a dog) could be done with the same mould. Although they're both black dogs. I don't know to what extent a slightly bigger dog (than the ones we have) could or would fit the system.
  • J0rgenJ0rgen Member Posts: 577
Ranking the possible new moulded animals from most to least likely:

    1. Buckbeak
    2. Horntail (new head and tail for Smaug's body maybe?)
    3. Sirius as dog
    4. Stag
    5. Fang

I am sure they can make new moulds for one or both, but they will not use the same on both, since it is not the same breed of dog.. They have a fresh mould budget this wave and already made stuff like wands, sorting hat etc last year, so would not be surprised if we get several new animals this year ;)
  • BrickByBrickBrickByBrick Member Posts: 743
Last year they did steal from Jurassic World's new parts budget so to keep at the same level of new molds they'd likely need to do the same thing.

Well since the Baryonyx has velociraptor feet, maybe they did :P
The theme could also have a higher mould budget this wave?

Buckbeak and the patronus stag have leaked! Looks amazing from what I can see :D

  • J0rgenJ0rgen Member Posts: 577
Like last year's thestral they look very toy-y... They've kind of lost that LEGO feel, although Buckbeak looks alright. Interesting that he's not more advanced than the 2004 version, I expected movable hips like on a horse. Also interesting that the stag is just one piece and that it has a hole for a minifig on the back.
