On the instagram link, is that a new Ugnaught that I see, also?
  • the_creative_boxthe_creative_box Member Posts: 90
^Yes, it is! I think that figure pretty much confirms a UCS Cloud City, unless Lego is planning to release a Cloud Car *and* another cloud city play set, which I personally doubt.

Ugh. Those figs are certainly a turn-off...the set will have to be really good to make up for it. Please have Han with flight jacket and Chewie with C-3PO!

There is a video on YouTube that shows "all Fall 2018 SW Sets," and has several photos of what is supposedly a UCS Cloud City set.  However, it is the only set that doesn't include box artwork, or catalog-type posed shots of the set.  No minifigures are shown. I know the policy here forbids posting photos of unreleased items, but I'm really not convinced that this is the real thing.  I'm not even sure I'm allowed to link to the video here, but if you want to pull it up yourself, the title is:

ALL LEGO STAR WARS FALL 2018 SETS in HD !!!

He says something like this in the video, "I hoping it's going to be like VAkkron's LEGO Ideas project as shown here", so no it's not the real thing, it's this:

I agree with @Redbullgivesuwind that the Death Star is a boring set.  It takes up way too much space and all those gray pieces to give it structure.  I can see why kids and others like it, but it's not for me.  So I'm hoping the UCS Cloud City isn't designed like that.  I like the look of the original a lot better.

    Thx for the info @samtheq

It should be of modular design, 1 section per year.

I feel like the drawback to a strategy like this is that as far as Cloud City is concerned, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. There are a few key scenes that would have great appeal, but also many in-between scenes that would not be as impressive when removed from the overall context of the rest of the City.

You can always start off with bumper set with 2 or 3 to start with.
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,268
No it's nothing like the ideas set at all.

I posted some details about it earlier in the thread.

Eh, but you'd have to keep them, and all the other modules, on the market for the entire duration of the project, because inevitably you'd have people starting half-way through and going nuts if they couldn't get it all. You'd have to keep the hype going year after year, even when you have rather dull modules that year (Luke peeking 'round a corner, anyone?). It would be a massive committment in terms of shelf space in shops, ongoing publicity, continued development, etc, for something that might prove to be a flop by year two, after your 2 or 3 module bumper set. But you wouldn't be able to drop it because you've already committed, and pulling out would raise a stink and then some.

Even if you could get enough of a buzz the first year, it would still be a massive gamble. Sometimes, gambles do pay off and then some - last year's MF was way more popular than the quantity initially produced would indicate they predicted, and more people bought it than someone reading the many "nice, but to pricey" comments on the thread on this forum would think. But this is a gamble they could still be paying five, ten years down the line.

Now I think about it, don't they need to renew the SW licence in a few years? Imagine if they lost it halfway through a modula project...

I really don't understand why we haven't seen more Cloud City sets from Lego? The most iconic scene in Star Wars (arguably cinema history) happened at Cloud City. You meet Lando and Boba Fett for the first time. Leia tells Han she loves him. Han gets frozen in carbonite and and epic light saber battle. You spend practically 45% of the entire movie in Cloud City, from the time the Falcon gets shot at by the Cloud Car to when Lando rescues Luke.

Probably because of the lack of vehicles more than anything.

And isn't there some fan-hate for ESB?

That wouldn't explain all the Hoth kits. Hmm.
  • Baby_YodaBaby_Yoda Member Posts: 1,295
The only sub-group of Star Wars fans that would have anything against Episode V that I can think of is the recently emerged online "fandom" for the Sequel Trilogy. You know those sites where young teens would write weird and creepy fan-fictions about Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga? They've turned to Star Wars, and they apparently prefer the likes of The Last Jedi to The Empire Strikes Back.

I figure a $30 Bespin duel set would be a good pairing for the Carbon Freeze chamber. Bespin Luke, Vader, Lando (though it'd likely a Stormtrooper or R2 or something).

I'm definitely looking forward to a UCS Cloud City, but I have nowhere to put it.

@oldtodd33 Apparently you've fallen into the Mandella Effect trap of repeating the most misquoted line in cinematic history.  Watch it again: Vader never says "Luke I am your father." It's "No. I am your father." Sorry if I'm nitpicky.
Yes, I know but I don't mind you being nit picky. I even said it right in my head but repeated it because everyone else says it wrong too. By the way, nit picky is two words:)

While I am happy to accept that I am wrong about there being fan-hate for ESB, I am still fairly sure I saw it being mentioned in relation to middle-of-trilogy-movie problems.

BTW, I do like ESB. I just prefer the PT to the OT, because they're the ones released during my childhood.

^It's to do with the memory associations. I remember doing a creative writing thing in class in primary school with a set of storyboards from AotC and that was my first introduction to Star Wars, seeing RotS in the cinema for my twelfth birthday, being scared to watch TPM because of the creepy music (overheard Duel of the Fates one time). I don't have the same connection to the OT, or the ST, or any of the others. I like them all, but the PT has that special place in my heart.

It wasn't part of the curriculum. The teacher had a set of boards with a still and brief summary from each scene of AotC, and she showed us the first four, and we had to write what come next. As I recall, the story was cut off just as the poisonous bugs were put in Padme's bedroom, and I wrote that Jar Jar ate them.

Also, I lved in England at that time.

Yeah, it’s not the only occurrence. We were shown the Rancor scene from RotJ in an English lesson and asked to write an essay describing it.

It was actually my first exposure to Star Wars, so I’m eternally grateful for it, though my wallet isn’t!

At my high school (and many at that in The Netherlands) "Blackadder - Corporal Punishment" was actually part of the English-Curriculum. :)

Not that I hadn't seen that episode many times before, but I still laughed my ass of. Some of my less-talented-in-English classmates were stumped, though.

Any particular reason why Coporal Punishment and not one of the others? Admittedly, it does have one notably brilliant line from George: "Oh my head. It feels like the time I got initiated into the Silly Buggers Society. I misheard the instructions and shoved a whole aubergine in my ear." I never quite worked out what he was meant to do with it that he misheard...
