Fact: Next (not) UCS set to be Cloud City

So according to Mandrproductions on YouTube the next UCS set is going to be Cloud City, and will retail for $500. According to his source this is maybe a replacement for the Death Star and will be a large play set. In the video he then goes on about the various potential options.

Personally if this is the case and the next UCS will be another play set I am very happy to skip it and save my money. The Death Star didn’t and hasn’t interested me and it is just an expensive regular set.

What at do you guys think? Is this great news as they are doing something fans have wanted for a while? Or is this a swing and a miss?

The price points are ridiculous anyway.   I'd love a chance at a cloud city, but certainly not at the price we have come to expect from these things.    I think a Cloud City lends itself naturally to being both a display and a play set.  But then again, I thought the same thing about the Classic Bat Cave, and was I ever wrong

I really really hope it's a playset so I'll have a reason to completely avoid it.

Just remember Insult on Hoth. While I'd love to see a proper Cloud City I'm not confident the designers can pull it off. Main question is will they include Lando's space cape collection?

I would honestly be pretty surprised to see it replace the Death Star outright, given how recently that set was redesigned/rereleased. A new Cloud City is certainly overdue, though, and would love to see what they could do with it given over a decade of improved parts and techniques.

Yeah I would expect they sell it alongside the death star if it turns out to be true. I also would bet on the death star outlasting it long term.

Boy does this feel like it could be an assault on hoth situation. A million small areas with no real body to it.

'Here's where Luke Hangs' and 'The landing pad' and 'Carbonite Chamber' and have it just be a mess of small nothings.

What Cloud City really needs (deserves) is to just keep doing sets about the size of last years Carbonite Freezing Chamber. That was a fantastic little size/price, so more of those individually to make Cloud City rather than a huge set would be ideal.

I have the original, definitely overdue a rerelease but I don't know about a Death Star replacement. I can see it needing to be a similar scale and approach to do it justice. Interesting thought whether it's real or not.

Seems like it would replace Assault on Hoth, not the Death Star. Color me excited. And hey, they can swap out minifigs and re-release Hoth as “Defense of Crait”.

He tends to be fairly reliable when it comes to rumours. So I think it is although I couldn’t say when.Although, there is also the Star Destroyer that people think is coming.

I agree this would need to be a complete play set and not like Assult on Hoth just a group of things.

Gotta disagree there. I doubt we'd see sections like, say, the dining room where Han and Leia encounter Vader if the components were sold as separate modules, simply because they'd be less popular when separated from the more "action-y" scenes. It's the same way that areas like Leia's cellblock or the trash compactor work better as part of the large Death Star set than they would as individual playsets.

It certainly remains to be seen whether they can turn Cloud City into something as cohesive as the Death Star, given its more limited screen time and less regular shape. But at the very least, I imagine they can do a heck of a lot better than the original Cloud City set.

I also think that the Death star will not retire and that cloud city will replace the Hoth mess.
And the ISD will replace the Tie fighter or Slave I.

I assume this rumour relates to 'CONFIDENTIAL_DTC CC –75222'?

'CC' - I'm thinking 'Cash Cow' or perhaps I'm just getting cynical in my old age!

But, a Cloud City or new Star Destroyer would be very nice, indeed :-)

I can't imagine that the next UCS will be released anytime soon. Surely all the UCS lovers just all spent a ton of cash on the Falcon. (or are waiting to spend a ton of cash on the Falcon when they can actually get one,)

The Death Star has been a staple of the LEGO lineup for a decade. While il sure we will continue to see refreshes, I think we will conotinue to see it for a long, long time.

$500? Eh. The Death Star costs $500 in the US, whereas in Sweden it costs 5499 SEK, which equates $670. A $250 price tag would have been more justified in my opinion, due to the release of the $1000 Falcon.

Didn’t they verify somewhere that it actually was an ice cream maker he was carrying?

They even made an action figure of him at one point. It’s definitely time for a minifig version. Long live Willrow Hood!

Perhaps much like the Death Star with a circular shape and perhaps two floors with vignettes to play in.

My LEGO store employee this morning seemed to pretty firmly believe that a new UCS Star Destroyer of some kind would be the spring UCS release, and the fall set would be CC... That wouldn't surprise me much, since the SD rumors have been around for months at this point, and the CC ones just surfaced in the last several days, but has anyone else heard anything similar, or is the general assumption now that the CC set will be the spring release?
  • ucsstarwarsfanucsstarwarsfan Member Posts: 33
Why would it be Cloud City? In fall 2016 the Death Star box had the Falcon silhouette on it with the glowing light behind it, and in fall 2017 the Falcon was released, with a silhouette of the Imperial Star Destroyer on it with the same glowing light behind it. Fall 2018 is rumored to be an expensive set ($600 range?), so why wouldn't it be the long overdue upgrade of the 2002 Imperial Star Destroyer?

Could well be the Autumn/Fall release for ISD (hope so), but we usually have a release around May 4th too - I wonder what that will be if not the ISD or Cloud City. I'd be happy with a new Tantative IV for May 4th.

Yeah the ISD wouldn't be in May, it would follow the same pattern as it did from the Death Star to the Falcon, large fall releases. But people have been saying that the large fall set is Cloud City, and I just don't see why it wouldn't be the ISD.

I think Hoth was a May release.  A larger Cloud City playset would fit for May.  (Because the Ewok Village was finally retired...)

I think that the consensus among most of the groups that I talk with as time has gone by is that the expensive CC set will be the end of summer/fall UCS release, and the $200 set will be the spring UCS release.  Also, since the ONLY backing we have for a Cloud City set is that the leaked set/price listing said 'SW UCS CC' on it, many people have started backing away from the idea that it's actually a Cloud City set.  On an informal head count, I don't think ANYONE I've been talking to recently puts Cloud City as the most likely.  Most think it will be a newer, better ISD, and the follow up thought it not an ISD... But also not Cloud City.

For the $200 set, I actually haven't even seen any solid rumors.  There were y-wing rumors for a little bit, but there was no backing for them, they were just people going "I'd like to see a y-wing re-release sometime soon!"  So I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to what it will be, although if forced I WOULD guess that, with a release of a new build of an old favorite likely in the fall, and with two 'revamps' in last years lineup, this years smaller UCS set is likely to be a new ship or scene that we haven't seen before in the UCS lineup.  Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see something from Rogue One or The Force Awakens, and I would be least surprised to see Ren's shuttle, Rogue One itself, or a UCS U-Wing in that spot.  But again, there's absolutely nothing to back any of that up except rampant speculation.

Cloud city could be anything and at almost any price point. It could be an insult on hoth style playset that includes a few random rooms or Death Star style with a price to match. If we do see one I’ll hedge my bets on it being the former.
My hope, and it is just that, would be that we get a Tantive 4 “Corellian Corvette/Blockade Runner” the original UCS was from 2001 with the 2009 model being smaller and with less parts. Plus pairing this with an Imperial Star Destroyer makes sense.

Although if they do a cloud city playset at least my attention won’t be distracted from saving for the Falcon

As I looked at my LEGO backlog over the weekend and started putting some sets together, it occurred to me that the "Duel" sets provide another opportunity to get a Cloud City set of some kind.  At this point we have (from the recent past):
    - Duel on Naboo
    - Duel on Geonosis
    - Palpatine's Arrest
    - Final Duel
Plus we have the Throne Room set from Last Jedi coming this summer.  (And the Anakin's starfighter set from a few years ago included a couple of Mustafar droids and Obi-Wan and Anakin figs to recreate the scene.)

This leaves only a couple of iconic duel scenes left:
    - Episode IV Obi-Wan and Darth Vader (add in a mechanical closing Death Star door for "Blast the door, kid!" effect,
    - Episode VII Kylo, Finn, and Rey in the snow on Starkiller Base (completely unnecessary, but an easy enough way to package some desired figs), and of course...

    - Episode V Luke and Vader battle on Bespin.  The set could be another $25 set with just the gantry for the final scene.  Or it could be slightly larger and include the room with the destroyed window that Luke falls through as well.  I'm envisioning something that looks not unlike the old Kenner Micro Collection sets and perhaps connects in a similar way.

Since we already got a smaller version of the Carbon-Freeze Chamber, I could live with this.  And it seems like it should be in the pipeline if only because of the continued production of other "duel" sets.

you could do episode IV duel in the death star set?

the duel against dooku and between yoda and sidious in episode 3 are both missing too.

but that the most popular duel have never been made is really surprising. oh wait, it was in cloud city, I think? guess it should come with a "I am your father" sound brick lol

I could go for the hammerhead Corellian Corvette and an ISD so you could restage the big space battle from Rogue One.

No, I think he means the duel on Grievous’ ship that opens up Ep 3.  Good point though I don’t really think of that as a proper duel.
