World Cup 2018 - LEGO?

mdtvandymdtvandy Member Posts: 61
Does anyone think LEGO will produce any sets or minifigures for this (well, next) year's World Cup in a vein similar to #71014 or the older football sets (#3569 or #3425)?

I'd be particularly interested in seeing Denmark, England, Spain, and France in minifig form.

I can’t wait to get my hands on a USA figure if they make them. Oh wait!

I doubt it. Individual teams, maybe. But all the teams, unlikely. Licensing with all the individual FAs is unlikely, and if they do generic team colours with no badges or insignia, then it's a pass (!) for me.

@M_Boss At lease an American team won the World Series again this year. Like they do every year. Undisputed world champions in that sport :-)

Maybe they'll be the next special CMF lineup!
(like Olympic UK and the German national team)

I can dare to dream. The 1998 World Cup sets are one of the jewels of my collection and I would love to see them updated. The only FA they licensed was the Dutch, I think, since all the other countries only had flags for their stickers.

So, no need to update that licence, then.

The first World Cup LEGO sets were from 1998.  The games were held in France, which won that year on home turf.  But the only countries that had World Cup LEGO sets that year were the Netherlands, Britain, Germany and Austria.  For a long time I wondered why only those countries... but that was explained when Merlin, Shell, Kaufhof and RAN were the corporate sponsors for those first World Cup promotional sets.
