Collectable Minifigure Series Ideas

SearchlightRGSearchlightRG Member Posts: 271
So with the recent announcement of the second The LEGO Batman Movie Minifigure Series, I've been thinking about ideas for other potential minifigure series. Wanted to share them, and open it up to anyone else who has similar ideas:

Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu
The following are the most desirable in my mind; here are definitely other characters who could use figs/additional variants. Honestly there are enough nonphysical characters that I'd rather leave out the Ninja, but I doubt it would go over well.
  • Lloyd-Green Ninja (child) or Vermillion armor
  • Kai-Kid, Beach Wear (from "The Last Hope"), Teacher Outfit
  • Cole-Kid, Beach Wear, Teacher Outfit, Corrupted (from "Rise of the Spinjitzu Master"), Gold, or Vermillion
  • Jay-Kid, Beach Wear, Teacher Outfit, Corrupted, Gold, or Vermillion
  • Zane-Pink, Kid, Beach Wear, Teacher Outfit, Corrupted, Gold, or Vermillion
  • Nya-Formal Wear or Corrupted
  • Wu-Elemental Master
  • Garmadon-Elemental Master (see above link), Purified
  • Misako
  • Captain Soto (pirate gear)
  • The Mechanic
  • Khanjikan
  • Zugu'rai (as seen in Day of the Departed)
  • Acronix-Elemental Master (with show-accurate helmet)
  • Jay's Mother
  • Master of Earth
  • Master of Ice
  • Master of Metal/Gravity (it seems debatable which he is)
  • Master of Shadow
  • Master of Sound
The Lord of the Rings (seems possible given the recent announcement of the Amazon series)

The Hobbit

I would LOVE to see a Lotr CMF series. Maybe it could coincide with the upcoming TV series, if Lego manages the licensing part with Amazon.

No no no...as if i don't have enough problems trying to collect series 1-10 without the pain of more of these evil little buggers being introduced...

A Star Wars one would be nice, a variety of background characters and none of the major ones.

Actually a bog standard CMF series would be nice, its over 6 months since the last one. With TLNM and TLBM bookmarking series 17 and the second TLBM one up next it'll be 12 months between it and series 18.

If there were a Star Wars one you can be sure there'd still be a few major characters for the kids who don't know all the random background aliens. Best case scenario, those major characters would be variants or costumes we hadn't gotten before (or at least ones that could use an update).

To be honest there aren't a ton of "themed" CMFs that I'm still wanting for. We got a great Ninjago Movie series this past year, which mostly scratches that Ninjago itch for me. An Elves one would be lovely but it's not going to happen. Nexo Knights won't either, since by all indications it seems to be on its way out. Beyond that, there's not a ton of other themes I'm currently into. I guess if the Avatar: The Last Airbender license ever returned, it would be a pretty good fit for a CMF series.

I would love a LOTR series. There's so many possibilities: Faramir, Pippin in his Gondor garb, Merry in his Rohan Garb, Denethor, Sauron, Gaffer Gamgee and so on. I could probably list an entire series with a bit of thought.

I'm unclear of the exact status on that currently. I know that at one point Lego avoided releasing Star Wars "minifig packs" for that reason, but the exclusivity of that action figure deal (or the interpretation of that to encompass minifigures) may have changed in recent years for all I know. I know several years back I would not have expected Star Wars "constraction" figures for that reason, but licensing complications didn't seem to prevent that.

Yeah, the unfortunate reality of the CMFs is that you're always going to have a handful of slots at least taken up by major characters. It isn't such a bad thing, of course, if you can get some variants that have yet to be released physically, as you've said-a Rebels series, for example, would be well-served by bringing in Season 3-4 variants of the main cast, as only one character has gotten such a release thus far.

Honestly the Ninjago and Middle-Earth ones I've hit upon are the biggest draws to the idea for me as well-I'm not into that many of the current themes either. A Nexo Knights line does seem unlikely, though some of the TV exclusive characters might be fun. Some Superheroes sets-not tied to TLBM-might not be a bad idea, especially for variants/characters who have yet to appear as a physical figure.

Pretty much any series that would bulk up collections of pre-existing themes, or to expand short run themes would be great.

Star Wars/LOTR would be fantastic for bulking up older themes, but the true dream is a Doctor Who theme to expand upon the measly 5-6 characters officially available now.

Actually as Im thinking of it - a series based around a number of smaller developed/indie games would be a blast.

Things like Undertale, Spelunky, Owlboy, Hyperlight Drifter, Cuphead etc.

And though it would never happen I can dream of one for Persona can't I?

Hasbro has exclusive production and distribution licensing rights for action figures.  However, that has nothing to do with the building toy licensing that LEGO has.

LEGO doesn't do a SW CMF Series because why would one sell ten or fifteen $3.99 packs at 75% margin, when you can sell a $14.99 set at 85% margin, $29.99 set at 85% margin and a $129.99 set at 85% margin...

NO to Vader, Maul (unless Clone Wars/Rebels Maul), Rey, Finn, Han, Luke

At one point, I read that Hasbro would not let them because you were essentially buying a single figure (which they considered an “action figure”, not a construction set). I don’t recall where I read that- it was a while back- but I guess it could have been misinformation?

    That definitely makes sense.

Folks like to speculate.  Unfortunately, most of those folks have little understanding of licensing, manufacturing, and marketing that occurs in the toy industry.

It generally starts with - "I would like a SW CMF set."  And then some erroneous deductive reasoning occurs using these factors: 1) Hasbro makes SW action figures; 2) I don't want to buy a $400.00 Death Star for a Stormtrooper Luke; 3) LEGO should make unique figures I want in the cheapest pack possible.

Which results in - "Hasbro must be blocking a SW CMF set."

Clearly, the popularity of SW sets and waves of constraction figures ought to demonstrate that Hasbro has no ability to limit what LEGO opts to produce.  LEGO puts different figures in certain sets to drive you buy them all.  All of the principle characters of Rogue One could have been put in a single battlepack.  Shockingly, they were not.  You have to buy all of the R1 sets to get the set of figures...

(TLBM tuxedo minifigs are another good example to drive sales of multiple sets.)

The other way to look at it is how we got the Simpsons and Disney CMFs.  Are there enough kids to support the production of thousands of 5-7 Disney-themed playsets or 5-7 Simpson-themed playsets?  (Something along the lines of Scooby-Doo or Angry Birds.)  I would surmise the answer is "no".

Thus, we have "one" set of the figures that people want without the risk of thousands of sets taking up shelf space, etc. if LEGO's marketing people don't see a viable theme.

Concerning the whole Hasbro and the action figure issue, people forget that Lego produces polybags of just star wars characters that include no extra build.  Hasbro is not an issue.

Silly of me to forget the Brigadier-I am hereby chastened.

As for Paul McGann, I figure it would make more sense/open up more slots if you associated him and other Doctor Who movie characters with the revived television series, ala:

    Doctor Who
    • Eighth Doctor
    • The Master (Movie Version)
    • War Doctor
    • Ninth Doctor
    • Tenth Doctor
    • Clockwork Droid
    • Eleventh Doctor
    • The Silence
    • Twelfth Doctor
    • and so on.

To be honest, the revival series isn't my favorite...

Old Hulk would be so easy to find! A series like this would be pretty cool. I saw a few clips of that movie and it looked like a neat idea.

I would like to see a Doctor Who series of CMFs.  Outside of that, I would rather Lego produce some very unique figs in the CMF line that are NOT rehashes of something already produced in an earlier release.  My city needs more unique individuals living in it.

A Ninjago Movie series two would be cool. The Surprise Ninja would be a must have for me!

DO Lego still have the Hannah Barbara license?

We could have a CMF line of Flintstones, Jetsons, Top-Cat, Captain Caveman, Smurfs etc - which would be pretty fun. Imagine spin-off sets of the Flintstones sets, or the wacky-racers!

^^ if they do a Ninjago Movie series 2, I would like the Surprise Ninja as well, but the figure I'd want most from the whole movie is the Pilates Studio owner. If there won't be a series 2, I'm hoping he'll be in #70657 Ninjago City Docks

I'm surprised with this being the 60th anniversary (40th for the Minifigure) we aren't getting a special CMF line. We could get classic space, classic castle, and classic town Minifigures.

^ That would be a great idea, but remember - a bunch of 12 year-old kids probably wouldn't be interested.

I think the best we can expect were those 'classic' giveaways from the last few years.

@SumoLego Ill admit Im younger than most on here - and (unusually) spent a large portion of my child watching the tv station Boomerang at my grandparents. Though I harbor quite a bit of love for some of these franchises (Looney Toons is my biggest for sure!) things like The Flintstone, Smurfs, Wacky Races (Perils of Penelope Pitstop), Snorks, Jetsons, etc. really have aged pretty poorly - and thus hold pretty weak standings in those in my age group and below! It'd be fun for sure - but holds a pretty small appeal  think

I meant the classic themed minifigures, not the classic franchises.

I think Scooby-Doo did pretty well, and I'm a bit surprised that there aren't other forays into some iconic franchises.  But you'd probably right in that there may not be the same market for Snorks.  Or more realistically - Flintstones/Jetsons.

'Classic' TV shows. We already have some Batman (Classic Batcave, etc.), but how about Green Hornet, Lone Ranger, Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Ocean, Star Trek, Beverly Hillbillies, Munsters, Addams Family, Flash Gordon, Gilligan's Island, Jetsons, Flintstones, Space Ghost, Johnny Quest, Muppets...

Some of these would have great accessory builds and vehicles (Gilligan's hut, the Seaview sub, Munster's Coach, Addam's Family living room, etc. Space Ghost seems like it would be a great tie-in to some of the older Space themes.) I also gotta think that older sources would be cheaper to license than the newer stuff.

@SumoLego Ah that makes much more sense! I wondered what giveaways you reffered to, musta counted too many ^'s.

Scooby Doo I think is a bit unique because it's a property still being used, and there were those early 2000's movies which did fairly well. Meanwhile something like Topcat has not gotten that same treatment :P

^^ These types of sets seem to get shot down pretty regularly over on the Ideas site.

^ Yes - Scooby-Doo seems to have the longest legs and staying power.

Random semi-related aside: That Scooby Doo movie profited nearly 200 million on a 85 million budget, and the sequel made 160 on a budget of 25 million apparently.

I mean I liked these movies as a kid but - sheesh! That's a lot for being so crap
