Samwise Gamgee from LOTR as he was my favorite literary character. The Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi Doctor Who figures, the Spartan Warrior, and the Barbarian CMF. Tough to narrow it down. Probably could list a ton more.

I find it curious that parents are evaluating the relative suitableness of LEGO themes.  Maybe just a different era?

Chosing toys was frequently a teaching moment (quality, playability, etc.), that I now inflict upon my children.
This happened to me too. As far as I've been able to gather (from a very sketchy memory) my parents bought me and my sister one classic space set each when we were very young (#6842 and #6870). I never got anymore. Nor did I get any Castle. None. I only ever got Town sets for the rest of my childhood.

I think the problem may have been that whenever my parents asked what sets I wanted I usually replied with "All of them!" and so they just took that as reason to select what they liked the look of.

Luckily my mum decided she liked the look of the new Pirates theme in '89!

I think they just wanted to make it easy - my brother got the biggest Space set they could get their hands on, I got the next size down Town set.

I too now devolve the selection process to my offspring, after providing the correct parameters for a successful selection to them.

This is one of my favorites. He's not rare or anything, but he's certainly unusual! That's a red cape piece around his neck - I guess he's some sort of train employee superhero?

You need to attach the torso and legs together, or is that a design feature?

I thought it was a custom, I didn't realise it was an official figure ...

PS. It is actually Bricklink's photo (actually whoever took it for BL), that's where they come from.

It came with Lego Loco, I’ve still got the game box sitting around here somewhere. I think I have all the minifig parts too!

I had to think a bit about this and decided to go old school with my choices... the two figs that came to mind first were Achu from the Amazon wave of Adventurers...
He’s a great looking fig and runs between $40-60 in this condition...

The White Knight from #6086 is even more dear to me though.  I had tried for quite a while and finally acquired a nice version of this set a few months ago.  The minifig alone (sans horse and barding) goes for $60-120 on Bricklink currently!
That center dragon plume (in good shape) will set you back $15-20 alone, so I was very pleased to have an intact Knight come with the set...

^ I have the set also but missing only the white mini dragon plumes. I just can't stomach paying BL prices for them.

I'm not really a minifig collector, but I am a sucker for monochrome minifigs:

I guess he's either naked with tattoos/decals, or he's wearing a 'flesh' colored body suit.  Nice to see some mind-altering substances were in use during design meetings the '90's.

There are so many amazing looking minifigures, but my most prized with the most sentimental value attached is this chap from #6634

Simple design, classic smile. Just perfect. The eagle eyed will spot he's not wearing the correct helmet, the original had the classic space version without the groove for the visor to sit in. This is one I got from eBay complete with the car when I couldn't find my original set coming out of my dark ages. It turned up at the bottom of massive box of half broken sets, tucked under the bucket of a Technic digger for safety! He now stands proud in one of my minifig cases.(I've just noticed that as a child I must have swapped the hands from a spaceman as he now appears to be spotting white driving gloves!)
