What is the next set to be remade?

PapaBearPapaBear Member Posts: 665
A few people have mentioned this so I figured I would make a new thread for it.  I was wondering what people think will be the next set to be remade by The Lego Group and why they think so?

My bet is on something from the UCS like the Y-Wing, and for non-UCS I say the Taj Mahal.

Other ones I could see being remade are the Cafe Corner, Green Grocer, Market Street, a bunch of UCS sets (ISD, Tie Interceptor, Blockade Runner, Death Star II, AT-ST, Vader's Tie Fighter, Cloud City), Harry Potter sets, PoTC ships, Emerald Night, Statue of Liberty, and Eiffel Tower.

Sets like the new Winter Toy Shop #10249 (which is almost an exact replica of #10199) and the new MF have paved the way for more remakes.  The Winter, UCS, and modular themes seem more prone for remakes because we get a least one set from those every year.  I think there is a concern of what iconic architecture sets could really be made at this point.  Tower Bridge has been out for 7 years and when it gets retired I suspect we will get a remake of a landmark already done.  I don't think TLG would pay to license PoTC again, but they are bound to make exclusive pirate sets again that look similar to the ones in that theme.  Also, I can definitely see them licensing Harry Potter again with new HP books coming out.

But seriously, yes, remakes are truly a thing now that the Falcon has landed. Eiffel Tower and UCS Star Destroyer come to mind as good candidates.

They won't rerelease the modulars. The newer ones are a huge cash cow and I can't even tell you the number of customers who come in bragging "I have all of them" only to drop their jaw when I tell them about the original 4 or 5 - they didn't even realize CC and GG existed. The newer ones are superior in every way shape and form (barring size) so TLG's best bet with the modulars is forward.

Insofaras large architectural sets, there are just so, so many. Large scale Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Monticello, Willis Tower, Independence Hall, and a slew of others lend themselves to the big building dynamic.

I, for one, am stunned at the number of rereleases the past few years: Beetle, Carousel, Snowspeeder, Falcon...clearly they're catering the the AFOL market who missed out on these sets from 8 -10 years ago. But, overall, the number of customers who come in bemoaning that those sets are long since retired pales to the number of people looking for new stuff.

I'd love a new blockade runner and an Eiffel Tower that really reflects the structure of the real thing. Also, what could an $800 SSD look like? Mmmmm.

^You missed pronounced Sears. In all seriousness the next remake will probably come from Star Wars. I'm hoping for Cloud City. The way I see it it's not really a remake but, a whole new set. If we're going for more of an update with new parts and techniques I'd go with the ISD.

Strangely enough, the Y- wing is about the only UCS I DON'T see being reissued.  I can certainly see an ISD or Blockade Runner though.
I concur with @MrJackson regarding the Modular line.

I feel they will re-release the first couple of modulars sometime down the line. Not the exact same sets but with interiors and maybe some exterior improvements and changes.

Initially that is what I thought about the modulars, but then why rerelease the Winter Toy Shop?  It's not like the UCS rereleases because all of those remakes are pretty much new and improved ones.  The Winter Toy Shop looks 98% the same.  I have a suspicion that the rereleases are to mainly combat Lepin and deter resellers more than to cater to AFOLs.

True, but I don't think most young Americans know about those, maybe the Louvre, maybe.  I only know about the Arc de Triomphe because I studied French in school.  Even if you see it briefly in movies, it's not really talked about much.

It is a fairly famous Star Wars ship so I bet it gets remade within 10 years or so.  That one is a remake of #7163 I'm pretty sure.  They came out 11 years apart.  I like #10195, myself.

Really?  To me, besides the Millennium Falcon, the X-wing and the Y-wing are the two most iconic rebel scum ships and the X-wing was already redone in a much more improved version.  I'm with @Astrobricks as I'd love a new Blockade Runner (and Eiffel, Eiffel really needs an upgrade), although I think #10019, #10198, and #10030 were all done well.

I agree that the early mods will not be redone; one other reason is because of lack of the some of the parts to make those earlier sets.

Though I will add that I think the Beetle, and Carousel are not re-releases as they are different models from the originals. As for the SW sets like the SnowSpeeder and Falcon, they are Star wars staples and LEGO has made it quite clear they are open to redoing any SW sets and have done so for a long time now.
So that being said I see the UCS Star Destroyer or DS II possibly being redone in their respective scales as there is money to be made there still.

I would imagine the Star Destroyer would be a likely candidate for a remake at this point. The original UCS version is now even older than the 10179 Millennium Falcon and there have been significantly better elements and techniques introduced during that time that it could benefit from. The original tends to droop after several years and I imagine a more extensive Technic underpinning could alleviate this problem.

I have lots of things that are drooping now i am older... but I won't go into details.

If you asked me a year ago if I thought a new UCS Star Destroyer would be coming, it'd be a no, but now I think it's guaranteed. LEGO listened when we said we wanted the Falcon and now the Star Destroyer is at the top of a lot of people's lists. If it's not in development now, it will be soon. Give it 5 years and we'll have one. I also have a gut feeling about a Y-Wing coming within 2 years, but maybe that's just me really really wanting it.

I think Market Street will definitely be redone eventually, but not so sure about the other modulars. I don't see an Eiffel tower or anything of that like that coming any time soon either. I think we will be getting an Emerald Knight or something equally fantastic eventually.

Of all things, there's one re-release we're definitely going to get even though nobody asked for it... another Sopwith Camel.

Remaking an earlier set is different to making it. The lack of an old part won't stop them remaking something if there is a business case to remake it. They will just use a modern alternative, hopefully updating the design too. If there was a business case for it, they could easily remake a Cafe Corner using modern parts and design.I wouldn't want them to make the Cafe Corner part for part, but at some stage I hope they do a new cafe and even better if it is a corner building.

I don't see the early modulars being reissued - it's been discussed many times and I'm sure Jamie Berard himself chipped in on this forum as to why it is unlikely to happen. As mentioned above, you may as well just keep making new ones with more detailed designs using new/current parts.

I'm sure I've read someone from within Lego (possibly Mark Stafford?) comment that the Toy Shop was re-released because designer capabilities were incredibly stretched that year and it was either reissue the first one with some minor tweaks or have no WV set that year at all. So I wouldn't necessarily consider it as a precedent.

We already "know" from the leakers that HP should be returning next year and that would inevitably mean updated versions of previous sets such as Diagon Alley, Hogwarts, Hogwarts Express and Knight Bus.

As to Star Wars, I love the films but tend not to buy many sets but I would like to see a new version of Cloud City.

I feel like I read somewhere that LEGO intended to end the Winter Village series with Santa's Workshop, and by the time they decided to continue it, they didn't have enough time to design a whole new Winter Village set from scratch in time for a holiday release. I might be misremembering, though, since I can't seem to find a specific source for that.

I'll be original, the most likely to me would be Y-wing and ISD for star wars and Eiffel tower and statue of liberty. I imagine Eiffel Tower could be greatly improved by making it a much more technic intensive build.

I think the closest we get to a Cafe Corner remake appeared in Assembly Square.  I also happen to think the flower shop in the Assembly Square set shuts the door on a Green Grocer release.

I would love a new Eiffel Tower.  Or Parthenon.

I'm actually convinced this will be the next UCS set. All the sets on the shelf in the background of the MF designer video were all recent sets designed by Hans, except for the UCS TIE from 2006. Why else would they put that in the video?

Classic Space has it's 40th next year... so I'm going to "predict" (with all my wishful thinking circuits engaged) a very nearly block for block reissue of the #928 and a theme revival comprising of five other sets updated and expanded:
    #885 - Space Scooter
    #6821 - Shovel Buggy
#6702 - Minifigure set with robots
#6970 - Beta Command, but with a #920 rocket launch homage incorporated
#6928 - Uranium Search or #6952 - Solar Power Transporter
I have these sets but would just love to see official updates.

This. ISD very likely, Eiffel I really hope.

Statue of Liberty seems like it would be hard to improve very much. It's just so un-Lego friendly. (Maybe a constraction version?)

As far as the modulars go, I don't see why they'd do it. It's not like they can improve them to be "closer to the original source material". Maybe I feel this way because personally I'm not sad that I missed the old modulars. I'll just look ahead to the new ones. And unless I'm mistaken, TLG don't rerelease versions of their own IP (unless you count City police and fire stations, and the above mentioned Toy Shop).
  • MrJacksonMrJackson Member Posts: 454
I would agree with the ISD. The original is quite old at this point and there's clearly a market. I think it depends on how much fresh source material TLG think there is for big sets. They seem to shy away from Prequel Trilogy material since the movies are universally panned (though I like 3 very much actually) and the Obi-Wan's Starfighter didn't perform well.  That leaves X-Wing after X-Wing to be remade along with the other OT Vehicles. Almost every OT vehicle that has any screen time barring Luke's Landspeeder has seen a UCS version. I wouldn't be surprised if they came out with a U-Wing considering it was the main vehicle in Rogue 1. As far as architecture, I would love to see a St. Basil's Cathedral or Notre Dame but that won't happen. Maybe Empire State Building? They did Tower Bridge; would Golden Gate require a new shade of red? Tower Bridge is certainly less monochromatic so that's advantageous. A decent Space Needle would be cool. I certainly don't have the answers...

Unfortunately for me, I feel that with this wave of remakes/rereleases/updates (X-Wing, Sandcrawler, Assault on Hoth, Snowspeeder, Millennium Falcon) that it is becoming increasingly unlikely that a UCS A-Wing will be made.

I will throw out one that will probably never be remade though, and that would be the UCS B-Wing. I personally really liked that set but it didn't sell well until the sale as far as I'm aware.

Outside of Star Wars, the Eiffel Tower and Taj Mahal seem like good candidates, and I think a dark horse could be the Wright Flyer.

Edit: Another one to consider would be a brick built mini-figure, especially with the popularity of mini-figures nowadays. That set was released in 2000.

I can't believe there hasn't been a Cloud City remake yet. It's been what, 14 years? I thought they were going to do a series of smaller scenes starting with the Carbon Freezing Chamber, but now it looks like that was just a one-off.

I think with re-makes you have to look to the wonderful world of the movies. Star Wars will continue to run for years yet, so the focus is almost certainly on that series as it will drive sales without Lego having to do significant marketing by themselves, but with new films the focus must be on the new vehicles/ships etc.  The remakes need to be the same in both the original trilogy and the new films, which is why the UCS Falcon made such a good choice for a re-launch.

So what vehicles are there through out all the films? I think the x-wing and tie fighter are to recent to re-launch, so I'm hoping for an AT-AT, or AT-ST!

It wouldn't surprise me if they started to make more of the prequel trilogy over the next decade. Kids that would have grown up with the PT being "their" SW would have been in their late teens and 20s over the past decade. But entering their 30s in the next decade. So they would have been through their growing up / income poor stage in the recent past and probably entering their better income period in the near future.

The last standard ISD set was just a few years back, 2014 I think, and it was in my opinion the best one yet.  Not sure how it would be improved upon without going up in scale.  I'd love to see that though, as that set has a hefty premium on the secondary market currently.

I should have specified better, what I meant is the Imperial Star Destroyer as a UCS set, as opposed to a Super Star Destroyer. The Imperial Star Destroyer is therefore a 'standard' star destroyer in comparison to the Super Star Destroyer.

Apologies on the confusion. I don't actually expect a retail (as opposed to UCS/D2C) ISD for the next several years, especially with the new Fist Order Star Destroyer getting released this year.
