For FREE to ALL: Exclusive Instructions for Rocket Ship "Arcade" Build (LEGO Manager Exclusive)

samiam391samiam391 Member Posts: 4,486
Every year LEGO has a Brand Manager Retail Conference (with the 80 or so managers within the US) and since 2015 they've given out an exclusive minifigure and set to each of the managers.

I've managed to acquire instructions for the 2016 set. Since LEGO really deserves to be shared I thought I would share the instructions with any wonderful folks on here that would be interested in them. It seems perfect for a LEGO city!

I do still have somewhat of a vested interest in this set retaining some exclusivity (won't go into details on that) so there does have to be a few ground rules:
Brickset honor code...
1. Please do NOT share the instructions with anyone outside of this forum.
2. These instructions are for the forum. Please don't take them, mass produce the set, and then sell it on eBay as an "manager exclusive". Frankly, I could have done that but I chose not to because I'd rather share it with you all!

If you are interested in the set:
Please PM and I'll then send you jpegs of the instructions and parts list.

I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Please understand there may be a delay in sending you the files as family health problems are back in force, so my schedule has been quite variable!

Thanks,
Samuel

There is a gear system in place that allows the rocket to move back and forth!

    @Kokkie20 - I checked your message. Image 9928 has steps 19-21!
  • ricecakericecake Member Posts: 878
Also, and this confused me for a second at first, steps 1-21 are the gray base, then the numbering starts over again with 1-18 building the rocket, then the final step 22 is attaching the rocket to the base.

    15+ more instructions sent out.

That brings the total to roughly 65 so I better see a lot of great finished projects posted on this thread within the next few weeks! Happy building :)

Cool, So all the parts were readily available with no substitutions?
I worrisome thing is that I cannot afford to buy the parts at the moment.

I have two plans for mine. Simple plan find my parts, and make the rocket into a soap box derby car. More complex plan buy the #10257 Carousel, and change out the animals for vehicles(rocket, motorcycles, helicopter......)

Now that I have the instructions, I have to find time and money to Bricklink the parts!
  • ricecakericecake Member Posts: 878
I just built this on Mecabricks, but in order to honor @samiam391 's request not to distribute the instructions, I have disabled opening the model in the workshop.

Put together a Bricklink wanted list, two stores have the lot for just over £10. Quick look through my unsorted tub has given me half of the pieces already.
  • Johnyk668Johnyk668 Member Posts: 73
@madforLEGO no problems with sourcing any of the parts and all reasonably priced. Ended up costing around $30ish for the lot

Lego deserves to be shared... but then don't share the instructions with anyone?
    What nu-speak is this?

And $3000 for a tiny piece of plastic that could be mass produced by the company at any time is insane.

It is a cool little model though

The main one was part #99207 (1x2 to 2x2 bracket inverted, Red). I used black on the right model and LBG on the left one. You can barely see that color at both ends.
Good to know. I'm struggling to find a seller with 8 of them, found four so I can substitute the middle pairs for another colour instead.

I don't understand posts like the OP.  You take Lego's property, violate their copyright, and then ask OTHER people to follow YOUR rules, concerning LEGO's intellectual property - all while claiming that YOU have some interest in maintaining exclusivity?  Can you explain your thought process here?

The thought process is likely to be - LEGO didn't want them publically distributed as they didn't put them on their own website. They have occassionally done this with some instructions from non-retail sets.  The set is not a retail set, so most people will not need access to them as they won't even know about it. Sam is doing people here a favour by letting them have access to the instructions to build a neat little model, but doesn't want people to download them with the intent of making money by putting sets together and selling them as the real thing when they have just assembled the parts without the genuine instructions or packaging. As to the exclusivity, I don't know. It may be that he has the real thing and wants to sell his set at some stage in the future, and the value might be affected by others trying to sell made-up sets using copies of the instructions he has provided.

Here is the nature of my confusion - I guess:

1). Lego has provided a limited distribution of its IP, having made the conscious decision not to make their IP available to a general audience....for reasons we cannot entirely know - but MAY include wanting to sell the IP or sets related to the IP in the future.

2). OP has made the conscious decision to make Lego's IP available to a general audience, without receiving permission to do so from Lego.

3). OP insists that the audience he (or she or they or gender fluid person or whatever term makes sure maximum inclusion is achieved) makes Lego's IP available to not, in turn, make it available to whomever THEY choose.  In other words, he is asking them not to do what he has just done.

4). OP seems to assert a financial opportunity for himself...while denying the same to others, including Lego.

So my question is, what is the thought process that leads the OP to claim the right to distribute Lego's IP without permission, while denying the right of others to do so the same thing?

I sorta kinda get what and possibly why you’re interested in the the thought process (many a time I’ve wondered about similar situations), but given that it’s basically a readily available gift horse, it may not be that necessary to look it in the mouth. Just can’t imagine this being the best starting point for a philosophical debate on any sort of rights (a word I use loosely here).

Maybe, but does it matter if a few people know how to build the model? They can still sell it in future if they want. I imagine the real reason they don't release the instructions is that people cannot buy the model. This can cause problems if they release instructions for something that people cannot buy from them.

2). OP has made the conscious decision to make Lego's IP available to a general audience, without receiving permission to do so from Lego.

You say general, but it is fairly select. But yes, there is no permission from LEGO.

3). OP insists that the audience he (or she or they or gender fluid person or whatever term makes sure maximum inclusion is achieved) makes Lego's IP available to not, in turn, make it available to whomever THEY choose.  In other words, he is asking them not to do what he has just done.

Yes. This is not really any different to him purchasing the set from one of the delegates and showing a friend how to build the model but asking them not to pass it on.

4). OP seems to assert a financial opportunity for himself...while denying the same to others, including Lego.

He has asked others not to BL and sell the sets for profit. I cannot see how he is denying LEGO the opportunity to make money from it though. They can make the set and the minifigure and sell it and him releasing the instructions to a small number of people will have next to no impact on it.

As to him using it as a financial opportunity, I don't think he is. He specifically says he could have made a load of these and sold them on ebay, but I don't think he is doing that.

People here often do others a favour but ask or imply that the receiver doesn't profit from it. For example, I have often bought things from US users where they have done me a favour and supplied at cost, and I have bought things and sent to people in the US at cost, rather than paying the inflated price on ebay or BL. This is often done as a favour, with the expectation that people are not asking you to get them stuff just so they can sell it on at the inflated price. This is similar to that. He has something that others might like, and presumably has paid handsomely for the set. He is sharing it, but asks others not to abuse his trust.

Did you think that maybe he got permission to distribute it as he is? He could be following LEGO's wishes. It's not like this kind of thing has never happened before by LEGO giving us "gifts".

Quite simply, life is much too short to argue with people like you.

If I was the greedy, rude, copy-right infringing, disgusting, and horrible person you paint a picture of me being... then I never would have distributed the instructions to the Brickset forum in the first place. Take a step back and realize that not everyone in the world has selfish ulterior motives. That is all I will say on the matter.

If, at some point, you decide you want the instructions then feel free to PM me.

To be fair @alaskaguy didn't call you greedy, rude, disgusting or horrible. I also found the method of your delivery a bit odd but chose not to say anything as I didn't see the need. I am not sure what you meant by "people like you" but it was the only thing I found rude on this thread.

Cutting to the chase - my point was really, why does OP care if someone else makes kits and sells them?  If OP can distribute the instructions at all, without it being an issue, where is the harm if someone uses that same information to sell kits and making them available to anyone who wants to buy them?
