Well it ain't horrible. Looks about $30. I don't expect this one to sell out quickly like the past few

Why do the women get their own set? Why not just "the people of NASA?"

Wow, that's much better than the original submission. I'll have to get it just for the micro shuttle and HST.

I didn't care for the original that much but they've really improved on it IMHO. This was supposed to be an easy pass for me but if it's priced right, maybe not.

I like it, especially the box art.

The 'women' thing I will never understand but I don't have a problem with it.  A definite purchase for me.

Looks good. I have no problem with how the set turned out. I may pick up more than one.

Because this is the project people supported and what the project creator chose to focus on. You might as well be asking "Why do birds get their own set? Why not just 'animals'?"

Anyway, looks nice, although the shuttle orbiter seems out-of-proportion with its fuel tank. I love the Hubble Space Telescope design! I can see this set selling well, especially given its low price point.

It's interesting that Katherine Johnson didn't make the cut… wonder if LEGO had trouble getting the rights to her likeness after her portrayal in the movie Hidden Figures.

But Lego didn't have to pass it. And although Lego might have passed a NASA set with only men they wouldn't have passed a "Men of NASA" set. A people of NASA set could have highlighted that men and women worked together.

So it's basically Research Institute Part II. I do like the fact that it's cooler than the original submission (which was essentially a minifigure pack). But this also basically means the submission was not chosen on the merit of its construction.

The set looks great, can't wait to get it.

But it's a shame Katherine Johnson is no longer in the set. I guess there are reasons for it, but was still looking forward to her being in it, as of only two of the people in the original submission I already knew about (the other being Mae Jemison).
  • myscrnnmmyscrnnm Member Posts: 25
My only complaint as far as the construction is concerned, is that LEGO did not bring back the large astronaut visor (BL part 23318) molded in black for Mae Jemison's helmet. Can't believe it's been over a decade since that mold was last used. Similarly disappointed we did not see a revival of the fish statue for the Old Fishing Store, as that was incorporated in the original IDEAS submission.

Can't say I'll be getting it personally (more of a science-fiction fan than a science-fact one to be honest), but there's no denying that's one hell of a nice build they got going there. Definitely a massive improvement over the original proposal's build.

I mean, it'll probably be practically impossible to get hold of 'em thanks to the usual hordes of scalpers, but still - s' a good set innit.

Looks much better than the original submission; the designer really did a great job on making the models more appealing. Especially nice seeing this element: https://brickset.com/parts/6196548 in a significantly cheaper set.

The person who found this set apparently bought it at a Lego monobrand store for 32 EUR. Meanwhile, this listing on a Hungarian(?) site states the set comes with 229 pieces which sounds about what is expected for the price: http://m.kockashop.hu/lego/women-of-nasa-21312

This is so cool!! I already thought this would be what I'd do with my VIP double points haul, and the pics confirm it. Lovely little vignettes. Enthusiastic as I was about the original concept, these are going to look much better on display. I just hope I can get one - this might be a sit-up-till-midnight-at-launch job...

Init - an instruction to print setters...... or, I suspect here, a colloquial & somewhat lazy contraction of "Isn't it"

After having recently seen Hidden Figures, this looks like a cool set. Wish it had the women from the movie though, might have been a cool inclusion.

I could see if the set was labeled Hidden Figures where licensing might be an issue, but I assume the real people are not licensed properties. Might have to get theirs or their heirs' permission I suppose.

looks an awful lot better than the submission, although that Margaret Hamilton vignette looks incredibly dull and pointless.

I never had any issue with any reason for approval of the project except that it looked a very weak excuse for a minifigure pack, two out of three of those finished vignettes corrects that.

I agree. Personally, I would have preferred a series of small vignettes of this quality without minifigures depicting the NASA timeline. There are some nice printed parts here too. And that is probably what I will do - either build the vignettes or buy the set and sell of the minifigures. Although I'm not sure what the secondary market for these figures will be like. Without the vignettes, they appear a bit anonymous.

Disappointing to see the LEGO group encouraging misandry.
I think this argument has raged here before, but it's a little extreme to claim the release of a toy set celebrating the role of women in the space programme is tantamount to misandry...

Personally I'm not that into minifigs and though the added vingettes are nice, I'm happy there will be an Ideas set I can skip after the recent run of great (but expensive) sets!

Looks nice. I was hoping for the old reel-to-reel computer banks though, those would have been great for classic space builds. As @CCC pointed out though, there are already a few nice printed parts there, I will want some of those if not the whole set, but the price will need to be right!

Oh, for goodness sake! I was hoping to miss out on this set, but they've gone and made the shuttle look really cool. Although it looks like I might be able to bricklink that...

If any of my children are interested in it I'll probably buy it for them though.

The shuttle looks like it should be really easy to Bricklink. There are no printed parts and nothing that looks rare.

I know right?  I just wish they made sets with more men in them.  I feel we're severely underrepresented.
When it comes to named astronauts in official sets, men are underrepresented. It is a shame they missed an opportunity to do Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins in the Saturn V set. At maybe an extra $10 for three minifigs on a small display stand. I wonder if there was some licensing or similar issue there too.

I was puzzled about that too. Was going to suggest scale was the issue, but having seen the size of the thing in pics (haven't built mine yet), it's hard to imagine...
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
If it was on a display stand, scale doesn't really matter - just like in this set. Unless that is a one person shuttle!

I must admit that I actually quite like it, although I have to be honest that it does essentially appear to be Research Institute II.

My opinion on the actual approval has been noted (although looking back probably not in the best way) so I won't repeat it here, and honestly if that still wants to be debated about there is already a thread for exactly that.

I swore I wouldn't by this on principle alone - the original submission NEVER deserved a slot based on the quality of the build.  Now I see the awesome Orbiter and Hubble (not to mention the Hubble picture which, if printed, is possibly the most impressive printed piece ever made) and I'm pretty sure I need it in my life.
The TLG designer of this set seriously deserves some sort of award!  I haven't seen a turd so well polished since that episode of Myth Busters...

Meh, we already dominate STEM fields, if they want a little boost to try to help remedy that discrepancy I'll give them a pass.  But everyone has their opinions.

It seems like the shuttle external tank needs to be at least one brick taller. But on the up side, that Hubble model would fit nicely in the bay of many of the previous shuttle sets.
