    After all the mentions of TJ Maxx and Lego, I stopped by one today here in northern Indiana. There were two or three large Prince of Persia sets in good supply (3-4 each?). They also had Gateway of the Squid and Turbo Sub from Atlantis. There was one repackaged small PoP set, Ostrich Race maybe. One King's Carriage Ambush. The discount looked like 20%, at least on the Atlantis sets.

    ^^ yeah, still haven't seen any TJ's or Marshalls lower their prices . . .

    When I picked up an Ostrich Race for $7, there was only one at $7 and about 10 at $10 each. I asked if I could get more than just the one for $7, and the cashier said that the amount of the discount had something to do with the date on the price sticker. I guess the one I got came in earlier than the others, and had made it farther along in the discount process.

    Seems the have rhyme and reason, but I couldn't tell you what they are... best advice is keep checking back. When I got the ones I found, I saw Fight for the Dagger with no clearance at all.

    Yeah they've both been slow around here. I might try Tj Max in "the hood" this weekend and see if they are any further along.

    My local Lego shop had Ramses Pyramids for $7.99 yesterday. Bought four for the baseplates as its still a good buy.

    ^ I bought one at a LEGO shop for $10 on Monday for the same reason. Until we actually build a MOC I can't justify more than that :). They had quite a few left in Birmingham, wasn't expecting to see them.

    I was lucky enough to score 6 of those for 3.98 at the LEGO store the day after Christmas as they opened. They were marked at higher but I asked them to doublecheck online and they matched it. Turned out weeks later they were priced wrong online so I'm glad I was there early for what was a pretty mediocre sale relative to other stores.

    One of my local LEGO stores wouldn't entertain the thought of matching the [email protected] sales the day after Christmas so I was bummed about the Ramses Pyramids but I agree that the day after Xmas was a waste of my time as I didn't buy anything from this store. Fared much better at Wal-Mart though.

    I went to a Meijer today (Mishawaka, Indiana) -- first time in a while. A few Lego sets were 25% off. I saw smaller Atlantis sets, King's Carriage Ambush, Red Ninjago, Cars 2 Bentley Bust Out, and Pharoah's Quest. Also, they had the Series 5 Minifigures at 2/$4.

    On a different note: The Meijer had the shelf tags for the new SW sets up already. I was surprised to see the TIE fighter at $49.99 or so. I though it was going to be more than that.

    ^ Yep, saw those same sets at 25% off at my local Meijers. Just waiting for them to go 50% or better. I didn't notice the CMF 5 deal. Was it posted?

    In regards to the Star Wars - I bought some at Meijer last week. When I went in this weekend they had pulled them from the shelves. One of the workers told me that corporate reps (Meijer) had come through the store and demanded they pull the items. They are not to be sold until Jan. 30. Which sucks because just down the street Toys R Us is happily selling them at marked up prices - and now they have exclusive in-store sales until Jan. 30.

    The CMF 5 deal was a "Price Drop," which means that it may be store specific.

    The question I ask is that these 'deals' at TJMaxx and other stores... how does someone know that the boxes were not opened contents removed and closed again? Small boxes (I'm guessing) should be fine, but as much as I want to get a couple of Whitecap bays for a good price, one has to wonder if they really hold Whitecap bay parts and figures....

    I am almost tempted to stop buying at B&M stores altogether due to this.(not to say it couldn't occur online too)

    It's a classic Schrodinger’s Cat situation. You never know if it's complete until you open it, but once you open it, it's no longer sealed, and you run the risk of the person you sell it to possibly claiming that it's incomplete.

    The only sets that I would consider reasonably "safe" are the ones that are not taped, but have the dashed perforated line where you jab your thumb in to open the box.

    @madforlegos sometimes I wonder how many of these 'scum' scammers are reading everything we talk about on this forum? Do they feel its worth the profit of a few bucks for such a dirty trick as to empty a box, refill with trash and return for refund? Then turnaround and sell the mini-figs for a marked-up price to other innocent people? A whole lot of work, a lost soul (or at least a poor conscience)... for a few measly dollars in the pocket. They should do themselves a favor and use that slick mind to make profit at something that helps others.

    Always makes me sick to see the ripped open boxes sitting on shelves -- especially when they are on clearance!!!

    @BrickDancer - That is one of my biggest LEGO fears. Some days I just want to rip open all the boxes and count the bags, but then I just end up staring at pile of boxes.

    Well, with any investment, there's a risk. The ones ripped open in the store with a clearance sticker, I'd pull the parts bags out right in the store. I did that with a Hillside House at TRU that had some water damage, to where the box had lost a lot of its structural integrity. The instructions were still in decent shape. I pulled the bags out there and made an (semi)informed decision before buying it. Luckily, everything was there.

    Yeah I am debating whether or not to start opening boxes at the customer service desk before leaving the stores now...
    Otherwise Ill just buy most of my sets online.

    I only buy from non-Lego stores at significant discount. If one is buying at significant discount, the occasional "missing pieces box" can be absorbed. There is waste and lost product in every business. There are risks involved in business. Minimize your risk as best you can but you have to account for it at some level. You will make mistakes, buyers will scam you or be unreasonable, and people will steal and reseal boxes.

    And if you work hard enough, smart enough and do well you will get the honor of being labeled a greedy business owner who doesn't care about anybody and be taxed more.

    Went to a Marshall's that must have been closing down. All items were 60% off marked clearance price. They didn't have much. Picked up Ninjago Brickmaster "book" and two Magikus sets for $13 total.

    ^ better than nothing :). The target with 40 PQ pyramids finally went to "70% off" at $25.04, I'm not arguing with the math when it's in my favor :).

    The Target I went to last night took all the PQ pyramids off the shelf. A couple days ago had about 10 left at 50%. I was lucky enough to find 1 hidden away and when I scanned it it rang at $0.00.

    I took it to the register and the guy didn't know what to do. He took it to a manager and they told him $49.98. He put that in the register and I asked if that was with the 70% off because it was clearance.

    The guy didn't know, so he took 70% off the $49.98...I quickly swiped my card and left when I totaled out at $16.04 for the Pyramid!

    I think I will try that again tonight with the Atlantis Portal I found stashed away too...

    ^Really? What would shipping cost on boxes this size? I'd've thought it would cost as much to ship as to buy, but I've never shipped LEGO.

    I can't think of anything I'm really looking for though I'm sure I'd find something in your list.

    Before we go any further you need to know that last year my family in Australia got their 2010 Christmas presents in October because of my reluctance to go to the post office, really, this is why I didn't ask if anyone had an Earth Dragon Defense to swap.

    I'd hold on to them till the next time we head your way but with our own LEGO store opening in March I don't know when we'll next be there. Eventually we will, the call of the Children's Museum will grow and grow until we give in, but probably not this year.

    The other thing is that two other people bought one just while I was there, there may not be any left by now.

    Well, I'm just looking for the parts - I wouldn't need the set box, nor the instructions. That should cut the weight down, and size of box required. I'm guessing three (3) sets would weigh about 9 lbs in a shipping box, and could ship for $10.81 via Parcel Post.

    But I understand about priorities - more important things to do than running around buying LEGO for strangers. :) Let me know if something strikes your fancy at my shop:

    I don't mind running to one store to buy LEGO for acquaintances, I mean I spent days looking for that earth dragon for a little friend (who is now so LEGO obsessed we're planning a joint family trip to the new Discovery Center in Atlanta in April, mission accomplished).

    You've caught me on a slow day (housework or Target? decisions, decisions) so I'll run by that Target for you later. Honestly, nothing in your shop is on my list but I'll check with my husband whether any of the train cars or Star Wars sets interest him. We'll figure something out.

    I haven't heard a date for the store opening, where did you look for news when the Indianapolis store was on the way? I did check and they were hiring for the store manager a couple of weeks ago so it seems to be moving along.

    Well, why wasn't the museum advertising that in December? It was all Mr. Potato Head. Now we may be back there in March. I'll have to think about it. We love the museum, for many reasons, but ever since Nashville had two major Chihuly exhibitions one year my daughter's been in love with his work. She enjoys the entire museum, and I enjoy watching her, but I'd happily sit down there for hours looking at the ceiling. Your show looks great too, we haven't been to one, apparently we missed the Birmingham one by a day when we were there last week.

    I spit out some coffee when I read that. I am exactly the same way. Birthday presents become "combined birthday/Christmas" packages which become "birthday/Christmas/birthday" packages.

    There was a regional manager which contacted our LUG. They were looking for people to help build the "ribbon" models - which get displayed in the little windows within the store. They also asked us to help on the grand opening day - assisting with the building/tear-down of the Buzz Lightyear model. I think we were contacted a couple of months in advance. It looks like the Tennessee Valley LEGO Train Club is helping out:

    I'd suggest contacting them and see what they know. You might also ask if they need help with anything. On the day of the grand opening, those who put in X number of hours for the model build (I think it was 4 hours), received 30% off a total purchase in the store that day (some restrictions applied - such as the stipulation that it not be for re-sale).

    I did run across one Portal of Atlantis set at Target at 50% off, but it was opened. At the register, the person was more than willing to let me double check the contents right there. It took all of a minute to count 9 bags, two books, and verify the bags had not been opened. I did forget to check for the stickers, but they were in there. Open boxes are a pain, but in this case, the quick check at the register paid off for us, and my son had a great time with the build.

    After my good luck scoring the PQ Pyramid at Target, I went back the next day for the Portal of Atlantis I found stashed away. It was still ringing up at $0.00 so I was able to convince them it was 70% off... Of $49.98... Got for $16.03!

    So I got the Pyramid and portal for a total for $32.07... SCORE!

I may contact them to help, it would be fun and we're hoping to buy the town hall that day. I dont resell, unless your pyramids count. What do you want to bet they'll choose the weekend of your brickshow to open?

    @tamamahm I checked an open box this week too, they were more than happy to let me and it was all there.

    BTW TJ Maxx may be getting sick of PoP, I found Quest Against Time for $10 yesterday.

    That would be the perfect time to get the Town Hall. Hopefully it does get released in March. Volunteers also get one of the Store Grand Opening Sets - which are store specific. Lately they are doing custom minifigs in a 3 pack. Here's the one from the Indianapolis store opening:

    Note that the stores often do a soft opening, and that the "grand opening event" may not coincide with the day the store actually opens to the public.
    BTW TJ Maxx may be getting sick of PoP, I found Quest Against Time for $10 yesterday.

    ^ I'd heard about the minifigures and that there are often soft openings. I was actually there at the Indy opening without realizing it was the opening (driving back from Chicago, searched LEGO store in Google maps). When I realized the hundreds of people down the center of the mall were in line for the LEGO store I left and drove on :(.

    I don't think I'd make a special trip to TJ Maxx, the other sets weren't that low, but if you were in the area

    ^ It had a pile of about 5 price stickers on it, I think it had just been steadily decreasing. The Ostrich race was $10 but the Fight for the Dagger was $25 still. Who knows? I just thought I'd let people know in case their stores were the same.

    I've not seen an MVR at any of them (or anywhere except TRU for $80), that would be a nice set to have extra of, you can't ever have too many cute little farm animals. Actually, you can, but two sets wouldn't be too much.

    And I thought finding Quest Against Time at $20 was a pretty good! What color was the sticker @Jenni? I understood that yellow stickers were the final mark down before they were "thrown away."

    It sounds like they do mark-downs monthly, so may be worth checking again come Feb.

    Scored some finds at TJ Maxx yesterday:
    2 MVR $40 each
    3 PoP Ostrich Races $7 each
    1 PoP Quest Against Time $30

    I want the Ostriches so at $7 they were a no brainer. The Quest Against Time was not the greatest deal but I have wanted another of these sets for about 2 years and couldn't pass this set up finally. I'm really glad to have found the MVR as this is the only set I was hoping to find at TJ Maxx.

    @avoiceofreason I think $20 is pretty good. I didn't peel them all off but I can tell that there are three yellow stickers. So definitely not the last word at that TJ Maxx.

    I know I could have gotten a better deal last year when the PoP were clearanced at the LEGO Stores but I passed on them. I picked the Ostriches up yesterday because I "needed" more ostriches.
