[US] Sales / Discounts in the New Year

As I recently have re-discovered (and GLAD I did) I am unaware of sale trends and such. I "was given" (was traveling so they gave me a check) for a QAR. I don't want to pull the trigger and order it now when it could go down in price if I just wait a week. Will prices fall come Jan. 1 or should I expect to pay around the same price (I will be buying through Amazon) as I would now?

Also, on a different topic, is Amazon and Lego.com the only places to get the VW T1?

Thanks!!!

I am 75% thru the VW and I love it. Highly recommended.

In the U.S. you can get the VW camper van at ToysRus on-line (or apparently at their flagship store at Times Square). It hasn't been staying in-stock on-line for very long because of all the BOGOs.

We are at the tail end of the sale season. There tends to be AMAZING sales from Sept-Jan, and then a serious dry spell for many months. Now, for QAR, many are predicting that this set (and perhaps the entire lineup) will see retirement this year, especially with Lord of the Rings and more Super Heroes coming in. So that means that you may find it on discount or on sale at a retailer between now and then. The best place to have gotten this on sale that I had seen was the Barnes & Nobles discounts - their 40% and 50% off coupons. But those are now mostly gone from what I can tell - there may be a 30% coupon currently available.

    Good luck!

And check Target as well...I saw several QAR today for 30% off. YMMV, of course.

    B&N 30% off coupon here:

    http://images.barnesandnoble.com/pimages/email/2010/10/KidsClub/1025_KidsClub_Welcome520771.gif

Can be used in-store for LEGO, but not online.

Thanks for the responses. I can't use the coupon because I don't have a kids discount card...no kids.

For stocking stuffers, my local Meijer (Midwest USA) stores had an octopus polybag, a police helicopter polybag, Lego pens, and CMF series 5. When I went on the 26th, none of these were discounted, even though the other stocking stuffers were. Has anyone in the forum seen any change in this situation?

On a related note, has anyone seen regular Lego sets on discounted clearance at Meijer?

I was hoping some of the stocking stuffers might be discounted, but no (I'm in MI right now). Also didn't see any clearance... just a few usual discounts that were also up before Christmas (Atlantis sets, etc.).
  • OdinduskOdindusk Member Posts: 763
I was at a Meijer today and a few things were on "clearance" - a very weak clearance. 15 to 20% off, as best I could tell.

Just wondering, will there be a new years sale/clearance at Barnes & Noble. Looking forward to buy some stuff they have in stock.

I bought my QAR at target for $83

Try Target. They have the Harry Potter and Kingdoms Target Practice polybags on sale right now in the holiday clearance aisle. Local prices have ranged from $1.04 to $1.99.
  • CCLINCCLIN Member Posts: 23
Thanks Pacific, I did try the Target down at Cary @ HGWY 54. There are still a couple hundred easy of the Harry Potter 30111 polybags at $1.19 each. I took 2 and left the pile. Was able to find and took the last 5 target practice that I saw there...

If any member is interested in the 30111, let me know and I can drive back next week to pick some up.
  • BTHodgemanBTHodgeman Member Posts: 622
If anyone is interested in the Harry Potter polybag, I could also help. I picked up a few dozen (but did not clear the shelf) today at $1.19 apiece.

    Pm me.

    Brent

PS - I *did* clear the shelf of the Kingdom Archery Practice set... all 1 of them. ;)
  • Pacific493Pacific493 Member Posts: 379
I couldn't help myself and went back to pick up some more. Bought a bunch more HP sets and found 13 more Target Practices...they were scattered around the clearance section...some had fallen down behind the shelves. The store was showing 20 more in inventory, but I couldn't find any sign of them. There are a ton more HP sets left...they must have had 600-700 at the start of the day.
  • BTHodgemanBTHodgeman Member Posts: 622
@Pacific493 - you may get lucky and see some of them go to 90% off. As for Target practice, someone likely has them hiding in the pillows or towels, hoping they'll get to 90% off and them go retrieve them. Or, they were stolen.

Unfortunately, neither of these polybags is on the pegs at the front registers like the Halloween polybags were, so I'm not expecting to see them get to 90% off at any of my local stores.

Waiting for the 90% mark downs is like playing Russian roulette. You might get lucky or you might get to Target only to find the shelf full of sets from a few days ago is now sold out. When you do hit the jackpot at 90% there's nothing else like it for us LEGO bargain hunters!
  • BTHodgemanBTHodgeman Member Posts: 622
@bmwlego - thats why I always buy some at each discount increment.

That way, if it doesn't make it to the next round, I have them... and if it does, I can buy more and then I can return (and potentially) rebuy the more expensive ones.

Found Meteor Strike on clearance for $5.90 at Target. The DBG 16x32 baseplate is worth about $5.00 itself.
  • bmwlegobmwlego Member Posts: 819
Nice sidersdd! I just paid $9.84 for that game. I wanted the baseplate and space logo tiles that make up part of the dice.

Is there another sale at LEGO.com tonight?
  • bor2112bor2112 Member Posts: 321
^Looks like the sale is gone? Anyone know what is going on?

    Sale is over? :)

Anyone check if items are still on sale in the stores? When I visited the Indianapolis LEGO store yesterday they had probably 40 Winter Village Post Offices on the floor with mark down stickers. Will they continue to sell them at that price until they are gone - or ship em back to a warehouse

BTHodgeman, any suggestion on how to return and rebuy them? I picked up 6 of the target practice bags today at 1.04 each but if I can get them for .40 cents I'll give it a shot and hold onto the receipt. Not sure how I'd ask for the items right back after they leave my hands. Maybe just asking straight up to return and re-buy. I don't think they'll be anymore archers in stock by the time they go 90%. Which is when exactly? Seems like all the Targets are going at different speeds.
  • Pacific493Pacific493 Member Posts: 379
@intromission. Target won't let you return and immediately rebuy. You can return, but then you have to wait until they go back on the shelves to buy them back.
  • intromissionintromission Member Posts: 197
    Kinda figured. Thanks.

I bought quite a few of the Target Practices at the $3.49 price (couple dozen) and cleared the shelf of all I could find @the $1.74 price (seven or so iirc).
My local store is @70% off right now, got a few of the HP poly for $1.12 as well.

I was happy to get the ones @ $3.49, last time I had seen them they were $3.99, and ecstatic to get what I found @ $1.74, you can never have too many troops , don't ya know.

The HP poly's have a few pieces that look to be interesting in bulk, only dislike is the minifig is a fleshy..... I have to decide if I want to try and 'dispose' of the 'fig whole, or just the fleshy part or even pull the arms and swap them to other torso's.

Edit, almost forgot, be happy for the discount you got if you want the polybag's, if it's just cheap LEGO then perhaps you may wish to roll the dice as it were, in my opinion the Target Practice Poly's are too sweet to gamble with.

I awoke from the lego dark ages and have re-found the addictive glory of legory. I have about $1,400 worth of legos with tax and shipping included in my cart waiting to be purchased. I am trying to start my lego city. I rather spend about $1,100-$1200. I would push the buy button if they had free shipping and at least 10% off the entire store like they did on black Friday. Also, I think I might have to close all the NY lego stores so I could save on paying taxes also.

But my question, what kind of store wide sales do they have on their site from past years? Or would I have to wait until next year's black Friday sales?

I am not located near any lego stores and the TRU/Wal/Tar stores around me sell the junk. I rather get everything in one shot before they discontinue.

    Any help?

[email protected] really is your best bet right "now". They really don't do anything with pricing until September. Sometimes they give extra points and charge for shipping and sometimes they don't do the points and have free shipping.

If you can wait, TRU usually does buy 2 get 3 deals around March. By then their prices will pretty much equal Lego's prices except for the licensed products so the deal is legit.

Or, wait for Target to restock and get your 5% red card discount -- free shipping too.
  • tdhbrtdhbr Member Posts: 188
If you go ahead with the [email protected] purchase make sure you have your VIP card/number set up ... if my math is right you'll get $70 credit that you can use (almost) immediately on another order.
  • drewsbudrewsbu Member Posts: 28
I emailed the [email protected] to see if they could give me a discount and to when their next sale will be. A very nice woman replied back to me offered me free shipping. I am going to wait and see what March brings.

I saw MVR today for $50 at my local Home Goods. They also had the Kings Carriage set for $30. They had 3 MVRs and just one KC.
  • 1brickshyofcrazy1brickshyofcrazy Member Posts: 31
When you say home goods you mean the one connected to tjmaxx right?
And this was in the US?
    Thanks...

Yes, the HomeGoods affiliated with tjmaxx The store I visited was next door to tjmaxx. And in the US, specifically Cincinnati, OH.
  • BTHodgemanBTHodgeman Member Posts: 622
Huh - I always hear about people finding LEGO at Homegoods and Burlington Coat Factory, but I have never once seen LEGO sets in these stores... grr! lol

    Brent
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
Hmmm... never tried myself. Must visit tomorrow.
  • OdinduskOdindusk Member Posts: 763
lol... Burlington Coat Factory? That might be one of the last places in retail that I would have ever checked for LEGO.

  • slovakiastephslovakiasteph Member Posts: 62
I found MVR for 50 at my Marshalls... they had a small LEGO display for Christmas.
  • scratchdeskscratchdesk Member Posts: 155
All those stores seem to receive overstock and clearance warehouse items. Similar to Marshall's that also had Legos for the holidays.
  • choob99choob99 Member Posts: 147
I too would never think of Burlington!! My Homegoods has never had any nor has Marshall's
  • OdinduskOdindusk Member Posts: 763
I checked out a Marshalls and they had some Lego. Prices were roughly 25-30% below retail, but didn't see anything I wanted.

Burlington Coat Factory had a fairly large toy section (who knew??) but they didn't carry LEGO (jerks).
  • skherbeckskherbeck Member Posts: 33
Today I found the Harry Potter Polybags (the one with the shelves full of potions) in the 90% off after-christmas clearance section of Target... bought 20 of them at 39cents each!
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
I found some Space Police sets at TJ Maxx, but the prices weren't all that great...

Stopped there because it was next to Target and I heard from someone that they had a few sets. What they had was piles of PoP, but not discounted enough to sell, maybe 25% off. The Space Police stuff was 25% off, so I picked up a few for personal use, but the boxes were too beat up to buy any more.
  • mrpolemrpole Member Posts: 15
LFT what sets did they have from Space Police? Im looking for the good guy and bad guy headquarters.

  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
Checked out a TJ Maxx last night since it was next to a Walmart. Only had some beat up boxes of PoP and Atlantis. 25% off

Walked into one of my Lego stores today and swooped up a Toy Shop on clearance. Some guy just returned it :P
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
@mrpole - sorry, just saw your post... The two I picked up were Lunar Limo and Smash n Grab. I think they had one more, but it didn't look interesting.

Not going to get them all, just got those two because they looked cool and were cheap.
  • DavidBrickleyDavidBrickley Member Posts: 363
For anyone near one, check your tjmaxx again. I just found the Quest for Time set at $20 and the Ostrich Race set for $7.
