Hello!

Welcome to the fifth annual Brickset Secret Santa! This event has met with great success over the last few years so hopefully it will do so again in 2017.

Just in case anyone is not sure what a Secret Santa is, here is a quick definition for you courtesy of the OED:

A system whereby each participant is randomly assigned another participant for whom to buy a Christmas present at an agreed cost, so that each member buys one present and receives one present.

The rules of the Brickset Secret Santa are as follows:

- The guide price for the cost of a gift is £15, €20 or $20 (USD, CAD, AUD, NZD).
- Wish lists are welcome, so please send that with your initial message if you would like to include one, or simply make your Brickset 'wanted list' public.
- MOCs are also welcome as long as the total part value roughly corresponds with the guide prices given above.
- Please either wrap the gift before packaging it or indicate on the box that the contents are not wrapped.
- Please ensure that your gift is sent in time for Christmas, final posting dates for each country are available online.

To be a part of it is very simple:

- Sign up to be included by sending a PM with your username and mailing address to the relevant organiser.
- Your Brickset ID will then be entered into a draw.
- Names will be drawn on the 1st of November.
- Within a day or two of the draw, everyone who entered will be PMed with the name and address of the person they have been assigned to buy a gift for.
- Purchase a gift, adhering to the cost guidelines.
- Send the gift, keeping in mind that it should arrive in time for Christmas.
- If all goes according to plan, everybody will receive their gift before Christmas!

The closing date for signing up to the 2017 Brickset Secret Santa is midnight (GMT) on the 31st of October.

The exchange is divided between the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, North America and Australasia in the hope of keeping postage costs to a minimum. Do let us know if you would like to join in but are elsewhere in the world as we will be happy to accommodate most additions.

So, if you would like to join in, simply send a message with your shipping address and wanted list (or a link to your wanted list on the main Brickset site) to the relevant contact in your area.

United Kingdom @snowhitie
North America - @CapnRex101
Continental Europe and Republic of Ireland - @piratemania7
Australia and New Zealand - @cmrt1014

You can check last year's thread to get some inspiration by looking over the enormous range of gifts given in 2016. As you can see there is a lot of fun to be had, so join us and share some Christmas cheer with fellow Brickset members!

Great, the entries are already coming in, 8 so far.

Quick addition, when you share your wishlist, don't just copy and paste the weblink when you are looking at it, because that will show 'my collection', e.g. https://brickset.com/sets/mycollection-wanted

The way to go about it is you go to 'my sets', then to 'sets wanted' and then click 'share', this will give you a link to send to me, e.g. https://brickset.com/sets/wantedby-Snowhitie

If you are happy with whatever please add a line to that effect, just so I know you didn't forget to add any info.

And in all you enthusiasm, don't forget to add your address, I don't want to just collate the info from last year, because people might have moved ;)

    Keep them coming in all!

Looking at last year's SS the gifts look fantastic. A lot look much more expensive than £15 however :-)
  • snowhitiesnowhitie Member Posts: 3,078
@TheFew if you hunt for deals or keep free poly's etc back during the year, £15 can stretch a long way... depends a bit off course about what your Santee wishes for :)

Most definitely in. Always great fun. @TheFew, you will find that a lot of thought often goes into this and people will have put stuff away especially for this. In any case it's Christmas so there may be a little bit of festive rule breaking! I've never seen any complaints.

Last year was my first year, and I was overwhelmed by the generosity and bargain hunting of some of the people on here. I resigned to try harder this year to put some things aside for my Santee (depending on what they liked - Galidor fans may be out of luck unfortunately). So hopefully this time I'll be better prepared.

I reckon that no matter what is sent, the receiver will be happy to be part of this whole thing (I know I was) and if I was another first timer, I world just try to be thoughtful and not worry about the price (apart from the recommended value). I hope this helps people.

I missed out last year for the first time in a long time. The postage costs in Switzerland are so expensive (more than the present price!) that it seems hardly worth it. When I was in the UK, I loved the secret Santa. I really do miss it. I'll miss out this year. May be next year when I can take my pressie to the UK to post and receive one there as well.

Enjoy the Secret Santa - I'll be eagerly watching this thread!

As usual, I've signed up. Maybe somebody will be able to top the uniqueness of the gift I received last year?

I must admit, my interest in LEGO has been waning this year but hopefully this might just inject me with enough enthusiasm to get back into it properly again. And give me an excuse to call Christmas Day "Brickmas Day" of course!

Say, how are the numbers of signups looking for each region so far? Seems like this year might just be the biggest in terms of numbers, but I'm curious to know.
  • snowhitiesnowhitie Member Posts: 3,078
@TheOneVeyronian UK is going strongly halfway through the month, already 27 entries.

    Keep em coming!

Sounds like fun! 'Tis better to give than to receive and it'll be cool to share the Christmas spirit with fellow bricksetters! :) Besides it'll be nice to actually open some lego on christmas... most of my family refuses to but it for me for some reason lol

19 in North America at the moment.

Not bad but I think we can do better so if anyone has been sitting on the fence then be sure to sign up before the deadline!
