2018 Modular Rumours

Only the previous 4 modulars were released on January 1st.  Prior to that, some came out in March, May, September and October.  I wouldn't be that surprised if they pushed back the date to allow production for more UCS MF's and the "new" Taj Mahal.
  • emilewskiemilewski Member Posts: 482
^ perhaps they did...but that would be dumb in my opinion as there is much more demand (and therefore profit) to be had with a new modular in volume sales than either of those.
  • natro220natro220 Member Posts: 545

Without having the numbers in front of me, something tells me both the UCS MF and the re-released Taj Mahal each have greater profit margins than a new modular would.  A new modular would have a substantial overhead cost for design and development.  The Taj Mahal, being a straight re-release, would therefore make more profit per unit sold.

With the price of the UCS MF, even with the "Disney tax", I wouldn't be surprised if each MF sold was like selling 5 modulars.  There's no reason LEGO wouldn't prioritize those two sets over a new modular and push back the release to March - the modular series fan base will still buy it and they likely wouldn't lose much in sales.

Maybe they won't release any information on the new modular until 2018 because it is an actual Lego retail store modular for the 60th anniversary.........

I doubt it makes much difference whether they make that extra bit of money when modulars are released in January or March.

I don’t know about you but I can wait a little longer. I still have yet to build Assembly Square and haven’t bought Ninjago City.

My friend told me the "hint" looks like a joke. He saw the picture. He told me the type of the new building has already appeared in the previous sets, which means not a police station and not a train station... No further details....
    I guess it wont be cinema/bank/town hall. Maybe a grocer/a cafe/a restaurant?
He is not allowed to go further. I tried...sorry...

So could it be less of a ‘new building’ per say, but more of the ‘new modular’ and a re-release?
  • playwellplaywell Member Posts: 2,330
^ If that is true I would hope for a hotel.

    That would be nice.

CC is pretty outdated not only because it has no interior, so a new hotel with restaurant makes more sense than a re-release of CC.

But Green Grocer is a good re-release candidate with just small updates later on :)

Will they launch another mini modular, like 10230?

New design building. Not a re-release.

Is that a boxer? So maybe fitness on second floor :) Might as well be a corner building.

Is it just me or is there a gap between it and Assembly Square? That would give it a rather small footprint on the upper levels.

I can see stairs there leading to fitness centre on first floor :)

Aww they've stopped the classic faces! :(

Another car too... shame about that. The building looks nice though.

    Tread carefully.

The image comes from a Chinese website that features a clone brand’s logo in the same article.
Take the news with a pinch of salt, though I should mention that, if it is legit, that I’m perfectly contented with it. Quite charming, actually.

Big fan!  Might have to finally buy the Assembly Square since I didn’t luck out with an invite to the Inside Tour this year.

    this fuels the speculation!
so many questions, firstly is it just me or is the actual building (excluding the staircase) only 26 studs wide? and also dont the 2 floors behind the 'diner' sign seem a little basic for a modular?
    whatever the answers its intriguing
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
It is time I start building assembly square. I love Lego Modulars! I like the move towards unique heads. You can always buy classic heads without much thought, but choosing facial expressions is an art that I rather not deal with.

Its from a Chinese social media. An lego fans group's account. Words in the logo means: Brick news....

First impression is meh! Not what I expected or hoped for. From the photo it doesn't look like it fits well with Assembly Square, plus you don't see it on the line up at the bottom with the others. Plus why the change from the Classic faces. I have my doubts about it but could be legit.

My first impression of this set is that I love it! I was initially disappointed when the diner didn't make it through the review phase in Ideas but I am more than happy to settle for this set. After seeing Baby Driver and really loving the movie, I really wanted to see a diner somewhere in the lego line up. The colors for this set really pop which is something I really love and want to see from the modular series. The teal and pink work great with each other and really drive the diner feeling home.

A small additional detail that I really like is that the first level reminds me of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks:

I like the idea of a modular redesign of 6390 Main Street. With that we'd get a mechanic's shop, and a hotel that is under construction (and a popcorn stand of course!). The hotel would have to be pretty small to fit a 16x32 baseplate, so maybe they could release another brownstone type building that is being constructed.
In the regard to a mechanic shop, I think it would be cool to receive more of the old style cars. I am in no way a fan of the car in the Palace Cinema but I do really enjoy the design of the fire truck in the Fire Brigade. Beyond doing MOCs, the sets that comes to mind that fits the style/scale would be #10200 and #7682. Would be cool to see some more vehicles.
My sole complaint would be the vehicle in this set. It just doesn't really do it for me. The proportions seem all weird. They really did a great job with the fire truck in the Fire Brigade but the two cars in the Palace Cinema and this set just fall short. Nevertheless, I do enjoy the color decision to have made it pink. Who knows though, maybe opinions will change when official pictures come out.

Will have to see better picture of the car for final judgement. With the fins, guitar, and hair It has me thinking of a pink Cadillac and Elvis. Hope it's real and not a Chinese knock off, but if it's I may have to get the instructions and make my own out of real LEGO.

Something seems a little off on this one for some reason. I certainly won’t have any complaints if this does turn out to be legit, because I love all the modulates, but doesn’t it seem a little strange that they’ve suddenly abandoned the classic Lego heads? Hopefully we’ll find out soon with an official announcement :-)

up to now the modular have been 1920's-30's.
that if real look's 1960's. if real maybe the next 10 years will be 1960's themed?

I agree. Also I don't like that they wasted bricks on a car. But we'll just have to wait until the official announcement I guess.

Huh... maybe I can MOC this into a service station to go with the pile of City gas pumps I have.

As an aside, I don't mind the unusualness of this set.  Just strikes me as an odd choice.

The modulars have never been based on one specific place or time, that's only ever been fan speculation. Green Grocer had floor-length coolers with glass doors, something that (as far as I know) didn't exist in the 20s or 30s.

I think this is a corner building, seeing as the glass on the ground floor is rounded to the side (on the left) and because of the gap between the new set and AS. I really like the look of it. And maybe they thought: after 10 years of using the original LEGO faces, it's enough..? Time for a completely new style of buildings and minifigs.
  • CaptainRogersCaptainRogers Member Posts: 869
Doesn't seem to be a corner just because I see a staircase on the side there. I think the wall of the diner does round that way in keeping with the style, though.

You can color me excited. I'm super happy to see a distinctly different architectural style incorporated into the modular theme. I hope that as the years go by, Lego continues to explore new styles and keeps things interesting.

Yeah, but isn't that a stair well between the Diner and the Assembly square building?
All in all it is interesting as this would be the first mod without the standard smiley face.
