Are the Detective's Office and Palace Cinema due for retirement anytime soon?

I know someone who always fawns over the idea of them, but hasn't pulled the trigger, and next year may be the year I just gift them.

I would hope for a museum. It could contain a lot of different bricks from different themes, e.g. egyptian mummies, knights armor, etc.

I would imagine that Lego probably have a long list of potential ideas for modulars, which gets added to all the time. Each year they'll most likely get the team together and go through the list, throwing ideas around, before settling on the best one.

I was in the same boat. I bought both of them this year and I love them! 
I had a feeling at least one would be retired so that's why I finally made the purchases. And I gotta say I did not ever regret it.

I'd also be happy with a comic book store, music/record shop, classic firehouse, Grand Central style train station, book shop, there's so much I'd like to see still.......

With a museum idea you could tie it in with 60th anniversary and have older themes on display. Might be a good hook for it.

I don't think a supermarket would be too out of line.  There have been a ton of new food pieces made since Green Grocer came out, not to mention the improved design of the modulars themselves.  It wouldn't need to be a re-release, they can create something really cool and different.  As long as it looks different than the Green Grocer, I don't see why it couldn't be on the same street.  Competition is good.

sorry jamie, i completely forgot about 2018 modular. ive made a start, tbh its basically some old creator buildings cobbled together, its last minute I doubt any one will notice, i just need to finish half the top floor and then ill get the prototype over to you this afternoon so you can do the video and take all the credit as usual

you know how people say that when you have "no news" that it is good news?
well when it comes to lego news that is all bull.
with black friday around the bend i think we looking at the start of next month now before we get any news on the modular. me not happy about that.

For me more interesting fact is how Lego got so much better in protecting the secrets til the very last moment. It's amazing, not too many leaks this year.

Too bad the modular is THE SET targeted to support the natural lower sales after Christmas season, would really love to get it before the Holidays every year :(

This is just my thought (no inside source here)- but is it possible that the normal release schedule will be modified in 2018 for anniversary products?  Or do we think that will mainly take place in 2019?
