Those images came from Brickshelf so I don't think we can read too much into their appearance in the database.

Having said that, I think there is a good chance of a Modular Building being re-released at some point. LEGO is evidently listening to fans given the announcement of #10256 Taj Mahal so would surely wish to respond to perhaps the most requested re-releases of all.

Oh Boy, Caffe Corner will be finally mine....

We should get going a Caffe Corner/green grocer rumors topic. Imagine all the spamming and the non-sense discussion that will be going on.
    - will it have sausages?
    - will it have explosions on the box?
    - will it be 3k pieces, but same size as the previous?
    etc etc

I guess now is a very important time, especially since the Taj Mahal is a true re-release unlike the new and improved UCS MF.

Will all those fans that said they want the Taj Mahal really go ahead and buy it now they can? If not, then it could put an end to any further re-releases based on fan support. If they do, then I expect to see many more.

If they re-release old modulars, I think they have to be careful. If they are extras in addition to new ones, I guess most AFOLs won't care too much as the series will develop as it has in the past. If they are instead of new ones, then it is more problematic.

    Thanks for the clarification.

^Yea, I think the demand for the Falcon signaled to TLG that they could test the waters with a true re-release.  Doubt they will have an updated version or re-release of a modular right after announcing the Taj Mahal without even getting sales data from it yet.  Also, a few people have mentioned it won't be a re-release, although I'd really like to know their sources.

I was told by knowledgeable store staff that Taj Mahal is one of their most requested sets, and that they could have sold hundreds.

I expressed some surprise at this, as I couldn't see why - it's not like it's another UCS MF or anything.

I was told that it's since David Beckham was shown building it. Then I understood. Everyone wants the set that Beckham built.

For this reason, I suspect the Taj Mahal re-release is a bit of a one-off, and that we won't see re-releases of any Modulars.

Unless David Beckham builds one ;)

I'm not sure if it was here or Eurobricks, but someone knew of the Taj Mahal re-release back in April / May.

Now he has tweeted the Disney Castle, I wonder if the Taj Mahal is still so high on people's wants lists. And he finished that one, whereas he didn't finish the TM. He also bought Tower Bridge, so maybe that is why it has been available for so long.

If the Cafe Corner is re-released, I’d fully expect them to add in finished interiors similar to later modulars. If they do that, would be nice if they also created an “add-on” pack for those of us with an original to add in the furniture/floors ourselves.

A few pieces in the Taj Mahal will have been updated since the original came out (thinking the 1 x 2 x 2 panels for one). Or perhaps they've re-tooled the moulds so that it is a genuine copy. Until we see one we cannot know for sure.
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark UK / KLMember Posts: 3,449
^ Perhaps, but that hasn't affected the actual build at all.

Thanks for the info @Paperballpark ; that makes sense. Though there is always the slight possibility they could reintroduce those elements but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Also, I agree with @flord I'd much rather see a new design and if they did do a rerelease, I would hope they would do it along with a new one rather than taking up a slot for the year.

I have no intentions of picking up any re-released products especially if they are identical to the originals. In fact I'd be glad its happened and that would lower the cost of the original copies so I can pick those up instead when it's at a feasible time for me. I don't expect them to drop by much but it could be closer to half the current value and that some what makes it easier. In terms of which Modular Buildings I still have the interest to pick up it would be #10185 - Green Grocer and #10197 - Fire Brigade, that's if we don't count the desire to pick them all up.

You cannot compare Modular sets to non-Modular sets :-) . That's like comparing apples with oranges. Wait a minute, that's Green Grocer ...

Although I would like a Green Grocer as much as anyone, I would be almost equally happy to see the reaction when Lego re-releases Market Street first.

^ I have been thinking that the whole time when people are shouting for updated cafe corner. the new article at the brickset homepage about rereleases make me see (a part of) Assembly Square as a remake of Café Corner.
I've never got the chance of buying Café Corner and I'm not interested in the original one, nor a rerelease as I already have a nice café in Assembly Square now. What I'd wish LEGO would produce is a hotel, as the original CC did have (an empty) one.
  • LegoPondswaldLegoPondswald The NetherlandsMember Posts: 45
Have you guys not seen the left side of Assembly Square? That is your Cafe Corner update.
That is exactly what I've been thinking the whole time. I don't think they're gonna re-release something, since they kind of already did that with Assembly Square.
I think (and hope!) they'll release something new. I would absolutely love a police station, a hotel or something that I wouldn't think of. Also, as a journalist I would love to see a newsroom. But maybe that's just me.

Assembly Square paid homage to Cafe Corner and Green Grocer.  It is not a re-release of them.

I defined the difference between a rerelease and a remake 10 days ago in the "What's the next set to be remade" thread.  I was responding to @LegoPondswald more than you.  I said re-release because that's the word she used.  Either way, Assembly Square is neither a remake, direct re-release, or revised re-release of Green Grocer or Cafe Corner.  It simply pays homage to them.

What makes you say that? I'm honestly just curious, not trying to be antagonistic.

There are at least two parts in that set - the doors being one of them - which have been changed in the years since, which means that it's actually impossible for Lego to do a straight re-release with the elements available now.

Certainly in the case of the doors, the increase in height from 5 bricks to 6 bricks means that a lot of the building would have to be redesigned.

I think Jamie Berard was once asked about it and said pretty much the above - that a re-release couldn't be done.

Besides, people only want it because they can't have it. If they could have it, a lot wouldn't want it anymore, because quite honestly, when you compare it with any modular released in the last 5 years, it's completely rubbish. There are many more parts available now, with many more techniques, and holding a 10 year old modular up against a new one would not end favourably for Cafe Corner.
This. The Cafe Corner was constantly on sale when in production and now goes for a ton in box now because not many were sold back then (and the little thing of 10 years since is release). Market street was also a model not loved and never really put on sale.. it just went away with little warning, which is why that set now goes for a fortune, especially in box. Any argument that such models would sell like hotcakes is silly as well IMO. Just because the UCS falcon is back ordered now does not mean anything. It is SW, and SW will always sell and was very much worth it to LEGO to redo the set, same if the redid star destroyer models and the DSII. If anything I think the Taj Mahal is more of a 'put your toe into the water' to see if other such landmarks (like Eiffel tower and Statue of Liberty) would be worth redoing as well, my guess is they will be.

Fair enough, but I think that's close enough to a re-release.

Assembly Square is not a re-release of Cafe Corner. Part of it is a cafe, that is as close as it gets. Otherwise it is a completely different model.

If Assembly Square is a re-release of Cafe Corner, then Assault on Hoth is a re-release of the UCS Snowspeeder.

Back to the topic, I would favor a health care thing with pharmacy, doctor's offices (dentist etc), and drug store. Alternatively hospital with ambulance and reception, office, patient rooms and surgery specials. Just regular size base plate, no extra size, and reasonably priced. Way to early for re-releases in my view.
  • CCCCCC UKMember Posts: 17,799
They've done the dentist already so I doubt he will reappear any time soon, but a doctor's surgery / clinic / pharmacy might be good. Something the size of FB.

Even though Assembly Square is not a re-release of Cafe Corner, the cafe portion of that performs a similar enough function in people's cities (and has a similar enough aesthetic) that I can't seem them releasing it and another cafe-focused set back to back. It'd be like if they released a full modular building of a laundromat, with a similar overall style to the one in the Brick Bank set, the year after they released the Brick Bank.

The other thing about modular buildings that really sets them apart from things like the Star Wars Ultimate Collectors Series or the Creator Expert Landmarks series is that they are entirely original designs. Their appeal doesn't come from being based on some specific source material they can't stray too far from. So there's not as much incentive to do a straight or updated re-release when they could create a totally new design that fills more or less the same niche, like what they did with this year's carousel.

On that note, maybe at some point LEGO could do a full hotel as a modular building? The hotel is the part of Cafe Corner that they haven't really revisited in any subsequent sets. And it's also something that would benefit greatly from an actual interior rather than just a sign.

After AS that is wider than normal, they could release a modular that is narrower, but with twice the amount of floors. It would bring a variety in shape and fix the width problem people are having.

It may be grasping at straws, but the new Hi-Res photos of 10182 on Brickset show that one of the MF hairpieces from the original (4221601 - Hermione's wig) is replaced with a new design.

But unfortunately it's quite visible that it still has no interior, so...

I chose the word update carefully. I just can't imagine them doubling down on yellow/white awning/corner coffee shops that have very similar signage.

Swapping out a hairpiece is an easier ask from a cost perspective than designing a full interior.  Doesn't answer the question of the out of production doors and windows, but who knows?

Oh my, that is a good catch. Also, I don’t think we’ve never seen photos of Cafe Corner and Green Grocer together like that without Market Street.

    I think there’s maybe a re-release of both coming!

The pics with the ponytail hairpiece are as old as the Green Grocer itself! Compare with this pic of the back of the Green Grocer's box, uploaded to Brickshelf in 2008: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3031034 The same minifigure appears with a ponytail in one of the Cafe Corner's outdoor seats. So this is almost certainly just a long-standing error, rather than any kind of foreshadowing.

I'm a bit burned out with Modular Buildings at this point. They stand out when there are only a few of them.

For me, 80% of their charm is in their front facade. That means, for non-corner buildings, I just build the front and topmost exterior.
