It is evident judging from this picture that when you detach the pool-hall building with the detective's office on the first floor from the barbershop building, you do not need many if any extra bricks at all.
The bricks present in the set probably will suffice. Moreover there are hardly any internal wall bricks here, and in so far as these bricks are now part of any internal walls, most of those will become part of the external wall without having to change all that much, even though you will still have to redesign plenty of other bits and pieces quite extensively in order to customize it all to your own liking.

B.t.w. the PS set does not contain any internal wall either; each floor is pretty much a box with four exterior walls that carry the modular stackable construction.
Next to that there is slightly more depth (from front to back) to the two PS buildings compared to the DO building. DO has lengthwise 10 studs exposed behind the blue building, and six and eight studs in length of bare baseplate exposed behind the pool-hall, and more pavement in front of the building. So the PS set buildings have more interior space, have a bigger 'footprint' on the baseplates, and all that with less bricks.
Ooh, and one more thing, contrary to what you wrote the reddish brown family house building from the PS set does contain furniture, and a lavatory (though without a sink), so it is not entirely empty as you claimed.
Paperballpark, dude are you out of your league?   ;-P

    ps.
Addendum: correction; DO does also contain two staircase elements just like PS.

    pps.
Now I really want to know what the next modular building for 2018 will be!

People seem to forget the house with the Pet Shop was virtually empty as it was supposed to be being refurbished/redecorated.
  • piratemania7piratemania7 Member Posts: 2,146
I see it as there is the Pet Shop but then there is also the idea of two separate buildings just not necessarily side by side.  Yes it creates an additional wall but that wall can be made up of several 1x6 bricks and smaller - an overall small price on a modular. I would like to see more of this style which is interchangeable.  Perhaps if the next release were two smaller builds it would be fitting.

Yes, it would also make it more easy to set up a nice city layout that has more variation than can be achieved by simply lining up all 32-width modulars.

Said it before, but would love another set like Pet Shop with two buildings and a small shop. It also solves the problem for LEGO if they do not want to make a large shop, maybe a small butcher (or other such small) shop with living space above, and another townhouse type building. Id say a Hardware shop would fit, but I think LEGO has enough tools and things like lawnmower models to justify a large store floor print for that

My wallet might hate me, but I wouldn't mind getting two modules a year. A regular 32x32 modular in January, and a half 16x32 modular in june/july.

^ While that would be lovely, my wallet AND my city real estate space would both hate that.

@Paperballpark and @TheBigLegoski, you both make fairly compelling arguments.  I've enjoyed reading this debate.

Although, both the Pet Shop and Detective Office are similar in size, I feel like there is much more detail with DO.  Modulars can't really have detail on any exterior walls except the front (unless it's a corner) because of how they are intended to be displayed.  Splitting DO into two buildings that can't be separated allows for much more detail in the middle.  However, it does seem to be a bit smaller than the Pet Shop, space-wise.

I do feel having two walls in the middle of the Pet Shop is somewhat of a waste.  I really don't like the smaller rooms that make up the Pet Shop, Detective Office, and Assembly Square.  I prefer the larger rooms inside Palace Cinema, Fire Brigade, Grand Emporium, and the Town Hall.  Either way is fine for me though.  I really only display the buildings and don't remove the sections to view and play with.  Split modulars wouldn't disappoint me, but if we do get one I hope it is bigger than the Pet Shop.  It seems like the designers are pressured to make modulars with extensive detail viewable from the outside and we won't get more buildings that can be split apart because of this reason.

Throwing in my vote for another pair of 16x32 modulars.  I'm constantly shifting around and reorganizing the streetscape, just because I enjoy the variety.  That's my version of "playing" with the modular lineup.  A couple more 16x32s would be great as far as flexibility is concerned.

Looking forward to this announcement and the upcoming holiday season so I can get some time off work to develop my 31050, 31065, and 70912 MOD/MOCs

I am also voting for a pair of 16x32s.  I love having the ability to break up the PS and put them in-between the other 32x32 modulars to allow for frequent re-arrangement of the street-scape.

    Any rumors on announcement date?
  • PapaBearPapaBear Member Posts: 665
The price of modulars has risen from $150 to $160 and then to $170 for the Brick Bank (excluding Assembly Square because that was an anniversary set).  I think the price increase is almost necessary to get the right amount of play, room, and detail that I think a modular should have.  Brick Bank to me seems to have got it just right.

What price tag do people expect the new modular to have?

I would be super surprised if it's not a corner considering we've had 4 years now without one.  What I REALLY want to see is some sort of deli or apartment building or hotel that could be designed as an inward corner so I can line the modulars along the walls of a room.
Inward corner is a great idea,it is kinda just what I need for my layout and I have been thinking about this as well. It seems difficult to make, inward corners are not the common irl (at least not where I live). It would also have to be a very big set in the end with a really large room inside and still a rather small outside, just to be able to line it up nicely. Don't think this will ever happen. Best you can do is use a corner building in the corner and then 2 corner buildings on both sides and then work outwards from there with terraced buildings. Ninjago city or even something like tower of orthanc is good for this.
  • PmhPmh Member Posts: 128

maybe a city mansion would be nice. There is not enough living space in general in modular city, they all have to commute from the regular city sub urbs.

would not mind a remake of café corner,if updated with interior. 2 buildings like petshop I do like,as long as the first and 2nd floor are not filled with functions that make little sense like assembly square. My favorit for that would probably be something like a bookstore and then 2 apartments above for 1 building and a coffee shop/fast food shop with 2 apartments above in the other one.

Not a fan of a butcher and I seriously doubt lego would ever make a butcher set. School I am not a fan of either, museum would be nice as a 32x32 set

I think it's really odd we haven't heard a single peep by now. Assembly Square was announced like October 15th or so... And normally leaks appear before the official announcement. Perhaps it's time to entertain the idea that there might not be one released on 2018, or at least on January 1st (perhaps it will be delayed a few months).

But Detective's Office was announced mid-November. I think its a bit early to be spreading doom and gloom!

Prize* for the first person to build a viable modular building out of the parts in #75192 (plus a baseplate).

Since the AS was "big", I'd guess that Lego would go back to "normal" size. I hope that they break the "2 for 1" pattern (DO and barber shop, Bank and Laundry) and concentrate on a single, detailed building.  A service station (with a couple vehicles like a tow truck and a sedan or roadster) would be a nice addition. It could be something inspired by the vintage sets that had the HO scale cars in them.

Ok, forgot about that. I wasn't collecting modulars then - not for lack of wanting though!

I was thinking that perhaps Lego let Ninjago City kind of fill that position this year (and I know it's not a modular, just modular-compatible), and 2017 has been a year for largr releases. But I still hope for a modular.

^Suspect TLG are waiting for the UCS Falcon hype to die down a little before they announce another large set.

^ Too late, they've already announced this 3,444 piece set for release later this month.

With Ninjago City, the Millennium Falcon, the Joker Manor, the GB Firehouse and Assembly Square still on the shelves at the end of this year, will they put back any modular for a few months and release something in their first quarter of 2018 to help with sales then?
  • dmcc0dmcc0 Member Posts: 778
^Given that the announcement of the Joker Manor got lost a little (IMO) in the hype surrounding the MF hype, my previous post may not be too far off.

Announcing another big set when TLG are struggling to get larger sets like the MF and the Saturn V actually in stock might also raise a few eyebrows.

Is there any history of releasing a big set with little or no prior announcement?  Guessing in this day and age that might be a bit difficult as it's bound to get leaked in advance.

Make what you will of this but there is some discussion going on about an image that has surfaced on reddit/facebook.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/78fu6n/there_appears_to_be_an_image_tease_of_the_2018/?st=J95RA70Z&sh=64324af0

If it isn’t fake, could be looking at a March release of some kind of creator set.

  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,270
As a spoiler for others, the image is a computer-generated picture of a blank box, with the LEGO logo and 'Creator' written on it. Set number #10256, launching March. Described as 'Creator Expert'

Given the set number, I'm tempted to think that it's a cancelled set which would have been due THIS March.

  • sid3windrsid3windr Member Posts: 1,460
#10256 was (as Brickset also links) thought to be the set number for the Carousel which turned out to be #10257. So I'm fully on the "cancelled set" train and this will not be the new modular.

Image as linked also says 2016...

I like the idea of a modular redesign of 6390 Main Street. With that we'd get a mechanic's shop, and a hotel that is under construction (and a popcorn stand of course!). The hotel would have to be pretty small to fit a 16x32 baseplate, so maybe they could release another brownstone type building that is being constructed.

In the regard to a mechanic shop, I think it would be cool to receive more of the old style cars. I am in no way a fan of the car in the Palace Cinema but I do really enjoy the design of the fire truck in the Fire Brigade. Beyond doing MOCs, the sets that comes to mind that fits the style/scale would be #10200 and #7682. Would be cool to see some more vehicles.

Possibly, using the new parts used in Jokers Mansion/Funland from the Batman Movie range. How it would be powered up the incline remains to be seen...

im going to sound boring but id like to see a train station although i cant see this happening in 32x32 layout

Maybe Ninjago City is this year's modular? Nah! That cannot be, right?!
B.t.w. What is the next re-release? One of the older modulars such as Grand Emporium, or Fire Brigade!?
I completely fail to see the appeal of the Taj Mahal (never did & still don't), but I would not mind either of both mentioned modulars (GE & FB) being re-released. Or the Green Grocer for that matter, perhaps with a few updates/improvements.
Perhaps there won't be a new modular this year. TLG is releasing a crazy amount of new sets this year, which keeps increasing every year it seems.
    ps.
Any way, I still stand by my wish expressed earlier here on this thread for another set like the Pet-shop with two separate buildings on 16X32 plates. Give us a butcher-shop TLG!
    pps.
Still need to get hold of the brick bank modular too. Too many sets on my wish-list etc.

If anything, the fact that LEGO is still announcing sets for this year should make it less of a surprise that we haven’t heard about next year’s modular. No point in worrying that there might not be one.

Dooh! Indeed you are right, though it was already released November last year (2016).
    What was I thinking?
    @Aanchir
Well, suppose they don't release another one next year, in a sense that will be a worry less too.  ;-)
