Quick question, why do Chima heads have face prints? Which is supposed to be their face? The animal head or the head underneath It???

The faces are the sculpted animal heads. The inclusion of separate face prints underneath are primarily so that the head as a whole can have more print colors (the prints for the head plus the prints for the eyes), and also so each character can have two slightly different expressions.

The way LEGO's printing machines are set up, they have 12 print stages that can each print one color of ink on one surface, and the part can be rotated between stages. However, for a part like the Chima crocodile head sculpt, it needs printing on three surfaces, which would mean only around four colors per surface. This is where the printed minifigure head comes in. It only needs printing on the front and back, and it doesn't necessarily need the same print colors as the head sculpt that goes over it. It results in a lot more options for the graphic designers.

Thanks. But which is the characters face then? The lego head or the sculpted animal head?

The sculpted head and standard minifigure head together make up the character's face, if that makes any sense. In story, they're not wearing animal-shaped helmets or anything like that.

I think they printed a face on the head so that when kids lost the sculpted head they wouldn't be left with a boring faceless minifig.

I wish the Simpsons figures had been implemented the same way: printed minifig heads underneath molded helmet heads.
