As expensive as this set is, my bet is that it will hard to get a hold of for many months. 1 Oct will be a feeding frenzy and Lego.com will crash as usual. The website will not stabilize until the initial stock is sold out which will be within the first hour. Lego would be foolish not to have a 1 per customer limit. Much like the current Saturn IV set, it will have limited availability for the near future due to demand. The situation will be made worse with Christmas just around the corner. My guess is that it will be scarce until well into spring. All these factors will make it a re-sellers dream and I'd bet it is an easy flip for at least $1000.00 for while.
The 1-per-customer rule is great in theory, except the biggest scalpers will have 1000 minions with 1000 email accounts set to buy as soon as the set goes on sale, just like they do with the Black Friday sales. If I remember correctly, #10697 had a limit of 2 last year on Walmart's Black Friday sale, but Toy Wiz was listing a lot more than 2 for sale, at huge markups, on the Walmart website within hours of the start of the sale. I missed that deal in 2015 and had to wait for the 2016 sale because I will not pay scalpers.

I'm under the impression that VAT gets charged consistently throughout a country, so everyone in that country pays the same VAT and it gets listed as part of the retail price because of that. In the US, I can drive to Delaware and buy a set at the LEGO MSRP, which has no tax. Is there anywhere in the UK to buy new LEGO sets without paying VAT?

prices in the uk are required by law to include VAT.
this is not a chose LEGO make. to sell there item in the uk the VAT has to be show added to the Price show in a shop. this is called the RRP "recommended retail price"
it is only the recommended retail price, as shop's are not required to sell at the price.
however what ever price the shop sell the set at. the shop will have the 20% for UK VAT. as part of that listed price.

some year back now. the uk vat use to be 17.5%.
there is a rant about how the 20% was only for a small number of years. but i'll not go in to that today.
before the jump to 20% we had 1 year at 15%. "to help make people spend more."
for that 1 year prices in shop's drop by that 2.5%. most shop Just removed 2.5% at the till. when that year was over all price when up by 5% again prices in shop had the now 5% added to them over time you when from seeing stuff for 105.00 back to 100.00.
i know i dont explain this well. but i hope you got the idea.
as it is we know we paying VAT but most of us dont need to thing about VAT. the shop's do all that for us.

^ VAT is charged uniformly here. Unless you are buying as a business expense and either pay a ex-VAT price or reclaim it.

I agree it is best to quote the pre tax US price. That is why when comparing to UK prices, it should be on an equal basis.

I am not someone who isn't going to be buying the set (Ninjago City is another story in the future) but it seems to have figure so from
all eras, I saw a BB-8 floating by.

More like $1,200 just to make $50-75. Discounts, taxes, eBay-like fee, shipping and etc included.

You're all complaining about price while I'm complaining about if the size will be the same

If the set is really priced at $799 usd, I wont really mind as long as it has the piece count to justify it, and not just a bunch of 1x1 round plates :P

The equal basis would be UK price including VAT vs US price plus local sales tax, because that is what people actually pay.

Most people in the UK have to pay the VAT, just like most people in the US have to pay local sales tax, which varies from ZERO to just under 10%. The MSRP published by LEGO for the US market does not include tax because US taxes are not consistent. Five states do not charge any sales tax at all, so in those states the MSRP really is the price being paid, inclusive of tax.

    Using your earlier example
Our £600 is really £500+£100 VAT - so that's £600 ($774) out of pocket. Whereas in the USA it is $800 plus tax. That is about 3% less for LEGO if they sell here compared to if they sell in the USA in a state with no sales tax for $800, or 11% less than if sold in Tennessee for $880.

ps - sorry for the rant, been going through the nearly same conversation with a customer of mine for the last 4 hours...

Some bloke on ebay earlier this week managed to sell his Bricklinked used UCS Falcon (complete with black rigging, black and grey arial pieces, other substitutions and non printed radar dish) for £715. I assume the guy who bought it is gonna spend a week absolutely over the moon, then a VERY long time feeling VERY gutted.

If Macron talks about the new MF, everyone will be crazy about it. (though no one will understand if he talks about the MF or about a jar jar bust) on the flip side there is a high risk then it will leave many people disappointed.

I really hope Lego avoids leaks. I really want to wait to see it on the official announcement day. Problem is that I'm sure they've already began producing them. Some factory worker in Mexico will probably leak it.

Thats possible, if there is a leak I would hope it would only come a couple days before the announcement.

I was thinking about that myself.  Would certainly explain the size and potential piece count.

But, the thing is way bigger than the MF, so scale between the two wouldn't really work (if it was expected to put the MF into the cargo bay like in the movie).

Bandai is releasing a 1/72 scale Millennium Falcon model for $400 USD. I guess there's a bigger market than we thought for detailed, huge, and expensive Falcons.

However much I love Lego, which is a lot, I find it astounding that everyone is getting excited about spending 800 bucks on a load of plastic. I wonder how many stickers there will be.

Tennessee doesn't have state income tax on wages earned. They do have Sales tax which I think is the highest state in in the country around 10% on most things you buy.
I would take a 10% sales tax with 0% income tax every day and twice in Sunday

It depends whether you equate it from the consumer side or lego's side.

The consumer side is very difficult, as of course, tax goes towards government, which in turn (in theory) gets spent on citizens. So we get extra benefits from spending, not just the sets we buy. We have had the long debate about taxes and free healthcare and so on in the past.

Anyone else noticed the mood shift from frivolous, carefree and jokey to sombre, serious and concerned since the teaser trailer dropped?

I was hoping for a tedious, repetitive in-depth discussion regarding pieces that could clearly seen in the trailer, extensive freeze-frame analysis and Photoshop manipulation of the images to reveal speculative unseen details.
Instead we seem to have the joy and rapture of a tax and pricing debate.

No offence meant to those who're clearly concerned with an admittedly important issue.

A couple of months ago I picked up #75059 - Sandcrawler during it's last days on the shelve for the full RRP. Since the announcement I've mentioned it looks boring and has too many studs exposed and that it's just a brown blob after viewing pictures. Knowing LEGO Star Wars prices do increase I didn't want to take that risk as it's one of those UCS models that I did have my eye on regardless of the negative comments I gave it.

Now owning it in person such I'm huge fan of it. The building experience with the heavy mixture of System and Technic elements was just incredible. Additionally having a place for every single one of those small tools and creates that can also easily be removed for play was just fantastic! I'd happily not own any other LEGO Star Wars products as long as own the Sandcrawler, in my opinion Tatooine is the first thing I relate to Star Wars, it has ever since I first encountered Star Wars. That said I'm going to start purchasing more Star Wars, Ultimate Collector's Series products in the near future given the nature of how advance the building is and the incredible details; forget the Minifigures and the retail sets. I over looked them before now I'm looking forward to my next UCS model. I can understand people being frustrated with the rumoured RRP for the new Millennium Falcon but if it's better than the Sandcrawler I can't complain, right?

I wouldn't worry about it, a lot of big release threads get this, after it's release there will probably be loads of posts about what's wrong with it, way to much money for what it is and why wasn't it done this way or that.

An assumed $800 price point for me would probably mean €800 and £750. Let's see when they change the literature from 'The Largest LEGO set ever' to 'The most expensive LEGO set..'
Everyone has a limit and for most there will be some room for negotiation (+/-10%). I'm anticipating a high cost and aim to "benefit" by purchasing at Double VIP to offset the price of future sets.
I'm not really sure I buy into the quantity vs quality argument but then I only collect Star Wars UCS sets. Perhaps if I had to choose between this and Slave 1, TIE Fighter and Snowspeeder it'd be a different story. Fortunately I don't :-D

I doubt they would do it somehow. The largest ever is a positive, the most expensive is a negative. Even though they go hand in hand with each other.

I wouldn't take too much notice in what is or is not included in the trailer. Things like the BB-8 going past is clearly a clue. But I'm not sure much should be read into the distribution of more general parts, and the lack of other parts (rigging etc). Maybe later after release someone will sit down with a parts list and work out what percentage of the set was shown and whether all the parts shown are in the set. But that is a job for someone else ...
