Not ever going to join Eurobricks, had my fill of draconian forums ruled by overbearing admins/moderators even before I joined the Halo Waypoint forums. HWP forums was why I had second thoughts a few times when I first signed up here, but I'm glad I decided to stay. In my opinion, @Huw, @Matthew & the rest of admin team do a great job of running a forum that I feel is what forums should be like.
I know it is the thing to bash EB, but I find the mods at EB to be pretty good at what they do. It is a different type of forum. It is much more MOC and building techniques and advice driven than here, but also good for information about new sets, which is kept on topic (by those _ruthless_ mods).

If you are respectful to others and to the (not that draconian) rules, there is no need to worry about being banned.

I've occasionally done google searches that have pulled up EB threads & from what I have seen, I can honestly say, it doesn't seem to be as bad as the HWP forums, or several other forums I've been on over the years, but there are definitely times that the admins/mods could handled situations better. At least no-one there is getting banned (technically just suspended until the year 2457) for necroposting to a thread (we used call it zombying a thread), it's not in the rules, but posting to a thread that hasn't been active for over a year, can get you suspended (the ridiculous thing is I wasn't the worst offender, but cause I didn't love Halo 4, I copped the ban hammer).

    Well lets have a look:

So... if I were to believe that mean-spirited or firm moderation is counter-productive or outrageous...

Who cares if someone posts a light-hearted meme or quotes a prior post or photo?

Actually, nevermind.  The mods here liked the over-explosion fake UCS MF photo.  Maybe I'm just being defensive.
  • playwellplaywell Member Posts: 2,280
These are two different things, we can have a discussion on the best level of moderation. Brickset is super light and Eurobricks is super heavy.

Now even if you think its good to have a forum be heavily moderated it doesn't mean that you think its right for a moderator to swear, be aggressive, say they will ban everyone that asks a question.

But where I did agree with @CCC is when he said this:

And in my opinion that is much better than what we have seen here recently.

Well nothing is forcing you to stay if you don't enjoy the content

That said I do agree with you. I find myself spending less and less time on these forums over the past few months  do it in large part to a lack of interesting contact and conversation

I thought about that, then I imagined what it would be like if I signed up to Mumsnet to find out what she was up to. I quickly realised that if her reaction to Brickset was anything like my reaction to Mumsnet, there's no way on earth she would risk her sanity in such a way! :-)

Yes. Doesn't stand for no shit.

[fortunately for me they're a little more tolerant in these woods]
And from what I have seen, instant permanent bans are very rare. There are nearly always warnings, and then time-out type bans where if you admit to wrong doing and agree not to do it again, then you are allowed back. I'm fine with that.

    1) Stick to the rules, not a problem.
    2) Don't stick to the rules, get a time-out, but if you agree to stick to the rules in future you are allowed back (educate about wrong doing).

That is pretty much how I treat my kids. Don't break the rules, and if you do you have to understand why you broke the rules before being allowed to continue to play.

Brickset is super light on moderation. That is part of the problem, going the other way from Eurobricks. This thread is pretty useless, for example. Most of it is completely off topic, and contains very little rumours. Lots of speculation, wants, memes, complaints, complete tangents (like this post), ... but very little on topic about rumours.

But then, that is what the brickset forums seem to be - more chat than substance, not that it is a bad thing. Just that it is different to EB where they prefer to keep off-topic chat out of the main information threads. I wouldn't want brickset forums to try to become more like eurobricks in terms of content.

That said, there are rules here that need ot be followed. For example, posting watermarked images. They get removed, and I think people get warned for it. What if that person goes on and on posting them again and again. Should they be banned? If so, is that heavy handed? If someone is clearly underage or continually posts spam, is it heavy handed to ban them? In my view no, it is for the good of the forum if they are warned and continue to do it.

  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Indeed. And as the focus of brickset is sets, when there is nothing much to discuss about new sets, the talk can get very off topic. Whereas EB has a much stronger creative background in terms of discussions about techniques and MOCs, so when there is little to discuss about new sets, there is always something else to discuss.

The problem with Eurobricks and their moderators is that they feel like they're 'god'. I don't mind when people get scolded or (perma)banned for legit reasons and/or consistently spamming the thread(s) with fake news, stupid questions and zero contribution to the discussion, but the moderators always say things like people are little babies. Besides the fact that they rarely 'punish' the people that 'deserve' it instead of people who they think are the bad guys in terms of legit leaking.

The thing with Stash2Stixx is that it's really hypocrite when you consistently post rumors, but when others do it, they get a time-out or banned. It's really annoying. I see people here talk about the same rumors and leaked images, but people know they shouldn't post it here so the conversation slowly turns into a discussion about the leaked things without everybody posting images. I don't think that is a problem, but if you consistently say 'this is a bad thing' then it will probably get even more attention than you want.

I think you can ask people politly to stop posting leaks with watermarks and tell them they will get a warning if they do it again in the future, but with respect and on a normal tone. Not like 'STOP POSTING MF RUMORS YOU WILL GET BANNED, but yeah the MF is coming'.

I still use EB as my main source for when it comes to Lego News/discussion, but that is mainly because it seems that EB has more people who talk about it. However the last couple of months it's more and more nonsense and seemingly 12 year old kids. I also don't like the layout for this forum as it seems a little unclear for me, but I guess you should just get used to it haha.

Anyway sorry for this totally irrelevant post which every member here has probably posted sometime in his life on this forum.

If the UCS MF never comes, at least the silver lining will be this Stash2Stixx guy being wrong and hopefully catching the crap he deserves for it.  He's awful, or at least his online persona is from what I've picked up by my occasional ghost visiting of that awful forum.

the short of this discussion is that EB is sort of the courthouse for lego news. there are procedures to be followed, a grumpy Judge just trying to do what the law says, and a ton of people all wanting to talk about things that don't affect the case. while we here at Brickset are the local Pub/Bar bunch of guys and gals out having a good time talking about what ever is current in our interests. and having a grand old time doing it. both are good for what they are, fun vs. function.

Can I be the bartender?? :)

I think the thing is brickset used to be the pub at the start of the night with fun and interesting talk. Sure there was always that guy that had a head start and wasn't making any sense but for the most part people were engaging. And new people would come and join in all the time.

Now we seem to be the same pub at the end of the night, where all conversations are complete nonsense and we laugh hysterically at nothing. Where one by one people are either leaving, not saying much and just sitting in the corner or talking endlessly but saying nothing.

As someone who has a pub and has to set his own pub quiz every week and clean the toilets I am against this idea as I come here for escape, random subjective hints about a mythological UCS MF and of course explosions (the more the better).

more speculation and sausages and white rangefinders.

When you see a '100+ new posts' within 12 hours, THEN there will be ONE new rumor/news... the rest of the posts will be in the line of "Finally some news!" or "No sausages?!" (because the box will have explosions for sure) ;-)
