^^ Ouch! To think not long after I got back into Lego, a guy at Brick-a-laide tried to convince me that I should buy an extra #10179 he had for $4.5k, because they weren't going to get any cheaper & Lego would never again release an iconic set like that. Wonder if anyone took him up on the offer & if they regret doing so...

Was it ever actually that high? I though 3 grand was the limit.
  • SumoLegoSumoLego Member Posts: 15,229
There were many first editions that sold well above $3k.

@Kaitch keep in mind I'm talking Australian dollars, currently AU$4,500 is US$3,469, £2,465 or €2,808. Not a hundred percent on it, but I think there were a couple of sellers on eBay with first edition 10179 sets, with all the extras for over US$3k. I doubt his was a first edition, but it's likely I was one of a few 'just out of my dark ages' marks he probably figured he could swindle first edition level coin from for a regular sealed 10179.

That does make more sense. Silly currencies. I would ask why we can't all use the same one, but after the Eurozone crisis...
    VorpalRyuFollowsClosely
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,679
that would probably imply all countries must have the same monetary policy, which is probably extremly complicated.
  • KaitchKaitch Member Posts: 386
Exactly. When the Eurozone was set up, all participating countries were given certain rules they had to follow to synchronize the various monetary policies. But most of them, such as (for example) Greece, did not follow the rules, and did not actually meet the prerequisites. Hence, the Eurozone Crisis.

A few years ago, there was talk of all EU countries being obligated to adopt the euro. David Cameron had to go to Brussels to ask permission the retain the pound as an officially recognized currency. Cameron won that one, but he should never have HAD to ask for such a basic sovereign right. Britian was also promised that we would never be forced to bail out any Eurozone country, a promise that was forgotten as soon as the EU needed more money.

^ It would be a good time for Lego to do something wouldn't it, everyone should have there cards by now but I fear we wont seen anything special.

Am I the only one who’s been disappointed by the one month of double VIP points? It’s already 4 months into the year and that’s all we’ve gotten for “a full year of special Star Wars-themed offers throughout 2018”

My interest had been waining, then this Falcon came along and I was excited. Now I am definitely back into a dark age. My falcon is still sealed.
  • SeanTheCollectorSeanTheCollector Member Posts: 765
^ I'm still trying to decide on a suitable way of displaying it before I crack it open. I have replacement printed parts so there will be no printed stickers! :-) My ideal solution would be a glass topped coffee table. Backup solution is a tilting stand but I would still need a suitable free space somewhere. Even then I'm going need a bucket load of free time to get it done!

Although I don't regret buying it straight away, I was definitely looking forward to more than double VIP promotions. Virtually all Star Wars sets can be had with significantly better discounts at other retailers if you are patient.

Perhaps we should all threaten to return our unopened falcons if the Black Card benefits don't materalize in 2018. I'm sure that would go down well in the media! :)

I'm not too butt-hurt as I'd have been happy with just the black VIP card and the Falcon. Hell... I'd still have bought day one with no freebies, without the black card and even if it was a straight re-release of the prior one.

But to promise something and not provide it is pretty crappy. As Yoda said: "Either do or do not. Don't say you will then just offer double VIP points on a bunch of sets that can be bought elsewhere for a lot less". Or something like that.

I'm sure class action lawsuits have been brought for lesser offenses. Hopefully the number of Falcon sales just outstripped the inventory of amazing freebies and Lego is currently ramping up supply in order to blow our socks off at the end of Q2. Or maybe not. Worst case scenario will be if there were some cool promos that have now been cancelled due to demand outstripping supply.

    From LEGO Customer Service:

“Thanks for getting in touch with us.

I enjoyed reading your email, and I hope you've had a great time building the 75192 Millennium Falcon™!

I'll be sure to pass your feedback along to the Promotions Team. Due to the overwhelming response of the Falcon, we're really happy to hear that our fans are looking forward to the next promotion attached to the Falcon VIP cards!

Even though I can't disclose any details yet, we hope you'll keep an eye on your emails, because the Promotions Team likes to surprise our fans, (and us!), with the perks!

    Happy Building!

I have been pretty optimistic the rewards would improve as the year progresses. But if nothing turns up in May that is nearly half the year gone with only the weak 2x in February. A far cry from the promised 'throughout the year'.

Rumours are that black vip card holders will get a blue print poster of the new y-wing and a raffle to win that pewter r2d2
  • The_RancorThe_Rancor Member Posts: 2,573
^ The latter makes sense as they featured a pic of the 'platinum' R2D2 with the original promotional guff that came with the card. However, even if only Black VIP card members can enter, it's probably only a slightly better chance of winning than the original platinum R2D2 draw over the new year - by the way did anyone on a fan site actually win it?

There was also an image of the DJ polybag in the original 3 deals suggested on the Black VIP promo card but we've recently had DJ polybags in their droves at Tesco stores so the appeal is minimal if that's a freebie - I already bought 2. The third deal I think related to VIP points or discounts but was more vague.

i'm sure I'm just getting drawn into the marketing hype from the customer service team but the slightly generic comment of 'surprise' makes me hope the promo will at some point make available something that we haven't seen yet which is truly exclusive. A blueprint of the Y-Wing sounds nice but not "I'm going to spend (up to) full RRP for a lot of Star Wars sets" nice.

Or worse, have to go to store to buy the Y-Wing and collect the poster.  That being the case, how would they know how many VIPs will visit what store?  And what happens to the unsold excess?  Doesn’t sound very exclusive to me.

There are some very hard core collectors out there looking for the winner of the platinum R2D2, with Deep Deep pockets waiting for it to surface, or the owner to be identified. When these people spend thousands on something like the George Lucas minifigure, you can just imagine how much they would spend to get hold of this..
Maybe the winner of this unique piece has done the right thing by keeping quiet..

The smart thing is to float it out there on a forum like this and get plugged into the right places to get a bidding war started. That figure will easily be worth $50k-$100k to the right person. Maybe more since we are talking platinum.

Why anyone outside of a millionaire / billionaire would keep something like that is beyond me.

No, I get it. Because it's not just something valuable, and it's not just something you paid for. It's not even just a rare piece any collector would love. There's also the fact that YOU won it, that you're the won who had the numbers fall juuust right, that it's yours in a way buying can't quite replicate, because of all the people who entered, YOU got it. It's a kind of sentimental value you can't really replicate with a pile of cash.

I can think of $100k other things that can create sentimental value!

And on a completely unrelated thought, if someone wants to offer me $100k for my Mr. Gold, I will hand-deliver it to you.

I have a few things that are worth far more than I would ever pay for them but at the same time I would not sell them. So I kind of get it but yes I would sell this one for sure.

I would punch sentiment in the throat for 100K

If you have sentiment for a stupid r2d2 made from a precious metal that you neither created yourself or needed no skill to acquire and that sentiment means you miss out $100k plus dollars, you're not sentimental, you're dumb.

I  should also add that I think it's dumb that someone would pay that much for said bauble. But that's a different thing all together. When you are that wealthy you can afford such extravagances. It's irresponsible for pretty much everyone else.

It's easy/fun to throw out random numbers, but it's probably best to go with the limited sales history that we do have; the last gold C-3PO that sold went for approximately $40,000.
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,679
relatively speaking, it's probably more reasonable for a billionnaire to spend 100k on this than for an average joe to buy a single CMF at 4€. :-/
also the 100k can then be spent on useful things by people who really need them.

When you're paying 10-100 times the material's worth, what it's made of becomes irrelevant. If it's made of platinum or pewter, neither are worth more than £5k (assuming it.won't weigh more than 5 troy ounces, if Platinum).

Precious metal prices are screwy right now anyway, with Platinum being 10x rarer than gold, being more commercially useful than gold, but being less in favour with investors wanting to put their money in a safe place, it costs about 25% less. Before the 2007/2008 crash, platinum was markedly more expensive
than Gold and palladium was far cheaper than it is now.

According to Hothbricks something similar is indeed what we're getting: an A4 blueprint of #75181 UCS Y-Wing Starfighter.

@Bumblepants At least you don't need to buy the Y-Wing to get it:
    • For black VIP card holders: free when buying any SW set.
    • Everybody else: free when spending EUR30 or more on SW sets.

Supposedly valid both online and in store.

    Weak sauce.

So black card holders can potentially this poster free with a £13 spend (battlepack) but the hoi polloi have to drop around a massive £25 to get one? You're spoiling us Mr. Ambassador! I think I'd have preferred no exclusive offers to date as I have the horrible feeling that someone somewhere is laughing at us.

^ Nothing exclusive for black card then, we just have to potentially spend a little less to get it than someone without one? Very poor "exclusive benefit/perk".

^ what a pointless promo for black card holders when you have to send £65 to get BB8. Just like the double points not many will take up the offer and even less will vaule it.
    monkeyhangeromniumgmonkey76BumblepantsJBricks27
  • BrainsluggedBrainslugged Member Posts: 2,250
^ I was about to say the same thing. How many black VIP card holders will be visiting a Lego store on May 4th and spend LESS than €30 anyway? I'd say absolutely zero. Thus adding another layer of pointlessness/insult to this "exclusive" offer

Again, I'd have been happy with zero offers when I bought the Falcon and wasn't expecting anything too amazing, but these offers are starting to take the p!ss.
