Ikea suggestions?

MattDawsonMattDawson Member Posts: 1,468
I'm visiting an Ikea tomorrow to pick up my second table for building/displaying stuff in my bedroom - are there any suggestions about other items from Ikea which may be useful? Storage boxes, racks, etc.?

I use the kasseby display boxes. They look good and can accommodate big figs and smaller sets. You can get around 50 minifigures in. £12

    also - get the breakfast!

dont forget to sign up to ikea family as you'll get a free gift (usually a doughnut) on the way out!

Ikea on a Sunday? Best of luck... Their Ivar range of shelving has proved excellent in my Lego room - versatile, well built and cost effective. As for a table, they do a good range of tops and legs which you can mix and match in the office furniture section.

I use kallax - cheap, easy to build and double as a room divider that lets light through.

I use trofast to store all my Lego. Easy accessible pull out trays. Apologies for late post.

Do they still let you in half an hour early for "browsing" on Sundays? Made it pretty painless the last time I went there, not least in terms of finding a parking space. Was in and out really quickly as I knew what I was after!

It was actually very good - we got to the warehouse not long after 11 (when the tills open) and blitzed through it. It seems Mother's Day is the ideal time to visit Ikea!

Birmingham (Wednesbury) is open on 10AM for browsing, and for purchases from 11.

I don't know. I always find a way to get there midweek (perks of working from home :-) )

I'll second the Trofast.  I bought 4 of them about 6 months back and built a DIY Lego table with tons of built in storage pictured here:

You have to buy the storage bins separately but they are pretty cheap.  I think all said and done it was about $270 for all of it.  I'd recommend getting a 1 piece table top.  I cheaped out and bought 2 cheap pieces and it's caused a couple of small problems.  You can see in the picture they don't line up exactly, and I had to do some messing around getting them level.

Sorry I'm late with this, but if you're still in the market I'd recommend this to you or anyone else wanting lego storage or a DIY table.  For a bedroom you might just want 1 or 2 against a wall.

I since had to move this operation to the basement as it took up the kids' entire playroom.

Love it! Would like to do something similar myself but space is limited at the moment. This is what mine looks like at the moment.

Has anyone got experience with Algot wall-mounted rail/rack shelving? I'm looking into this for train storage on my chimney breast....

I use Algot as well as Trofast. Shelves are good for display, and baskets handy for storage. I bag up sets in the Ikea fridge/freezer bags then store in the baskets.

@Wicksy80 Do you find dust getting into the trays much of a problem with Trofast?
  • Wicksy80Wicksy80 Member Posts: 596
@catwrangler It's not too bad. I find it collects in the bottom, round the edges. You can get lids for the trays

I've seen several people use the IVAR shelves for storage, but how are they for display?  Wall mounted shelves won't work well in the new lego space and I'm exploring options for displaying my collection. Primary focus is something that can hold modulars.

@Astrobricks I saw that the other day. While nice, they are a bit above my budget right now.

@BuriedinBricks I recently sold my Expedit shelves and replaced them with this Vittsjo setup.  Works great for the modulars with just enough space in front for some vehicles.

Obviously from the photo you can tell that this isn't exclusively for LEGO, so I had to find something that would work well and keep the lady happy...

Do you know if these shelves can fit the Town Hall modular?

No it wont.  There is just over 15" of clearance between shelves.  The GBHQ barely fits (I had to take off a roof access that I built) and the Grand Emporium sign had to be shortened by a couple studs.

If you like the style, IKEA also recently launched the Fjallbo which has a similar look but with wood shelves.  They are one shelf shorter and so you could put your modulars on the top.  This would be similar to where my setup is located in the first picture.

That was me. They were a little bit more then I wanted to spend right now also, But I figured buy once cry once. Also two of them just happened to fit in the area I had after moving some stuff around.
