As for the most desirable...I think we all have different priorities. For me, it's the Veterinarian (not vegetarian...well, maybe) because it's a healthcare professional; the Baker because of the whisk; the Hot Dog Vendor Guy because of the tray and drink; Rocket Boy because of the costume; and the Ray Gun Man, because it's just cool.
Picked out 12, got 4 Elf Maiden, 3 Rocket Boy, Vet, Highwayman, Hot Dog Vendor, Retro Spaceman, Connoisseur. meant to get Chef instead of Retro Spaceman but very good for a series I'm not used to feeling.
The hollow on the back of the baguette piece is how I spotted the Frenchie. It was hard to tell apart the Corn Guy and Rocket Boy costume pieces. The rocket has a protruding knob where the corncob is just rounded.
got a lot of buns from the #30399 polybag
You need to feel feel for the round nobble at the top of the rocket boy's rocket.
I have a spare Retro spaceman (pack opened to see what's inside. I mistook the helmet for the vet's rabbit. Would swap for something else if you want.
Good man!..i have a post on Marketplace..take a look and see if there is something you want...
I'm gonna leave this alone as I don't want to be put in a time out. I can't be the only one who thought that was more than a little dirty?
This, and the Corn Guy has a texture to him that the Rocket Boy doesn't. I personally still have problems with the Vet, but I think I'm gonna give up on getting more spares.
Now, I need to get a frame to display them, but that's for another thread.
Some of the figures in the past are awkward to display, due to the space they require.
Nobble. That's now my new favorite word. Nobble.
No luck tracking down a Vet yet, with today's purchases I got Surfer, Fitness Lady, Sci-Fi Dude and two Bakers. (I thought one was Butterfly Girl because of her flower stem accessory.)
Got 8 figures now and one of the dupes I wanted, next week I'll have more time and more cash to do a proper purchase search.
There is a Barns and Nobole right next to a Toys'r us and both had CMF 17 so I lucked out.
The Toys'r us also had what looked like a full case of the Disney and series 16 CMFs but I didn't get any from either of those.
Lucky, I'm missing complete sets of Series 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Team GB and that Soccer series... I'm afraid my feel-fu skills did not become adequate enough to get full sets until Series 8.
I wonder if they intend to make a new Character Encyclopedia with Series 20? I would have thought they'd have more than enough new series now to do another Updated and Expanded edition, this time with perhaps some new exclusive figure like a Zombie Cowgirl... That'd actually be pretty neat come to think of it.
4 - 8 came out a time when my money was tight, and chances to get at boxes were slim. The fact that they came out so close together too, didn't help either. Series 6 is going to be the hard one, since I still need 7, including the Roman Soldier. Never bothered with the Olympic set, and not interested in the German footballers.
Sometimes I can be too completionist for my own good. I had tight funds during Series 2 and Series 4 came and went so fast I never really saw it around that long. I have no idea why.
Series 3 I'm only missing 3, go figure. Series 1 and 2 varies, I need 14 from Series 2 because I got two of them through secondary sellers at a local convention a few years ago.
Need 11 from Series 4, 6 from Series 5, 4 from Series 6 and 4 from Series 7, the real kicker is I'm missing Bunny Suit Guy and Lizard Suit Guy which from what I understand are two of the more expensive figures I'm missing.
I no longer use E-Bay, and I'm not in a rush to get everything I need. But I wouldn't say no if I stumbled across someone selling theirs or trading some spares for a reasonable offer. That Jungle Boy was annoying, I actually got three of him, kept two because I don't sell duplicates unless I feel a need to and mailed the third off to a friend of mine.
I've been contemplating opening an online store to sell off stuff and also sell MISB sets, but haven't gotten much information put together yet to give it a try or not. It's a risky business venture with so many resellers and the like. Debating on if I should pick up a load of Series 17 to sit on until later, might be useful for future trades.
Anyway, I forgot to mention I need 10 from Series 1, fortunately not the Nurse though, I picked up two of her to be sure I'd have everything I wanted of her, and I understand she's pretty pricey these days.
Zombie was a rare in Series 1 (3 per box)
Fairly sure this is accurate:
Cob's head would look good on a Series 3 Race Driver for a Nigel Mansell minifig.
Yet here I go again army building, this time with Elf Girl. I customize with some regular parts and sell the special ones; Elf Girl seems better for that than S16 Rogue, which should help cut down on cost.
Target had another case's worth of loose bags out, but mixed with the leftovers from the last 2, so I had to search them all again. got the 3 rocket boy and elf girl, and finally found Chef. got packet weights on ones I missed the last time.
Here's my updated identification guide
5 per box
Highwayman [16, 10.8g]: Three-corner hat and two pistols
Corn Cob Guy [4, 12.4g]: large corn mold, bumps for kernels
Circus Strongman [2, 10.3g]: The new round barbell piece is the only thing to look for
4 per box
Connoisseur (Frenchman) [9, 11.7g]: baguette (especially hollow back), bulldog, and small flattish hat
Roman Gladiator [8, 10.2g]: The trident is all that stands out
Yuppie [12, 10.5g]: mobile phone has pretty distinct design, also 1x1 tile and tiny slope
Retro Spaceman [11, 10.5g]: the new ray gun and helmet
Hot Dog Vendor [6, 11.55g]: tray that's different from stand.
Battle Dwarf [10, 10.6g]: The hammer should be enough, but also the mohawk
3 per box
Professional Surfer [1, 11.1g]: The surfboard
Gourmet Chef [3, 11.1g]: several but I found mine via the whisk
Elf Girl [15, 11.7g]: large dress piece very easy to find
Veterinarian [5, 10.9g]: rabbit
Butterfly Girl [7, 11.5g]: Large wings stand out very easily.
Dance Instructor [14, 11.8g]: Large curly hair piece, also a 1×1 round brick
Rocket Boy [13, 13.5g]: rocket costume
Rocket Boy is the only figure significantly above MSRP on BrickLink right now. Most are slightly above or below.
Corn Guy and Rocket Boy costumes could get confused. The rocket has a protruding knob where the corncob is just rounded.
Butterfly Girl and Elf Maiden packets should be thick
Vet and Space Guy could get confused because of similar hair
Highwayman bandana, Strongman mustache and Dwarf beard could get confused
Dwarf, Butterfly and Rocket all have short legs

@madforlego thanks for quoting me in response to @astrobricks. I got the rarity info from https://brickset.com/article/27419/series-17-cmf-box-distribution, which you snipped from the quote
I got lucky and found a Rocket Boy at Wal-Mart... Did not get any Vets yet though, my feel-fu has failed me, what I thought was a rabbit piece turned out to be something from the Roman Gladiator, his hair and trident combined or something, I have no idea how it happened either. Could have sworn I felt the rabbit.
Only need a few more to complete the set, plus some duplicates for things like the Vet, the Vendor and maybe a second Butterfly Girl for her wings. I love the Finn hair in brown though so at least two Gladiator's wasn't a total bummer.
Pretty ironic considering he's a common, and easy to find.
