Throwing out all of my boxes and instructions from my childhood when I entered my dark ages....
OR
Deciding to come back later to pick up the three UCS Falcons that were being cleared at 50% off....
OR
Loading up on six Tower Bridges @3for2 instead of 18 Imperial Flagships....
Off to have a quiet drink now.

Anyone have a horror story involving LEGO stuff? Idk, disappearing bricks suddenly reappearing in unlikely places, or maybe you dreamt you got eaten by a LEGO Smaug?

Not a horror story but more of a regret and that is getting rid to a charity shop my Harry Potter lego and having thoughts that they sold it too cheap or just dumped it in a box so bits got muddled up or missing.

I was building the detective office on a little table. The table fell over causing the pieces on the table to fly all over the floor, and what I have built so far fell apart when it hit the floor. I somehow managed to find all of the pieces on the floor.

Definitely have lost some rare pieces. That is frustrating.

Allowing my brother to have all my childhood Lego (70s & 80s stuff) because he had kids and I didn't want it. Now I'm out of my dark ages and it's still in a box in his loft because his kids have too much Lego (and because he doesn't want to mix it with their modern Lego). I think it's time for it to be returned <cue manic laughter> :)

Storing my childhood LEGO at my mom's for years. She had cats and I am highly allergic. She passed away seven years ago and there's still one final box I haven't opened. There's not enough Benadryl in the world to save from the flurry of sneezes and watery eyes that will surely occur.

That final box contains mostly Space and Castle sets from the 1980s.

Not my nightmare, but maybe others...

I have two of the 1x8 brick in Maersk Blue (http://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=3008#T=S&C=72&O={"color":72})

It doesn't appear in any set. It's rare as anything (you can't buy it in the UK on Bricklink). I managed to get two of them a couple of years back.

I got wording printed onto one of them, to use as a 'lego show' brick ;)

Just recently I picked up the car from Monster Fighters set #9466 along with a bit of a Batman set, all for £2 in a charity shop. Came home and decided to clean all the bits up on a tray then build in front of the PC in my study/LEGO room with the instructions on the screen. Went to stand up and managed to catch the tray flicking loads of pieces down the back of the desk! Luckily I was able to fish it all out and the set turned out to be complete.

A few years ago I bought one of the Jedi Starfighters sets, built it upstairs. Was going to watch one of the Star Wars films so thought it would be fun to have it on the sofa to muck about with......dropped it from the top of the stairs while fumbling with my phone. The R2 head was missing for sometime until a spring clean when it was found in the dust under the sofa.

And the one from my pre dark ages. I was probably about 4 or 5 at the time, Classic Space was the big theme in our collection and my brother and I were playing. For some reason I wanted a minifigure to be drowning in a "space swamp" as you do and pulled one apart piece by piece so we could sink him into the carpet until just a hand was left showing. I thought it would be hilarious to pretend I had a whole figure stuck up my nose after that, by dangling the hand from one nostril.....I breathed in at the wrong moment. There are 20 minutes of tweezer digging stress that I'm not getting back again!

Other than my wife finding out how much I spend on Lego the closest to a horror story was few years ago.

between 2011 and 2013 I spent a large amount of time building a very large MOC of Hogwarts Castle (pictures are in a really old thread up here somewhere), anyway, this was a big model, full castle, Hogsmeed Village, Station, Dark woods, taking up around 12 square feet of space, basically the full magical bananas. Then in 2014 for one of my wife's birthdays (cant say which :) ) we had a bit of a house party, including kids...

Needless to say by the time I reached the attic room where the model was housed the damage was done, 2 years of building work destroyed by an army of four year olds in minutes. I was not happy and the faked outrage from the parents of the little terrors didn't really help, it's just a kids toy after all, in fact a few of them chastised me for being cross.
@monkey_roo, is this the MOC?

I remember being super impressed with that, it is a lot of work there. Sorry to hear it was destroyed.

@eggshen yes that's the one. By the the time I got to the room the only recognisable part of the castle left was the owlrey tower.

After that I didn't have the will power to rebuild at that scale so about a year later I build a system scale version that fits on a shelf, the owlrey tower still survives to this day though.

thanks for digging out that old link, haven't looked at those pictures for a while, always liked the AT-AT patrolling the grounds :)

This is a long story, so brace yourself.

Anyways, for a couple of the LEGO sets that I really like (modulars, some battle scenes from movies), I put them on this IKEA shelf, which just mounts on the wall by a hook. It was something I really prized a lot, as most of my LEGO friends did not have a "display shelf." I built a lot of my Mocs, a mini city, and a LEGO store style display of sets. It even had LED lights on it, making it especially special for me. It's in my LEGO room, kind of like a man cave, so I hang out with my friends there. It was during the Super Bowl a few years back that we had a party, and we we're playing mini football, and then someone bumped into my shelf, released the hook, and the whole thing just fell. All the LEGO's broke, and it took forever for me to rebuild everything again.
I could even remember someone blaintly "INTERCEPTION!!"

Now that I think about it, it isn't that long of a story. So the moral of the story is never play around near your precious LEGOs or else...

Not much of a "horror" but an "oh [email protected]!" moment: vacuuming the carpet and hearing that dreadful "clink" sound as a fallen LEGO piece is sucked into the allergy-inducing bag.

I'm sure many can related to this.

I alluded to this in my previous post: "The hoover. The Hoover! The HOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEER!!!!!!!!" In the UK a vacuum cleaner is called a hoover (sometimes). I am aware there is also a dam in the USA, but funnily enough I wasn't referring to that. I (now) appreciate this may not be obvious though! :-)

Sorry about that @MaffyD, now I get it... Hoover :-) A vacuum was nowhere near my thoughts when I read that; kept me wondering what that was about.

Back home, people called all razors "Gillete" regardless of the brand.

As a foriegner in the UK many differences in words such as these lead me to believe that my boyfriend and I talk about our languages more than any topic (we both speak only English!). It's usually him saying something like, "I don't know what you're referring to. I mean (insert word here)." Then I look at him blankly for a minute before saying, "Oh, I say (insert word here)". Then we discuss it endlessly only for EVERY SINGLE CONVERSATION, no matter how well reasoned to end with "Well I speak the Queen's English. We're in the land of English" only for me to remind him that he's Scottish and we live in Scotland so technically speaking we're not in the land of English!

On the other side of the pond, the brand-name-does-not-equal-product that gets to the bf is Band-aid, which I am guilty of using instead of plaster. And Kleenex instead of tissue (tho I don't actually use that one).

Back on topic.... um... I have no horror stories! Lego has been a constant in my life so even tho I have bought and sold my collection several times over, given it to charity, left it with my ex, when I had it it was great so #noregrets

(Unless you count that time I went to Billund and had to fold the Palace Cinema box in half to get it home. That was painful).

Other than my Galaxy Commander and Blactron Renegade being either given away or thrown out by my mother, it's the City Service Station I received today from Amazon. No shipping box, labels all over it, partially crushed, and a 2-inch hole punched into one side.

Merry Christmas to you too, Amazon.

Trying to rebuild a half built ewok village. The set was brand new when I first eyeballed it at a friends house, I immediately said that if he ever wanted to move it on to call me (I work fast, Lego is a serious matter)..... Months pass, nearly a year in fact. He finally relinquishes but there is a catch, he and his friends (young 20 somethings) "got mashed", took it to another persons house and "tried" to build it..... It is now in my possession, ripped manual with missing pages, lots of missing parts, 4 figures have gone awry, box is damaged, the little brown tub is oval shaped, a brown slope has a bent corner and I found a half arch piece snapped in two. There were even some non Lego items in amongst it all including some cigarette butts.... The build is on hold until he goes on a jolly good hunt for all the lost items, sober.

Honestly, it's doesn't matter if it's viewed as "just a kid's toy" or not. They shouldn't let their kids run around and messing with stuff that isn't theirs. Kids are kids. The parents should know better.

As for me, I don't really have a horror story per se, aside from a couple instances of wrong sticker placing. If that even counts. The other might be my missing collection of old Lego from childhood. It was never sold or thrown out. I still have no idea where they are.

Maybe not "horror", but close enough: Finding a 1x1 plate in the floor next to my 40+ sets display... a light grey plate where 50% of the sets are Star Wars sets. *places plate in a corner on the dislay to hopefully figure out where it belongs some day*

Seriously not me, but a friend wanted to move the Ferris Wheel from his apartment to his parents' house for storage and it slipped from it hands on the way to the car... And he lives in the city centre, so parts were going in all directions. He had to go back to find a bag large enough to fit the parts that were still together. And hopefully he found all parts on the street. We did not have the willpower yet to rebuild it, it is now in such a stage that you might be able to put it together ok-ish, if all the parts are there, but the damage is extensive enough it would probably have to be built again from scratch.

^ He carried it OPENLY, WITHOUT A BOX?! Last time I moved I got nervous about set boxes that just had 'normal' bags inside them with the Lego inside them - I always think one brick will slip out... It's ziplock bags or nothing, these days.

Afraid so yes, he usually moves his builds to his parents for storage, as his apartment is not that big...

I already get scared when I move a built set from the living room to the attic so I was more horrified than him, and I only heard the story afterwards, I wasn't even there!

This happened a little over a year ago but we had some friends over and they brought their 13 yo. Well he is autistic and while we were chatting at the dinner table he was enjoying my winter village set up, just in the next room, the living room. We could hear noises coming from there but just sounded like he was playing with the train and stuff. My wife started to get a little concerned with the level of noise and decided to see what he was up to. Well it turned out he had basically dismantled about 75% of the sets on the table, at least to some extent.

Nothing completely taken apart but enough that I would have to finish disassembling the majority so I could make sure I had all the parts and rebuild. There were a couple sets that I was able to just quickly put back together but for the most part the rest had to be rebuilt.

It didn't really upset me since to me most of the fun is in the building. His mother was pretty horrified though and kept apologizing.

I still have a baggie of parts I need to figure out where they go, but I think they are mostly things like snowmen and bits like that.
