Just finished building the #10264 Corner Garage that was on back order since Black Friday and was delivered Friday. Came across a part I didn't know was one of the printed pieces that had been redesigned. New Elementary had an article about these a month ago.
Bricklink has it as part of the new Ecto-1 inventory but the pictures in the Brothers Brick review of the set show the old clock design.

I think Lego is selling stock they don't have yet. All the big and sought after sets are all in stock and that never happens. My Cantina has been processing for a few days now. It goes from processing to in warehouse in a few minutes usually. I reckon they're seeing how many they need and then shipping them.
Apparently there are queues for unloading and processing through customs all over the world, affecting many industries. 2020 continues to throw up surprises.

And transportation of vaccines is about to impact shipping to some degree. I’d expect some delays from UPS and fedex in the US.

^ I don't think vaccine transport is going to have any impact.  Amazon is processing millions of packages daily, as is USPS, UPS and FedEx.  The bigger delay is the crush of people sending last-minute Christmas Gifts.

LEGO's production and stock levels are known months in advance, and how they manage their inventory is automated.

Also, supposedly, their sales are up 37% for 2020, despite their efforts to defer the revenue until after the pandemic passes.  In certain employment groups, there was a 2x paycheck bonus paid out recently.

With yesterday's purchase of #75980 and some HP2 CMFs, I have 5002 minifigures. 😃 Actually more because I only count one of each CMF; duplicates sometimes are given away, so I don't count them.

^I was going buy something special when I hit a milestone of # of sets recently, but I’ve been waiting for anything to come in stock and then I passed the milestone anyway when I found a box of minifig packs I got off S@H a couple years ago. Wah wuh.

Closure on missing out in my childhood with Barracuda Bay arriving today.

Shame it has to go straight to my storage unit since I don't have room in the studio... :(

I'm sure there are more than enough police minifigures in your collection to figure out what happened to the missing mini figs.

I got one of those on Flickr before the first series. I think they just get researchers to contact lego builders to apply for auditions. Not saying you couldn't get on it!

#75291 Death Star Final Duel finally came back in stock a few days ago, so an order went in for that immediately and I used up some VIP points to get it for about half-price, which was nice.
What's even nicer is that my other half agreed to buy it for me as a Christmas gift! :-)
It somewhat makes up for the last time she bought me some Lego for Christmas and, although I'd *always* told her to ask me before getting anything Lego-related, she presented me with #75177 First Order Heavy Scout Walker. I could have cried. And not for joy... ;-)

My order is still 'processing'. Getting a bit worried. Also waiting for my Bugatti to come in so the Christmas worry is real. I don't know why I'm worrying about them. If I get them right now they'll sit for months while I build the other sets I have yet to touch.

My status today is waiting for a package from @SumoLego that was shipped on the 7th and has been sitting at a USPS regional distribution center in my metro area since the 13th. Come on USPS!!

I also need to finish wrapping all presents today so I can clear off the desk that will be needed to build the UCS MF. I have two weeks off, so it’s a good time to finally dive in. I will aim for 2 sets of bags per day so I have a couple days at the end to break down my winter village—the worst Lego task of all time.

I can relate.  I ordered some color changing Lightbulbs that were supposed to be for my outdoor holiday lighting.  Took over a week for the vendor to actually ship them and now they've been bouncing around from FedEx depot to FedEx depot in CO for since December 10th.  FedEx website currently claims they will be delivered today but I'm not holding my breath. The kicker is I got a request from the vendor today to rate my purchase which I've yet to receive.  Glad I didn't order a Christmas tree from them.

Yikes! I’m glad the set Sumo sent isn’t a gift for someone or I would be much more annoyed. Also not a set I was going to build right away. Seasonal decorations would be just as frustrating. Sorry!

I know we love the products but Lego really is a horrible company.
I was wondering about my Cantina so I looked around the internet for some local reviews of the site and I found this.

I will start by saying that I put one star as I had no option to put 0 stars.
On the 8th of December I have ordered the Lego Mos Eisley cantina for Christmas for my 10 years old son. I had been checking the lego website everyday during November and December so that I could get one for Christmas, as soon as it became available I purchased one. We usually don't buy such expensive sets but as we have been directly impacted by the fires last year and lost a lot we decided to make this Christmas extra special for our son. On the 17th of December I became a little concerned as the order still showed to be in process. I called and they told me the reason they were not shipping it was because the free gifts weren't available. I explained that I did not care about the free gifts so they lady cancelled the order and make me repurchase cancelling the free gifts. I explained how important was to me to get this gift in time for my son because of what we have been through, I made very clear that I wasn't explaining the situation for them to feel sorry for me only so they understood that I needed by Christmas. She said no problems added express post and guaranteed it would be shipped very soon and also send a little poly bag to apologies for the inconvenience and bad service. The day after, Friday the 18th I called twice asking why the order still showed as in progress both guys guaranteed me that I would receive the parcel by Christmas and that I had nothing to worry about. I am sure they can check I am telling the truth as the calls were recorded, so they can listen to what I was told. So today is Monday and the parcel still showed in progress, after calling twice the lady on the phone told me that they had none in stock and that I was not going to receive one for Christmas. Every time I called I explained the situation and asked them to tell me if they were not going to get it to me in time so I could buy something special. They lied to me every time. Moral of the tory is that I find them to be the most unethical, incompetent, out of touch company and I will not ever again buy anything from them again. Now as I live in the middle of the bush I need to try and find something special for Friday which is close to impossible as our shops don't have as much variety and I will not get it in time in the mail. Disappointed doesn't explain how I feel.

I can wait a few weeks/months for this set. Yeah I ordered one the same day they did as a Christmas present for myself and it looks like it's not coming but it's cases like this that make me see red. Mine still says In Process so if they don't have any where is the communication? If they never had it in stock why not tell people so they can make other arrangements/gifts? If they never had it why are they even selling it?
I have a friend buying some sets for her son. Ordered them before I put my order in and her order is still processing.
The pathetic thing is Lego said order by the 13th for delivery for Christmas. Well we did and it looks like us and alot of other people will be not be receiving our orders. Why have a deadline in the first place?
I'm going to write a hand written letter to their head office. Nothing will come of it but at least I'll get it off my chest.
Then when Lego does their little PR bullshit like sending a set to a child that wrote them a letter remember incidents like this.
It's going to make me feel sick when I order the new modular and Star Wars sets next week.
    Rant over.

Did LEGO lie? or did a global pandemic causing supply chain and shipping issues around the world cause problems beyond their control?

Yeah they did. They were selling something they never had in stock. There has been no communication and in the post I posted lied repeatedly to someone who bought something Lego claimed they had but didn't.

I should add that for me it's been a long time of horrible service from the Australian S@H. Even before covid they have had issues with getting new stock in. It would take months sometimes for sets to be back in stock and then 5 minutes later out of stock for another couple of months.
The Cantina was out of stock since it was released here. Then it came back in stock on the 8th there would have been alot of people ordering something they never had in stock. The worrying thing is it was showing as in stock up until a few days ago. I wonder how many others have been caught up in this. I have had no communication from Lego. You'd think that an automatic sorry we don't have this item in stock email would have come by now but it hasn't. It's been 2 weeks and not a word. Why should people chase them up for their screw up and if they do, get lied to and fobbed off only for the company to finally say we never had it in stock in the first place.
3 days before Christmas and they haven't bothered to tell people what they ordered was never in stock is unacceptable in my book.

Whenever I read these stories, I'm always skeptical - in how things were handled, and how the story is told.

Maybe I'm a complete pessimist but it really doesn't matter to me why someone orders a product - it matters if the company providing the service or product makes a guarantee and then fails.

I went to buy an end table in October.  The furniture store was happy to take my order, and then let me know it'll ship in MARCH 2021.  I can certainly then make an informed choice.

With the Cantina example - I think you have a legitimate complaint presuming they guaranteed delivery by Christmas.  Sure - maybe there are delays outside of the control of LEGO, but until it ships from their warehouse, it's LEGO's responsibility.  Under-promise, over-deliver!

With the way things are, no one should be guaranteeing delivery by a certain date- and no one should be relying on any such guarantee. But then, common sense... isn't.

The communication with the customer is broken. We all know LEGO is experiencing all kinds of issues, but there needs to be transparent communication about realistic shipping/in stock dates. Showing “In Progress” for a month doesn’t cut it. Also, don’t sell it if it isn’t sitting in your warehouse.

I don't have an issue ordering an item listed as back-ordered but they definitely should clearly state that.  Placing an order that was indicated as an in stock item then having it sitting in processing for more than a day or two is definitely unacceptable.  I've repeatedly received notifications that items have shipped when they are sitting awaiting pick-up by the shippers for several days.  LEGO has definitely been guilty of this on numerous occasions.  I know that if I receive a shipping notification on Friday, Saturday or Sunday that I'll be lucky if it actually leaves the warehouse by the following Tuesday.

Owners of supply chains need to communicate clearly what is happening in their supply chains with their customers.

Absolutely. But not selling something until you physically have it in its final completed state yourself is not how it's generally done.

Alternatively, it may have been in LEGO's warehouses... in a different continent, that they've then had trouble shipping around the world as planned when they sold it.

However, as you say, customers should be kept informed.
