This was appearing at the top of the page yesterday. There was also a slightly different version of the box later on that was red and had a "if you dismiss this you agree to this new rule" thing, but I didn't get a screencap of that (soz).
Either way, s' a daft rule that feels waaaaay too much like an overreaction.
I'm probably in the minority here as I know lots of people like the memes, gifs, videos etc but just wanted to say I personally am generally in favour of the "ban", if such a thing is now in force. Mostly I found them a bit annoying. Not necessarily because of the content but because once one person posts a meme or whatever, things tends to spiral out of control and then the original (Lego-related) topic of discussion can get lost.
Like I say, I may be in the minority here and I really don't want to get into an argument as I accept that we all find different things amusing/annoying, "live and let live" and all that, but just presenting a counter view.
I'm with you on this, a meme on its own is fine but unfortunately there does seem to be a bit of a culture of taking things too far which makes it annoying when there are 20 new posts on a thread, one relevant, one meme/joke reply then 18 replies essentially repeating the meme/joke
My LEGO Status: Will be back to work on my #31050 MOC; still deciding if I should make it smaller or not. It's definitely an advantage to do 'corner' buildings, but that would mean we would have truly square squares.
And I believe I am partially responsible, as I posted a 'Sabotage' video link from YouTube that has since been removed. If that created some issue with the ISP or with Vanilla Forums, I completely understand.
(Ironic!)
My status is fumbling through my storage stash seeking an Assault on Hoth I know I still have, but can't find. Also contemplating starting a 'Lego Anonymous' Thread for those similarly situated.
Maybe you think it's there because you think you purchased it but you didn't?
Either way, thread names/topics are there to ensure that there is a focus on a certain topic, but if you get too strict, what are you gonna do when a post contains something related to two topics? Or three? Remember, who watches the Watchmen...
It's a fair point but there's definitely a difference between discussion on a thread veering off topic and being the tenth person to make a "Red <random-thing> standing by" type comment in a row.
Either way the problem is not he posting of a meme or a joke but the continuation of such jokes to pointless lengths.
I also think a lot of this is moot - I suspect the announcement thing that triggered this was more likely a generic Vanilla Forums thing that was clicked on by accident than an official announcement- I'd imagine if it was meant as a full announcement it'd have been added to the code of conduct- http://bricksetforum.com/discussion/34/forum-rules-and-code-of-conduct-v1-3-april-2012#latest
With CMF or regular polys, there's usually a seam down the back I can cut along, but this bag is heat sealed at the top. Hmmm... I think I'm going to have to cut along the seal at the top.
Any ideas??
They may have a place on Facebook but we can do without them here.
Thank you all for your understanding.
@shib, thanks for the reminder, the rules have been updated.
(I mean no disrespect by that comment.)
(I consider myself a large child.)
(Even if my son told me I'm not a child because I'm farther from the ground than he is.)
(He's light years smarter than I am.)
And missing the memes already.
Can we still talk about sausages?
(And the Arkenstone!)
Edit: Never mind, I found them
Do read the forum in between though and very shocked about this ban on gifs and memes and whatever. Didn't post yesterday because I've been always told not to say anything when you are upset, so I slept on it.
I really don't think the memes (etc) are that rampant of a problem. Yes, threads go off topic, yes there are inside jokes newbies might not get, but when I was a newbie the inside jokes were one of the things that pulled me in. I asked 'what you on about' or did a search and got to read up on a different thread.
Okay the falcon thread went off the rails but one of the main diversions was saying the forum was broken.
Also, don't understand why there are now 'likes' on comments on the main site but a meme hasn't got a place? I still think a picture says more than a thousand words... Plus a lot of the funny video clips (that don't get posted that often anyway) have introduced me to new music (@pitfall69) or stand-up comedy (@sumolego). But most of them have got to do with the hobby anyway (like the brilliant construct-a-zurg one above definitely has a link to the hobby too).
I personally think there is nothing wrong with this forum, a nice loving community where we can joke and banter. I understand this is your baby @Huw but I do feel sad a censorship has been placed whitout any discussion and totally out of the blue. I'm not very good at confrontation and massive I should stay out of it, but I think some of the most funny and active members might feel personnaly offended and that makes me sad.
I love brickset, the comprehensive database and the good quality reviews and pictures, but I also love the forum where I've met lovely people and it's the first thing I look at when I turn my airplane mode off in the morning and I don't feel like it needs to change at all.
Like myself, came here for the Lego, stayed for the friendship. :)
Meme followed by meme followed by another can get tedious but it's rare that happens. The jokes and general fun attitude of the members is what keeps my interest alive.
LEGO have a lot to thank Brickset for in my opinion. Without Brickset and its members I suspect I would have lost interest a long time ago.
Does @Huw want to put an end to fun, friendship and banter? Nope - he just wants to stop the posting of memes, etc. Or have I got this wrong?
Absolutely.Spot.On.
That being said we also need to remember that server space isn't free, and not too long ago @Huw had to figure out a way to generate the revenue to keep our favorite forum alive. I would prefer a meme ban over a forum fee.
Sure. But that's what every other LEGO forum is for. Without fun, this forum doesn't have much going for it...
No, but it becomes very generic. Instead of Star Wars, you just get a Classic bucket.
IMO the site is fine with or without the memes (I couldn't care less), but I can understand why the worst offenders might be upset with the sudden rule change.
As is your opinion that that's a matter of opinion... Wait...
Would a transitional period really make any difference?
At the end of the day, it's Huw's site, Huw's rules. I think it's sad that some people seem to think that the memes etc are the only unique thing about this site.
Oops. Lego. Have to stay on topic
Lego...
Yeah, it is HUW's forum and his rules, but you are only saying that because you apparently agree with him :)
Edit:- It's you that's caused this anyway. You and @SumoLego . You should both be ashamed.
That's that then.
Right - I've just about finished fondling my way through the box of S17s I bought the other week. Should have the rest done this evening and then I can finally open a set for display down in the man-cave :-)
As long as the same people interact with the same diversity of humour that gives this site its character and makes it such a relaxing/fun place to come to, I will still frequent the 'Brickset Arms' and settle down with a pint for the inevitable 'difference of opinions' to crop up that I can add my 2 cents to.
I understand that a trolling or offensive post should be removed and if there was someone just only posting memes that would be a problem. Was just surprised at this ruling and wanted to express my opinion.
I'll abide by the rules off course and I'm sure we will see some fun memes in off-topic discussions :)
On topic: making room in the living room display-area by moving modulars to our billies in the bedroom, very lucky that I've got an understanding husband :)
Have a break...have a kit kat....
Memes and silliness are as part of our community as other aspects. I lost my great uncle yesterday, sometimes we need memes and silliness.
I can't articulate what I want to say really. I'm logging off.
(It isn't exactly Abbey Road Cross walk, is it now! or Antartica for that matter)
It's a meme, without being a meme. ;-) Or isn't it?!
Anyway, I am currently having a lot of fun in France taking photo's with my phone of my minifigures in the wild. It turned into a full blown minifig safari. I have taken quite a few pics, though usually it is only my Stormtrooper who goes for a 'walkabout'. I might have to dub him Mike Dundee. He is such a bushwacka and a total showoff.....
Btw.
I have not been around much here lately but that is because everything is always different in France. And when you are in France everything moves at a different pace, and so do I. Yada yada yada, bladibladibla...
Then again, I haven't looked in the UCS Falcon thread that apparently birthed this rule so I dunno the exact reasons why it's now a thing.
